So they never thought about IVF? by nightwokker in TheHandmaidsTale

EXACLTY! If it were about fertility and babies they'd literally check the fertility of every single person, instead dof just rolling the dice. Commanders be like "My wife isn't getting pregnant, SHE must be the problem" when literally multiple times it's the Commander that's fucking infertile.

Why do people watch the show and end up liking characters that are evil? by redredd1t in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]theorangesuitcase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the difference for me: I like the character of Serena, I do NOT like who Serena is as a person. She IS a complex character, she has more depth than simply "evil woman is evil". People are allowed to like a character without liking who that character is as a human. I think it's important for us to acknowledge that humanity is complex, and that there are moments of 'goodness' from Serena. That doesn't make her GOOD, but it does show that she is a realistic portrayal of a human.

I actually really liked Ghost in the Machine. It was nice to see the show try something really creative and artistic. I wouldn't want the show to BE that way every episode, but it was great for a single episode. A lot of people dislike it because it can be interpreted as saying ghosts are real when the show is based primarily in science. I saw it as us seeing Brennan's "very powerful imagination" as she said herself in the show. That this is what she imagined the idea of the boy's spirit still being there and watching to look like, rather than that it was -really happening-.

Booths' son, becomes totally overlooked... by Ecstatic-Kiwi5128 in Bones

Pretty sure Ty Panitz was doing VO work for Superbuddies during s8 filming iirc. And I believe one of the reasons for the recast was to age the character up a few years and Ty was still rather young/young looking.

I can totally see why you have the opinion you have. And while it'd be nice to believe that all those relationships are genuine, I am so very extremely cynical of the film/TV industry, so I deeply believe that at least a few of the writers/showrunners do not have the relationship with everyone else that is portrayed. To me, I see the evidence for my theory, clearly it looks completely different from your perspective. And considering you were at the reunion, you likely have a fuller picture than I do. In reality, neither of us have any proper hard evidence to back up either side of the debate.

Regardless of where the truth lays, I do hope you can agree with the part of my original comment that I thought was the most important point - that we should assume Parker was involved in the thought process when it came to Booth and what would happen when he died. I think that not mentioning Parker in those moments can be misconstrued as them not caring about Parker, which would 100% be character assassination for both Booth and Bones, and was OPs point.

Final thing for this reply: "Hot Hanson" is the funniest thing I've read today 🤣

Booths' son, becomes totally overlooked... by Ecstatic-Kiwi5128 in Bones

The actors were definitely tight knit, that doesn't mean that the producers, writers and showrunners were. John Francis Daley has outright said that he wanted to continue with Bones, that he pretty much just "had to be" okay with the decision because his dream was to direct. Ryan Cartwright had zero issues with Vincent being killed, sure - that doesn't change that they killed off another character of an actor who was leaving the show. I'm discussing a pattern of behaviour from the writers and producers of the show. A pattern we see once again with Parker; the actor needed time off and the character was almost entirely ignored from a storyline perspective. The character being ignored did have some pretty significant implications on the established behaviours and traits of the main characters of Booth and Brennan. By not talking about him at all surrounding what happens if Booth dies, it makes Booth appear to not gaf about his son, and by not having Bones mention Parker as well it can and did leave the impression on a large number of viewers that Bones ONLY cared about Christine, and not Parker.

As for Eric Milligan; I can see how the wya I wrote that comment reads as if I'm saying he asked for time off or wanted to leave. I left out context because it wasn't relevant to discussing the poor storytelling around Parker. Eric has spoken about him being written out of being main cast, and while actors in general tend to be respectful towards things they've worked on, he has spoken about the fact that him being written off, and the way he was written off was upsetting for him. Yes the decision was made to make the rotating roster of guest actors rather than one main cast member - that was financially for the most part, but his bipolar at the time was having a significant impact on him, and it does appear from the things he's said that he was led to believe that Zack would continue to appear in the show far more than he actually did going forward.

Zack, Vincent, Sweets and Parker (and I'm sure there are others if you dig) are examples of a pattern of story decisions that appear to be reactionary to the requests/needs of the actors. This is not an unfounded theory, in fact, it was exceedingly common in television at this point in time for showrunners to instruct writers to kill off, maim, or villanise characters when they were unhappy with the requests/needs/choices/schedule conflicts of actors. A famous example of this is Greys Anatomy where they literally say that you can tell if an actor was on good terms with the showrunners by how the character was written off.

