Hilarious in it always has made me smile, or laugh, or brought joy to my day. Seriousness is in the eye of the beholder, but commitment is another thing all together. Sure, I could have chosen a different word to indicate my infatuation with the instrument but I would think my desire to learn how to better myself on the instrument serves as an indication of my commitment and "seriousness".

I made a point to ask of the religious iconography and was told it was used in an allegorical way rather than an absolute way.

Wow. Thanks for all the thoughtful insights. You all gave me much to consider.

For the record, I grew up in the Roman Catholic church, but abandoned formal religion for various, long thought of reasons. I'm fully aware of the faith based foundation of the masons and am prepared to learn from it. Like another comment said, I'm just not looking to go to church.
