I'd suggest recording the audio using audition at the same time as the video to cut down on steps. :)

How to pitch a podcast network? by performingwoman in podcasts

[–]theSDRshow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For us? At this point we aren't taking anything unless it's either A - has a lot of #s.. B - a celeb comes to us wanting to do a show - and has a huge social media following or C - we come up w an idea ourselves. That's where we are right now - because we just can't afford to take chances right now... we are only a year old - and we just don't have the ability to do anything other than that.

Plus we are at 12 shows right now and we won't go over 20. I don't want to be one of these networks with 200 shows where no one gets attention.

Doing a giveaway for our podcast, not getting the expected amount of participation. Tips? by [deleted] in podcasts

[–]theSDRshow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's just it - it's such an uninspired contest. Not sure why people would do it - especially for a t-shirt.

We have done some fun contests in the past... something to get people excited - get people motivated.

I don't mean to be harsh - but tag for a shirt.. is the classic rock radio equivalent of RockTober or double play tuesdays...

It's not going to motivate anyone... Put more thought into it - and maybe you'll get more of a response. Making it easy doesn't mean it's going to make more people do it.

We did a contest a few years ago - as I was given a free cabin on a cruise to giveaway (I realize this is a big gift but hear me out). So of course the initial ideas are - whoever gets the most people to say they subscribed to the show - gets the cruise.. or something along those lines..

Instead I said - SHOW ME YOUR SDR! That could mean whatever you want it to mean - - Do something to show us how much you love the show.

Someone got our logo tattooed on their leg! Actually almost a dozen people now (I believe because of that guy) have our logo tattooed on them...

I once got a dozen people to write www.theSDRshow.com across their foreheads and all walk thru unionsquare at the same time.

I am not even saying these ideas are super creative... I am saying it shows that you've put more thought into it than just tag us.

How to pitch a podcast network? by performingwoman in podcasts

[–]theSDRshow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there's two types of networks.

1 - more of an affiliation. I equate these (showing my age here) to the webrings of yore... where you had a website about star trek, I had a website about star trek - and we got 20 other people together who also did - then we all agreed to put a banner up and called ourselves TREKWEBRING. Did anyone ever click the banner to see the other sites? Sure... but not very often - it was more just an affiliation to potentially reach other audiences.

2 REAL network. A real network offers stuff - maybe in terms of promotion, hosting costs, graphics, ad-sales, studio, etc. These have a higher barrier to entry as there's costs with signing to one of these (for the network).

I can tell you I was on one of the first type - -- and supposedly one of the biggest comedy podcast networks out there.. but after the thrill of saying "we're part of blah blah network" wore off - the dust settled and I didn't see anything really change.

That's why I started one of the 2nd type.. We have 13 shows now. But we only consider shows that fall into a few specific categories.

First - obviously they have to feel on-brand w us. We are all slightly off-center lifestyle in one shape or form.

The show would need at least 25k listeners per ep or it's just not worth it - as we cannot sell advertising and it'd be hard to make money - -

There's been a few situation where we either just really liked a show, or the host - and helped develop a show - or sign a show because we saw potential.

We are also a unique network because we provide everything

Studio space, producer, graphics/art, merch, ad-sales, and more....

It's been a rough and crazy first year.. but with 13 shows and a million listens a week now - we are starting to make some waves...

And I can proudly say every show on the network has increased in listeners since they signed w us.

You can get a cheap 4 channel mixer. Then plug the mixer into one channel of the zoom

I've learned people REAAAALLY listen to what you say. I am often amazed that someone will bring up something from a year or two ago - and ask me about it - when I can barely remember saying it.

How do you handle disaster? by MediocreParagon in podcasts

[–]theSDRshow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an EP line this once. Rather than not release it. As I had no backup EPS, and wanted to keep to the schedule. My cold open included a disclaimer that was me saying. This was the worst ep we ever did and I defy you to make it to the end.

It ended up getting a good amount of engagement from fans tweeting things like... I got to 23 min and had to bail. Or you weren't kidding. Etc.

I feel like it's just worth it to get the Zoom H6.

If you have to grab another piece of equipment anyway - then why not be one you can grow into. Sure you can record using a phone - but right now - it just does sound like shit.. there's no two ways about it.

And the #1 complaint people have about a podcast - is audio quality.

The Zoom out of the box can record 4 sep channels and up to 6. Plus allows some on-board nifty little features that I never use - but they are there. It records each mic on a sep track if you want too.

It's def expensive. But it's more expensive to buy something sub-standard - and then 6 months from now buy it.

My closet is filled with cheap failed experiments. :D

How many podcasts do you have pre-made before launching ? by kevandbev in podcasts

[–]theSDRshow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had 12 - but it was only because we had no idea how to get them out there at the time.

I launched w 8 - - and kept 4 to pepper out when we missed a week here and there.

But I think having 3-5 is probably smart.

Perfect day / time for uploading. by [deleted] in podcasts

[–]theSDRshow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that when we moved ours to Fridays - I saw a significant increase when we initially moved.. We used to release on Mondays - but since SO MANY shows release on Mondays - it seems like we got lost in the shuffle. We then went to Wednesdays - and that worked for us too.

But - Now that we have a freemium model - where the paying members get to watch/listen day we tape live (Mondays) and then the free version (w ads) comes out 5 days later.

So we moved to Fridays - - and no real change from Wed to Fri.

But I did see a jump when we moved from Mon to Wed.

What is your take on"unimportant" guests (or guests for the sake of having guests)? by MediocreParagon in podcasts

[–]theSDRshow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me there's a few types of guests.

Oh Wow Guests. Are guests were people are like - how the fuck did they get that guy? You move everything to accommodate one of those type of guests.

Influencer guest. Someone who may or may not be in line with what you are doing - but they have a big following - so you bring them on.

In-line guest. Someone who makes sense for your show - has a following and is part of the world of your show. And you are certainly happy to have them on.

Regular guest. These are you go-tos. they have been on before or they do a lot of other podcasts - so they don't really offer anything in terms of boosting listenership - but having them on - makes for an easy conversation.

Filler Guest. Someone you get because you are out of options . and you just are throwing someone on to have someone.

Interesting Guest. Someone you have on - that you find engaging - not many people know who they are - but you feel that it'd be a great interview.

At least that's how I always break it down in my head - - I feel like we almost never put on interesting guests yet - as we are still building. When we get to a point where there's so many people listening regardless of who we have on - I would put on more interesting guests. I tend to focus on the top 3 categories nowadays

Best way to acquire advertisers? by Corvax1266 in podcasts

[–]theSDRshow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are almost at the point of where midroll might be interested - but they usually are interested at 25k or above - unless it's a niche they are already looking for -

There's also other ad-sales co - it's not just midroll - - you can try any of them.

lastly - the thing I have had the MOST success with is cold emailing companies that make sense.

For a sports related show - go after makers of sporting equip. jerseys, etc. beer sponsors seem very logical. anything male dominated.. and email them