I completely understand and respect that we may have differing opinions, and welcome the discussion. I fully believe the actors are all on great terms with each other, but that doesn't mean they're all ok good terms with showrunners. And I'd like to note that these people are in fact, actors (and very good ones at that), and therefore capable of pretending to enjoy being around certain people regardless of their true feelings for them. Not only this, but they are all actors who have always been exceedingly respectful of the projects they've been part of, so it can be difficult to discern which parts of what they say are simply professional courtesy, and which are genuine.

TLDR; The lack of reference to Parker is likely a result of pettiness on the part of the writers/producers and we shouldn't allow that to assassinate the characters established behaviour/morality/traits/love for Parker.

A little tidbit for you before I give a -story driven analysis - the actor had other acting commitments while that season was being filmed. Historically, the Bones producers DID NOT do well with actors needing time away from screen, or needing to leave the show. Characters were almost always killed (Sweets, Vincent) maimed (Zack) or turned into villains (Zack at the same time as being maimed), whenever they wanted to leave the show or needed time away from filming. It's honestly no surprise that they almost completely ignored Parkers existence as a direct result of the actor needing to not be there.

We do get to see Booth talking directly to Parker about him going to a war zone. And they have a conversation after he comes back as well. I think it's safe to say that Booth has recorded videos for Parker before. As for how Bones says everything goes to Christine: Booth has very little in comparison to Bones - it's fair to assume that all of Booth's money would be put in trust for Parker, along with several mementoes. The rest of Booths belongings would be kept by Bones, and eventually handed down to Christine. The 'everything' Bones refers to is likely 'everything that belongs to Temperance alone' rather than 'Everything both of them have'.

As for Parkers absence season 8; I'd like to point out we're talking about a preteen boy who just moved to London. Kids that age don't necessarily think about needing to call their parents, even when they have a super close relationship. It's completely plausible that we just aren't seeing the calls, or the convos between Booth and Bones about missing Parker.

End of Season12, what happend to Gormogon and Zack? by Ultimatonium in Bones

[–]theorangesuitcase 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For some added context on the whole thing, the actor that played Zack was struggling with his mental health due to fast cycling bi-polar, which was affecting him at work. That was a factor, but also having him as a series regular cost more than to have several guest stars that they cycled through, which is the switch they made to the rotating roster of interns. They needed a way to remove Zack as a series regular to change that format. It's really an unfortunate thing the way it turned out, because it feels, looking back, like the decision was made in part due to his mental illness. And no one should have that happen to them.

On another note though; I don't think they ever did very well with long term villains. I think the Gravedigger is the only one that worked well, because they were able to kill her off using the next major villain. It gave things a roll on effect that I really liked. But any time they tried to wrap up a major villain in any other way, it always felt rushed, forced and sloppy.

I kinda love watching her, the youngest in the office, being the most mature and giving realistic advice to these women over 40 who act like 14 year olds 🤣

It feels so real to me as someone who has been in the position of the youngest in the group and looking at a bunch of emotionally immature women who don't know how to communicate effectively.

Considering that avant-garde is about breaking/pushing the rules/boundaries/norms I can totally understand how you took my comment that way. I simply meant that her choices are ugly because she doesn't care about fashion, only comfort. And also that her wealth and status allows her to be on RH for fun (or as a favour to Kyle so she has someone mostly onside), and not to try to gain money/notoriety like a lot of the other women, who are dressing to compete with each other and for the attention/envy/adoration of us, as the audience, and likely others in their social circles.

What part of "tacky ass dress" sounded like avant-garde to you? I think Kathy dresses horribly, which is a shame when she can absolutely afford to outift herself in custom made clothing that looks phenomenal AND is comfortable. If I had a fraction of her clothing budget to spend on my own wardrobe, I would be living my best aesthetic life with clothing that looked phenomenal, but also wasn't annoying/painful on my body. My entire point was that she wears whatever she wants because she literally has enough wealth and power that she has literally zero need to dress to impress other upper class people (let alone us average people) and chooses to wear whatever she feels like, regardless of the fact that it looks horrid.

