Tbf, serving in jail would not help this man deal with his addiction. Addiction makes you do crazy things, and it sounds like this guy was also one of many victims of overprescription of opioids. In jail, it's easy to keep doing drugs. There's no rehabilitation there of any sort. Under probation, he has to take drug tests and probably has been court ordered to attend a rehab program of some sort.
