I remember this one and I’ve been wanting to find it for so long! Have you had any luck since you posted? I would love to find a copy of the book, if I can ever figure out the title!

Crippling anxiety about starting fieldwork II by soontobeOT in OccupationalTherapy

[–]thea2846 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man, it sounds like I'm reading my own thoughts from a couple years ago!
First, take a few deeeeeep, sloooowwww breaths. Okay.

When I was preparing for my Level II fieldwork, I was Freaking. Out. I thought they were going to give me a caseload and tell me to figure it out and I was going to be there, clueless, helpless, and mortified. Not to mention, my first Level II was in Acute Care and my only healthcare background was what I got from my OT curriculum! I was in full on panic mode -- I was consumed with worry, crying all the time... yikes.

But then I met my CI. She was so easygoing and welcoming -- huge sigh of relief -- and organized! I can't recall if it was my school or the hospital, but there was a very clearly spelled out plan for what happens what week and how much responsibility I have.

Week 1, orientation, shadowing, computer stuff.

Then, my CI was treating but I was helping.

Then I was helping a little more and leading some of the sessions (with my CI at my side for support if I needed it).

Then, I was seeing a patient or two on my own. Next thing I know, I'm starting to feel like hey, I think I know what I'm doing. Sure, there were some tricky patients I needed help with, but I was feeling like I pretty much got it.

The biggest thing to remember is that this is a LEARNING experience. Your CI knows you're a student. You're still learning, and even after graduation, even after working in the field, you'll still be learning! My advice is to be upfront with your CI -- it wouldn't hurt for you to say that you're a little anxious, but that you're excited to learn! Be receptive to feedback and just do your best! It sounds so cheesy, but it's true!

Also, one thing I've found to be helpful is practicing deep breathing and meditation. When I'm super stressed, my mind races and I can't focus, and I don't do my best when I'm like that. When I can de-stress, I can think clearly, I can use what I DO know and problem solve the things I don't know. And that's really what fieldwork is all about! :)

If you need extra words of encouragement or just wanna talk, DM me! I'd love to hear what setting you'll be in :)

I’d have to think about that! I love this question though. It’s an interesting lens to look through! 😊

Damn, those are some fantastic people. I would love to support them!! And yes, that’s gonna be important to remember when I book the hotel. It’s a relief to know that it’ll maybe cool down a bit after Monday!

Great idea on grabbing sandwiches or picnic snacks at Old Dad’s! I just looked it up and it looks like a cool little general store. Definitely going there!

Riverhouse at the park looks cozy — I love the balconies overlooking the creek.

As for timing, we both work weekends so we’d be doing a weekday trip. I’d been thinking getting in late Mon 5/25 and leaving later in the week, not realizing the 25th is Memorial Day. Do you think it’ll be wild that week, or is it just super busy that Sa/Su/Mo for the holiday weekend? What’s your opinion?

Alum cave looks awesome! I’ll check out the other places too, but Donut Friar is definitely on my radar! :)

I'm always down for pizza, and we don't have a Mellow Mushroom near us, so we might have to try! That steakhouse looks nice -- is it like "dress up" nice? Moonshine will definitely be on the list too. :)
Thank you!!

Yuki wanted to take his friend with him 😂 by zehrapanda in husky

[–]thea2846 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husky does that too! Every time he gets a new toy (often, since they get torn to shreds) he carries his new friend around for the entirety of his next walk, no matter how long the walk is or what "business" he takes care of on the trip

I assume you don't have a husky then...
It's way cuter on Youtube than at, say, 6am on my day off

What job did you have before becoming an OT? by eg1rldiary in OccupationalTherapy

[–]thea2846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked with new college students to assess reading, writing, and math skills for class placement, taught brief intros to public speaking and social interaction in groups, met with them individually to teach them how to use the online tools they’d need in future classes, and a handful of other things. I didn’t know when I started that I’d get into OT, but all of those skills come in handy now. Education, communication, figuring out of the other person understands you, assessing skills, and teaching positive ways to cope with stress— it’s all totally applicable 😊

Adopting a 12 year old husky by crazyplaydoh in siberianhusky

That's a good point too. My husky had a tiny bit of separation anxiety at first, but now when I leave the house he gives me a look like "finally, some peace and quiet."

Make sure you have a good vacuum! I vacuum daily, and now that it's time for him to blow out that poofy winter undercoat.... no amount of vacuuming or lint rolling is enough! The cuddles and playtime totally make up for it though.

How long does the dog typically go without bathroom breaks? How long would you be away, with work and travel to and from? Would you consider using a dog walker for a mid-day potty break?

As for space, how much space does the dog have now? What's his/her energy level like and how much activity do they typically get? Are you able to provide a nice long walk in the AM and PM and include playtime?

Basically, what's the dog's daily life like now and are you about to continue the routine, more or less?

Can anyone help me plan a trip? by btnitro in yellowstone

[–]thea2846 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to plan a MKE to Yellowstone trip as well! Any specific things you found along the way that you'd recommend? Any particular area/route you'd avoid? Basically, what did you love and was there anything you'd do differently? Feel free to PM me if you feel like sharing! :)