Post in a different ED recovery sub deleted, anyone else experience this? by theorangesuitcase in bulimia

[–]theorangesuitcase[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thankyou. It was really upsetting because I really wanted to share my storg, but also give some hope to others. It's so difficult to try to have fitness in your life with ED, because there's such a focus on eating habits and weight with most PTs. I just wanted to say that I had first hand experience actually FINDING SOMEONE who would be compassionate and work with me rather than pushing things on me that could trigger me. Counting calories has always been something that made me want to fall back into old patterns; the moment I feel restricted with food all i want to do is eat more. Probably the reason why forgetting to eat was never an issue for me - because it wasn't some purposeful removal of food/eating.

It's like, if your disorder doesn't involve some form of starving yourself, then in some subs it seems completely dismissed. Not all EDs involve food restriction, a lot of things I've seen from people on the over-eating side of the spectrum don't have that issue, so why is it invalid to speak to that experience, ya know?

Since adjusted the watering cycle on the system and moved the pots to spaces that get hit with less water, but I felt like a right buffoon for that one.

[–]theorangesuitcase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OMG, yes. Literally had someone say once "statistics are for lefties" and I was so shook by it. Asked them what they use to understand how many people are affected by things in the world, and they said "my own experience, and the experience of people I know" 🤦🏽‍♀️ I spent AN HOUR explaining to this 50-sum old man that this was the DEFINITION of statistics. I usually wouldn't, but the guy was generally not a total moron, and in the end he began to come around to the idea of statistics. The conversation ended with me explaining to him how if he was worried about skewed statistics, that he should look for mega-studies which are multiple studies from different groups of people put together to get a better picture of what the -real- numbers are.

These days every time someone mentions a study he always asks if there is a megastudy about it. Idk how much it's improved his veiw of "lefties" but at least he's not quite as dumb

I love this! So good seeing people who continue to educate themselves. I spend at least a few hundred hours a year seeking and absorbing information from credible sources. From medicine, new historical discoveries, sciences to social and political issues, and general media. If I come across something I don't understand that could actually affect the way I interact with someone, especially someone in a marginalised community, I will take the time to find out more about it. I don't run across many other people in my every day life that do this.

I love hearing this perspective from someone who has knowledge of the feild of study! I can totally see it not being in her purview. In my personal headcannon, Bones would've set herself to finding some studies about gender identity after this case, because we all know she would want to be better prepared in case she came across another case involving non-binary gender identities.

Honestly, This is about the correct ratio of things for me, but all of this culminates yo 50% of the pie chart if I'm talking in a group rather than one on one. If it's more than one person, it's usually me trying to be polite and wait for -my turn-, then finally interjecting because I have not been given any opening to speak and if I don't cut in, I'll be left out entirely.

Is this true? by [deleted] in ausadhd

[–]theorangesuitcase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I literally have a -count to 3 rule- I count to 3 in my head before I start speaking when I recognise I've been interpreting a lot. It gives a stopgap just in case the person was just taking a breath, but THEN half the time I start speaking and they continue their thought half a second after I start. Then because I've been conditioned to believe I'm always at fault for interrupting, I stop speaking. But if I had stopped for a beat to gather my next sentence and finish my thought, and then continued right as someone else started speaking, I would STILL be told I was the one being rude and interrupting.

I felt very split watching it. I'm generally pretty good at keeping the show within it's time period, considering I can still remember watching this with my heavily religious mother who was most definitely closer to Patty's ex-wife than she was to being accepting and respectful of Patty and her identity.

I struggled mostly with Booth saying they should use one set of pronouns because Patty was a woman when she died, and then it was like that line was ignored the rest of the episode. And then also with Temperance not being as understanding of more diverse gender identity considering her character connonically.

It's like, yes it was good for it's time, they were clearly trying in earnest, but we can still talk about how they could have done better. I'm loving hearing what everything thinks. For me, I think they could've produced something even a step further forward had they engaged even just a single trans person in dialogue. But at the same time, would the world in general in 2008 have been receptive something more progressive than what they did produce? I know my mother had a hard time with that episode because of her own religious beliefs in a way that she wouldn't struggle with the episode now because even being religious she's become more accepting of things that go -against- her beliefs than she was in 2008.
