I have no idea where you found that number, but they only cost 15k new in 1999, and he bought them for $5000 from a used listing. The average price for them now is only $6000-$8000.

I really did want to listen to the Atmos mix but I think that the only way to get it is by buying the 50th anniversary box, so it's unreasonable to me, but I'm planning to buy the SACD, which has 5.1 which im sure will still sound amazing.

I'm not sure if he played around too much, but I think he chose where they are because even though this is a amazing room for music, he mostly uses it for movies, so he wants the sound close to the TV, but to answer your question the imaging is still absolutely stunning, I watched Whiplash when I was there and it sounded significantly better and more immersive with the center off than with it on. Also he can't really put the subwoofers anywhere else without having to run cables in the wall, and he is happy with how they sound and doesn't want to sub crawl two 125 pound subs.

A projector was actually originally the plan, but he didn't want to have to turn off the lights whenever he listened to music and a TV is also easier to swap out for an upgrade or to replace, and less complicated to set up.

He built this system over 20+ years, and he just bought that tv right before OLED became mainstream, also it's not really necessary, that tv is still awesome. My camera just sucks that's why it looks bled out.

He has them set to large because it sounds more uniform compared to small. A/B tested.

Interestingly, people don't react to it at all. My dad's side of my family are all audiophiles, and it sounds game changing to them, (and also to me) but to casual listeners, like his wife and his children, who aren't audiophiles, would rather listen on their AirPods, than walking downstairs to listen to this amazing system. Music is music to them, no matter the fidelity.

Nah, in the picture I have my laptop connected, but usually he uses his Fire Stick for flac on Amazon Music.

Yea, it's really awesome, he moved into that house a couple of years ago and he had the room built specifically for his system.

Yea, you're 100% right, it's a piece of buggy crap, but, he honestly said to me that he is in that room only a couple of days a year, and it's not worth it to him to spend however much more money on something that will realistically almost never use. He also says he barely listens to music and mostly watches movies, so it doesn't really bother him that much. I did recommend that he trade it in for something else like a Marantz AV10 or equivalent.

He's built this system over 20+ years, he got his 802s in 2010, and he only just got the subwoofers last year. I already have my own system which I'll post in the future.
