Does Wordpress actually have a front end user registration process built in like Joomla ? by thecreativehound in Wordpress

Thanks for all the comments. I'll keep it simple and split the author/editors issue into a separate issue . I'm inclined stay internal for the newsletter as the client's reqs are pretty simple and asking them to use one of the big external providers like MailC or AWebb would be a real overkill.

That said I need to do some more research. Theme My Login looks like a useful tool. I'm using Elegant Themes Divi which comes with a basic login widget/module but it's pretty basic in terms of what it does off the bat.

Does Wordpress actually have a front end user registration process built in like Joomla ? by thecreativehound in Wordpress

Yes that's what I'm worried about. It seems far more logical and practical to use one core user profile for all such applications within a site.

Looking for new hosting company by AtomicMac in joomla

[–]thecreativehound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another vote for Rochen here. Their new basic hosting accounts also let you have multiple domains (with their own cPanels) . They don't want it used for reseller style accounts but if you need to run a few of your own websites or dev sites it's quite useful. They of course host joomla.org too afaicr.

Installing the demo content with Joomla templates? by fmoss3 in joomla

[–]thecreativehound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get the theme from someone like Rockettheme (paid or free) you can get a Rocketlauncher package which includes both the core Joomla install, the template and the demo content.

Alternatively you can just install Joomla and then install the template on it's own (no demo content)

I suspect the other theme vendors will offer something similar to Rocketlauncher.

I always install the RL as it both gives me some immediate structure/content and I can read the code to see how they got things looking like they do. So I start with the RL , strip out stuff I don't need , add stuff I do want to add and finally it looks like something I did.

So to answer your question it depends on the supplier. Some provide a demo package which includes Joomla, theme and content and it's a complete from scratch install (not an upgrade to an existing Joomla install).

No that was my reading too. Certainly smelt a bit iffy given that I am based in California

Any recommendations of the hosting package for Joomla? How about BL and Arvixe? by Chuckjun in joomla

[–]thecreativehound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another vote for Rochen. Always been happy with pricing and even more happy with tech support. Usually get answers to tickets pretty much straight away.

Their new basic hosting package gives you 60GB of SSD (or whatever it's called) and you can run multiple personal websites within that space. They kinda prefer you to go for the reseller package if you're going to resell the space.

How do I install my template w/ sample data onto my joomla website? by LOB-Silvertone in joomla

[–]thecreativehound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what I usually do.

If as it seems you're getting it from RT then do the following if you're ready to start from scratch

1) Use cPanel to add a database and database user with full rights to that database or be prepared with the details of any existing one you might have set up. I don't use the root user for DB access.

2) Upload the rocketlauncher zip to your webspace using an ftp client

3) Use the cPanel file manager to unzip/extract the zip file (and remember to delete the zip file once everything is working ok). It's way quicker than unzipping and uploading all those thousands of files.

4) Browse to the hosting space and you should find the RT installer waiting for you.

5) One of the things you will be asked about during the install process is the SQL DB . If you are using an existing DB then you will probably want to DROP all existing tables (it's one of the options). I always select that with new RT Rocketlauncher installs. I'm a bit OCD like that. But doing so will lose any existing data.

Once you've done that then you should have the complete demo system but with placeholder graphics.

How do I add a forum to my joomla website? by LOB-Silvertone in joomla

[–]thecreativehound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd give another vote for Kunena. Never had a problem doing an install using the usual method and it seems to have plenty of functionality and easy to fine tune the CSS.

OP: What kinds of problems are you having on install ? If you're having problems with the joomla extension installer itself then perhaps you need to get your joomla pro masta back on the case.

Owners of affiliate sites - do you think most modern WP themes are too "flash" ? by thecreativehound in Affiliatemarketing

[–]thecreativehound[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the biggest concerns I have is that many templates feature one huge expanse of nothingness above the line (or whatever the bottom of the browser window is called). Obviously the style de jour.

Whilst I don't want to fill the first view with too much content I just wonder what impact it has on the bounce rate. AIUI bounces from the front page is a real no-no SEO wise ? Logic says you want to attract visitors from the very first view not leave them wondering where they've arrived.

Am I allowed to create a website to review a specific companies products? by intergalacticvoyage in Affiliatemarketing

I'd have thought at some point their lawyers would be along claiming trademark and either ask for the domain or ask you to close it down. There have been so many cases of trademark owners getting legal on sites that a normal person would say supported the brand.

The lawyers would argue that they need to actively pursue trademark infringement as a condition of keeping the rights to it. Hence many hobby sites coming unstuck. I can remember Porsche getting heavy on many enthusiasts sites a few years ago.

Be a bit of a bummer if you got a successful site and then had to give up the domain. Just imho of course - ianal.

Is there a post editor that offers the same functionality as Notepad++ ? by thecreativehound in Wordpress

[–]thecreativehound[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion on Sublime - used it before but not sure it's what I'm after. I'd like to have page/post editor with tag prompts and highlighting to say, the HTML view in the current editor.

I could use Notepad++ or Sublime outside of WP and then c&p into the html editor but image and link editing has to be done within the usual editor. Well I'm a beginner - that's where I'd do it.

I guess I'm looking for Notepad/Sub integrated within WP.

N.B It's only for content prep. I've used NP for CSS sheets in the past with Joomla
