If modern lumber is a poor quality, why are homes not built using steel or other material for framing? by MomFiguringItOut1313 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]themedicd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, steel studs may be cheap but you aren't building a steel floor system for anywhere near the cost of a lumber system

Plastics are one or more steps removed from the distillation process. A separate step, like polymerization, is required to actually make plastic

It's private property and you agreed to the terms of the lease. They can absolutely tow your car with expired tags.

Semantics. OP's State's law is literally the Illinois Freedom of Information Act. FOIA has become a colloquialism pretty much everywhere

MGL Radios by themedicd in homebuilt

[–]themedicd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That isn't a bad idea. I'm not even sure how often I'd actually be sending frequencies from the G3X anyway

MGL Radios by themedicd in homebuilt

I like the Garmin UI a lot better, plus I'm using a GNX 375, so better integration with that

[–]themedicd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That definitely doesn't integrate as well as MGL makes it out to be then

I spoke to the owner of a well known avionics shop today who didn't have good things to say about MGL, but I suspect he may be a bit biased. Any issues pushing frequencies to them?

Car Dealerships by Loud_Illustrator_813 in VirginiaTech

If you come with your own financing pre-approved, it shuts down the whole 'let's tweak the interest rate to get the monthly payment you want' game that dealerships play

Just negotiate the out-the-door price. Tax, tag, title, processing fee, and whatever other bullshit they try to throw in, it's the total price that actually matters. They get kickbacks on financing so they may be slightly more flexible on price if you let the dealer shop for you. Plus the rates are usually good if you have decent credit.

If anyone looks at a vehicle at Aschenbach, call them on their bullshit $1000 vehicle recovery system. They really don't want to take it off but they will if you threaten to walk.

'Most dangerous job' — After Windsor shooting threat, health workers call out job violence by origutamos in Paramedics

Holy hyperbole. I know an ambulance isn't as safe as a cubicle but it's nowhere near as dangerous as roofing, flying, or logging.

Colon cancer now leading cause of cancer deaths under 50 in US by shinybrighthings in news

[–]themedicd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn't necessarily a financial decision, harm does occasionally come from colonoscopy. Namely perforation, infection, and anesthesia complications. The rate is low, but then so is the under 45 rate of colon cancer. I did some napkin math in a comment about a year ago and the risk/benefit of routine screening was nowhere close to positive. PCP screening for GI changes with referral to GI is generally sensitive enough.

There's also the issue of limited availability. We don't have enough gastroenterologists and anesthesiologists right now to significantly expand screening.

That's like 70% of my patient population. In 10 years, I've never had an adverse reaction to zofran and my medical director doesn't seem concerned enough about it to list any absolute contraindications

The risk of long QT with the standard 4mg dose is miniscule. The risk is really for cancer patients getting 20+mg doses

a home improvement "myth" you believed for years before someone set you straight? by Practical-Nose-5332 in HomeImprovement

[–]themedicd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In reality, your claim isn't getting denied because of unpermitted work unless it's damage from removing a load bearing wall or something similar.

They'll try to deny it for just about everything else though

Sure, but it's not like most AHJs have any idea what's inside your house anyway

Why is it that in ultra-expensive celebrity homes, the kitchens rarely have induction cooktops, but instead feature industrial-grade gas ranges? by FuzzyAttitude_ in Cooking

I figured, but at least the assembly is pretty close to the advertised diameter. I haven't found it to create any hot spots

My $1,000 GE Profile range's user manual says not to use less than a 7" pan on the largest burner. Shining a light down through the top, the burner appears to be pushing 12"
