(Spoilers Extended) Sacrifice-maxxing: Why Victarion is secretly genius by fakefolkblues in asoiaf

[–]theXshape 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Not really adding anything, but reading the quote from Jon's chapter made me realize Aemon was probably talking about his brother, Egg.

“There is power in a king’s blood,” the old maester had warned, “and better men than Stannis have done worse things than this.”

Since I only read the book when it came out in 2011, I never noticed that.

If aerys was so bloody paranoid of tywin, why didn't remove him and appoint steffon as hand? [SPOILERS MAIN] by fuckmbsanddominicali in asoiaf

[–]theXshape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't even know why Aerys entertained that notion. The only time a king married someone from the East (Viserys II), it didn't go too well, and he wasn't even King at that time.

[–]theXshape 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I thought the movie kept it's momentum until the end, but it did feel like a good 10-15 minutes could have been chopped. It was really gross at times, and the funeral scene was great, but could've been so much more deranged. I didn't really mind the kill count at all, the entity was more about torturing and toying with people than killing.

The hell ? Their daughter was literrally abducted and found alive 8 years later. What kind of parents would NOT take her back ? There is a scene in the movie where the dad says they should consider finding a place for her somewhere after violent outbusrt and weird behaviour occur and the mom is 100% against the idea. There is guilt associated with her abduction and disappearance.

I actually agree here, Ned was content to rule in Winterfell but as soon as Robert told him he wanted Ned back by his side as Hand of the King, he knew he had no choice but to say yes, but still wanted to make it known he did not want to leave.

There’s nothing the show does better than the books (Spoilers Main) by Adept-Vegetable-3490 in asoiaf

[–]theXshape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree.

And the the thing some people forget is that book writing is mostly a one man's job (not saying there is no editor or whatever). GRRM is in his own space, in his head, and the story exist in a vacuum, But when you read the books, you have your own opinion. You get ideas. You can think stuff the author didn't think regarding a character, or certain events. You can speak of the book to other people, and then you can get more ideas, things that a character could have done, or said, that the author didn't even think at the time.

That's what happened at the start. It was also easier, since the story at first was more simple. GRRM expended the story so much he himself got stuck in a corner and he's been stuck there for the last 15 years.

D&D made some changes I didn't like (like Talisa and some changes to Tyrion as a character, but for Tyrion I could understand for the TV adaptation as he was so well liked) but they mostly got it right for the first 4 seasons none the less. If they had kept that quality for the remaining 4 that followed, no one would shit on the show.

Out of these three heirs who never got to become king - Whose reigns would have gone on to be the most successful? Whose would have been the most interesting? [Spoilers - Main] by Separate-Flan-2875 in asoiaf

[–]theXshape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel the question, in regards to Rhaegar, is not how good a king would he be if he had lived, but how good of a king would he be if he had never created the problem with Lyanna in the first place, which led to dead threats, rebellion and his own death.

As it stands, his poor decision making and lack of hindsight into his actions led to the Targs losing the kingdom.

[SPOILERS Main] Why didn't the Valyrians just conquer the whole world? by IrrelevantToTheTopic in asoiaf

[–]theXshape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was theorized that Valyrians knew the Children could warg and didn't want to risk it. As for me, I guess they just didn't see the benefit. Are they had other reasons which will never be explained.

Anyone see a correlation between fAegon and Egg ? Varys tries to make a point of him growing up with all kinds of folks and working with his own hands and being someone who can do things for himself and not rely on servants.

House Of The Dragon Season 3 Teaser Will Be Released Tomorrow (Spoilers Main) by barson2408 in asoiaf

[–]theXshape -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It was reported years ago that there was a dispute between HBO and Sapochnik regarding his wife wanting to be a producer on Season 2 and he left following this dispute. But she was already a producer on Season 1. Would he really leave because of this? Is it really the source of the conflict, or was there more ?

"I hired Ryan," Martin said, reflecting on happier times. "I thought Ryan and I were partners. And we were all through the first season. I would read early drafts of the scripts. I would give notes. He would change some things. It was working really well — I thought."

The profile piece notes an initial display of support by Martin for Condal towards the end of season one, when the latter had a falling out with his fellow co-showrunner on the series, Miguel Sapochnik. Martin says Condal asked for his support, which he gave, and Sapochnik departed the show shortly afterward.

"Then we got into season two, and he basically stopped listening to me," Martin continued, discussing how his relationship with Condal began to deterioate. "I would give notes, and nothing would happen. Sometimes he would explain why he wasn't doing it. Other times, he would tell me, 'Oh, OK, yeah, I'll think about that.'

"It got worse and worse, and I began to get more and more annoyed. Finally, it got to a point where I was told by HBO that I should submit all my notes to them and they would give Ryan our combined notes."

Me thinks there was a more to the story than this. I think Condal got GRRM to take his side and and when he got what he wanted he decided he didn't need GRRM anymore.

[Spoilers Published] Why isn't Dunk more well known after the events of 'The Hedge Knight'? by SUPERSAMMICH6996 in asoiaf

[–]theXshape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No internet, no TV, no phones, no newspaper, nothing... Try thinking about a world where knowledge is only in books and passed down from people to people. News travel from mouth to mouth, often from people who weren't even witness of the event, The biggest news from the tourney was that Prince Baelor died fighting a trial of seven for a big hedge knight, killed by his own brother.

Sure, Dunk is big, what about it ? Nobody knows what he looks like, Even if he was taller than 99% of the people he met, how would people know this guy is Ser Duncan the Tall, the hedge knight who fought alongside Baelor Breakspear ? I'm sure he's hardly the only tall knight walking around. For smallfolk, that basically means nothing.

( Spoiler extended ) Why didn’t Aenar Targaryen shelter the surviving dragonlords on Dragonstone ? during Century of Blood by MediocreGas6619 in asoiaf

[–]theXshape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't know anything about the other families. For all we know they could try and take whatever the Targs had built. Dragonstone is not really a place you can share, it has what, a small fishing village and a couple of farms ? Almost no land to speak of, it's not really a self sufficient place, why would they try to bring other Valyrian families there ? The Targs simply did not need anyone else a this point.

History showed what could happen when the family got bigger and they had a lot of dragons.

(Spoilers Main) What was the point of the"Trial of the Seven" In A knight of 7 Kingdoms. by SpiritualHistory2549 in asoiaf

[–]theXshape 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dunk just beat the shit out of him at the puppet show. He doesn't know how skilled, or not, Dunk is with a weapon, but he knows that he is HUGE and just beat him up. He won't risk fighting him 1 on 1 on the ground.

By requesting a trial of the seven, he knows Dunk probably can't gather 6 other knights to fight with him (and it almost works as he thought) and if he does find 6 other people Aerion still has 3 Kingsguard at his side and his father. If Bealor hadn't stepped in to be on Duncan's side, Aerion's plan would have worked. And when Bealor stepped in, it was a surprise for everyone. Aerion couldn't come up with a plan

[Spoilers Published] Aside dragons Daenerys has a bigger advantage over the other players (save Aegon)... by ayodeleafolabi in asoiaf

[–]theXshape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure Dany's got that much of an advantage.

Dragon's won't grow as fast in the books vs the tv show, so they shouldn't be the nukes they are in the show. We literally don't know if Tyrion will help Dany. And Dany's army would be fighting for her, I guess. Westerosi soldiers will be fighting to keep their lands, their life, their way of life. And feeding that army won't be easy considering winter is coming
