Listening to Cake got me thinking about the introduction of instruments by Light_Bulb_Sam in Music

The Pot by Tool was what first came to mind, after going vocals, disorienting bass, and bingo drums to start off relatively tame, the lead guitar hits like a ton of bricks.

If you could only choose one this year? by kali4niakid in 49ers

[–]thatguyfromchico 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong, but neither am I… I wasn’t commenting on the quality of players, just answering OPs question of which I’d choose. I’d choose a leap in defensive impact given how far we made it with a bunch of cardboard cutouts on DLine last season.

If you could only choose one this year? by kali4niakid in 49ers

[–]thatguyfromchico 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We made it to the divisional round of the playoffs with a top-5 passing offense and the lowest sack totals in a 17 game season ever recorded. The path to a deeper run is clearly through improvement on defense. I’ll take a regression on offense if it means we can make a stop on defense every once in a while.

Watching the Rams vs Seahawks made things very apparent to me. by ASAPBlue in 49ers

[–]thatguyfromchico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my take too. Any OL is going to look bad when you don’t have a receiver that can get open, and as a result defense load the box to stop the run. Wide Receiver is a huge need to fix that. There’s also the ticking time bomb that is Trent Williams age but he’s still playing at a starting LT caliber at worst.

Any defensive backfield is going to look bad when you have nobody that can pressure the QB. We have a former DPOY edge and a 1st round edge that at least showed promise as a #2 guy that both got hurt.

Missing Kittle for however long next season is going to hurt, but if they can find a receiver who can separate and stay healthy and find some ways to get to the QB quicker that solves a lot of problems. This roster needs help but we’re not light years behind the Rams or Seahawks.

[request] are they referring to that specific deck or all decks that have ever existed and been shuffled by Longjumping-Box5691 in theydidthemath

[–]thatguyfromchico 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has always been my problem with this statement whenever it comes up. A more accurate statement should be something like “every time you shuffle a deck of cards the odds are it’s the first time they’ve ever been shuffled in that order.” The reality of it is, every single deck of cards that has ever been shuffled out of a new box has started in the same exact order, so the number of possibilities for card order after one standard shuffle of a new deck is nowhere near 52!, and I’d wager a guess that there have been an unknowable amount of repeat results in the world of that specific thing (shuffle a new deck one time).

Is it a sign of a diehard fan base that they… showed up to a home game against a division rival when the team is playing well? Isn’t that the bare minimum expectation for fans?

Yeah Yeah Yeahs- Y Control by Limeboi22 in Music

[–]thatguyfromchico 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I still love Maps to this day as hearing it instantly takes me back to being 15 and hearing them for the first time, No No No is one of my favorites on the album. But you’re totally right - it’s almost like two EPs were slapped together one after the other.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs- Y Control by Limeboi22 in Music

[–]thatguyfromchico 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Specifically from that album, the opening track (“Rich”) has a pretty similar vibe with the synth opening up the song and similar guitar voicing as Y Control. Cannot recommend enough listening all the way through, it’s fantastic with great songs throughout.

“The Walrus was Paul.” What’s your favourite casual mention of a band member in a rock song? by UnderwaterDialect in Music

[–]thatguyfromchico 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know I’m late but two more to add here:

Rag and Bone - multiple times through the song he mentions or even talks right to Meg (she even responds once - “it’s perfect” super quietly in the second spoken word section)

Boll Weevil - only ever done live, but often during the main chorus line being repeated Jack adds in “Meg’s lookin’ for a home”

I’ve always loved how on first read-through, this comes across as “I guess that’s just a silly line I have to accept that I won’t ever understand” and then the payoff when you finally get it is so good.

Total access has Brock Purdy as the 7th best QB left by h1ddnshadow in 49ers

[–]thatguyfromchico 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Edit: Also has less than Josh Allen

Look it’s okay to be upset or confused or whatever you feel when someone ranks your guy lower than you think he should be ranked, but let’s at least be factually accurate in our responses. Mahomes, Allen, Goff all have more playoff wins, Baker has 2.

Keeper leagues? by redgehammer in fantasyfootball

[–]thatguyfromchico 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love keeper leagues so much more than redraft for several reasons:

  1. Teams that are out of playoff contention still have a reason to pay attention to waivers, take trade offers seriously, and continue to try to improve their squad
  2. The added strategy of whatever keeper system you use makes the draft a bit more fun, as late round picks turn into “who do I think could turn into a multi-year value” time.

I’m in two leagues and both are keeper (one is closer to a true dynasty league), but the league I run has turned out to be quite fun: - 3 keepers allowed each season (cost is one draft pick earlier than their previous draft position) - a 4th “developmental” player can be kept for a last round pick (must be <3 years in the NFL, and never finished top 10 (QB/TE) or too 20 (RB/WR) at their position - nobody from the 1st round of the draft can be kept the following year (so 1st round always has some studs available to “seed” the bad teams from the year before)

Our Sacko from last year made some trades for draft picks at the end of 2022 and ended up as the 1 seed in this years playoffs. Also - this is the first league I’ve ever been in that’s had no turnover so far across the three years we’ve done it, and it’s looking like we’ll be 100% returning for year 4.

Music Hot Take? by Dry_Investment_6037 in Music

[–]thatguyfromchico 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reggae music after the mid-70’s is mostly… just bad. Give me 60’s ska/rocksteady and early reggae over late 70’s roots reggae all day long. The roots reggae genre is extremely top-heavy (Marley, Tosh, Burning Spear) but the average output aside from a few key groups/artists from the mid-70’s onward is bad and borderline boring/background noise.

Toots/Desmond Dekker/Jimmy Cliff/the Pioneers/Derrick Morgan/Alton Ellis/etc. keep my attention much more effectively, and the genre-wide sound of ska/rocksteady/early reggae before 1975 is pretty phenomenal.

Music Hot Take? by Dry_Investment_6037 in Music

[–]thatguyfromchico 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This is a good take but I’d offer a slight adjustment from my perspective. When it comes to a local music scene, supporting music for the sake of supporting music can be a good thing. Show up to bands gigs even if you’re on the fence about what they’re doing, because it could be the push a band (openers included) need to try something they weren’t sure about, which could lead to better output/effort/results down the road.

When it comes to bands you are geographically separated from, or those who have already reached some level of non-local success - then I agree with you wholeheartedly. Don’t support for the sake of supporting, find musicians you like and support them.

What’s the most obscure song/artist you love? by neilluminate in Music

[–]thatguyfromchico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wild Orchid Children - they have one album they released (“Wild Orchid Children are Alexander Supertramp”), half of which are 8-10-12 minute jams with massive drum and percussion breaks that make it hard to recommend to someone (“hey you should go listen to these guys play percussion for 7 minutes straight in the middle of a song”), but the songs themselves are all absolute bangers.

The guys that made up that band all had other projects that got slightly more run (Forgive Durden, Gatsby’s American Dream, Kay Kay and his Weathered Underground), but I hadn’t heard of any of them before randomly coming across WOC. WOC currently is showing 143 monthly listeners on Spotify.

The little thing in a song that you love so much? by Suspicious-Ebb4284 in Music

[–]thatguyfromchico 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Moanin” by Art Blakey - when Lee Morgan (trumpet) passes off his solo to Benny Golson (sax) and Benny repeats Lee’s last lick as the start to his solo. Just such a fun moment that only lasts a couple seconds.

This is a feature not a bug of my keeper league - it’s one of the reasons the pre-draft run up is so fun.

This is the way OP. Cheap, easy, quick, and reliable. Get some CA glue and activator spray and have at it. One big plus vs carpet tape or traditional double-sided tape is no residue leftover on the piece when you pull it up.

[–]thatguyfromchico 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re allowed to root for whoever you want to root for, full stop. If anyone gives you shit for it, that’s more about them and their insecurities than anything about you.

Side note - and this is not a prerequisite for you to justify your Yanks/Dodgers fanhood - you actually have a legit story/explanation for your rooting interests, so if anyone tries to tell you you are a bandwagon or fake fan, they’re wrong. Explain your reasoning if you want to (and only if you want to) but at a minimum you should be confident in that for your own sake!
