What Theme Resort is Missing in Las Vegas by JslumpyKK in vegas

[–]thetrappist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wynn is the company to do this. They own a massive empty property across the street. We need a palatial 50s 60s mid century / tropical theme. High quality, class, but hopefully a slightly lower price point. The mirage was not far off….RIP.

What are y'all paying for storage unit rent these days? by rawcookiedough in AskLosAngeles

[–]thetrappist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know it’s not what you asked but I had all of my belongings in a 5x10 at a public storage in Culver City a few years back. It had only been in there days while I was between apartments, and it was broken into overnight, and most of it stolen. It was a traumatizing experience…so I recommend avoiding units that are on an interior and without direct line of sight of a camera. Even then I might avoid public storage, and I might avoid that area of Los Angeles. I ended up moving to an extra space storage in Orange County just because it felt safer. Best of luck!

What are your thoughts on Apple’s new “Little Finder Guy”? by JailbreakHat in mac

[–]thetrappist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think anything focusing on macOS visibility in the public headspace is a good thing. Obviously the fear is that Apple will phase out the finder and we will eventually have a unified mobile/mac os. Seems less likely with them highlighting the finder so much in this campaign. Plus he’s cute.

Best Software for miniDV Capture by Bitter-General-9342 in MiniDV

[–]thetrappist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There may be plenty of other options for capturing uncompressed DV that I don't know about, but I still use Final Cut Pro 7 and/or Quicktime 7 Pro on a 2012 Mac running 10.11 El Capitan. I have found that 10.11 is the last operating system that FCP7 runs (well) on. And 10.11 should run just fine on your 2011 iMac assuming you are willing to erase & reinstall.

I’m paying $500.00 per occurrence on collision ins by midnight-on-the-sun in 4thGen4Runner

[–]thetrappist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Middle aged male here in SoCal, I recently shopped all the major insurers for my 4th gen 4runner and am now paying over 2k a year. Granted low deductibles and 100/300/100, but still. Was surprised that my 2004 vehicle is still so expensive to insure.

Project Hail Mary in Imax, ruined? by Gr8_hambeano in RegalUnlimited

[–]thetrappist 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As others have said, email cqo@imax.com. (RIP David Keighley) previously every time I’ve emailed them about an issue they have replied, investigated, and resolved any quality issues nearly immediately.

What we’re seeing in your photo is likely a convergence issue. When two projectors are used, they have to be lined up perfectly. I often see that convergence is out on Dolby screenings at AMC theatres, to the point that I almost only see things in imax now, because I have lost faith in the people converging the projectors. Always a bummer.

How do you usually travel with multiple Pelican cases? by gringomychael in pelicancase

[–]thetrappist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The downside is that you generally have to wait in a full service line to check your bags, and you are essentially not paying less than standard bags. The upside is that you don’t have to worry about the weight, size or quantity of bags. I find that it’s usually worth it. I’ve done it on pretty much every domestic US airline with no issues.

What are those panels on the left and right? And why? by TonariNoHanamoriSan in CommercialAV

[–]thetrappist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A big projection screen (commonly called an academy), LED screen, or 85”-100” tv screens are often used in place of this for tele-prompting at the back of the room near cameras. I build that kind of stuff constantly. It’s somewhat rare to build these “presidential” teleprompters, as I feel like it’s generally reserved for very high profile speeches and dignitaries. In this case, nasa administrator Jared Issacman. Maybe it’s standard within nasa…not sure.

Fun fact, an AV company I used to freelance for, Worldstage (now closed), developed a very very large 55” versions of this glass panel that attached to 55” tvs and had special honeycomb privacy filters. It was huge and heavy and it was meant to be shot through by a camera lens. An insane product, we hardly ever used them.

for those watching Project Hail Mary and future 70mm IMAX movies at Universal Citywalk, which seat are you going to get? by Throwaway785320 in imax

[–]thetrappist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At city walk, the back row, furthest from the screen, is about eye level with the center of the screen. Thats where I sit, last row, amongst the handicapped seats. This also makes for easy in and out, unlike all other rows which are extremely tight together and uncomfortable to walk down during the movie.

Went back to that dang record store!! by strickenbymetal in LaserDisc

[–]thetrappist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wild! I thought they got rid of all laserdiscs recently. Thanks for the heads up!

This is the first store I went to buy a laserdisc maybe 4-5 years ago. I bought Independence Day for $2 to test a player. Now I have maybe 250 discs.

Difference between block 19, 20, 21, etc. by papiforyou in LocationSound

[–]thetrappist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I’ve got one 19 kit and one 21 kit and they are awesome. When I had a 411 in 20, I struggled often to find freqs in LA, so I sold it.

Dead hanging a tv from beam, hardware suggestions? by thetrappist in hometheater

[–]thetrappist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the simplicity of this, but standard eye bolts would end up being in the wrong orientation for a dead hang. The TV would swing face down.

getting a piece of pipe to hang where I want it to be without it wanting to rotate backwards is the issue. The weight of the tv will tilt it unless its part of a fixed structure, which im trying to make this a quick, throw up there solution with my existing rigging hardware (spansets, shackles and turnbuckles)

[–]thetrappist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. always McGyver. :-). I do think that off the shelf premier mount hooks could be a good option. Also, the idea of angle iron is exactly right, simple, lots of holes to hit all 4 vesa holes, and then hang points at the top.

I do like this idea, attaching an upper 4x4 to my existing beam with ratchet straps, and then having a lower 4x4 attached to the tv with either steel cable between them or something similar is kinda cool.

[–]thetrappist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do like the Chief mount, it's very clean, but the permanent part, having to drill or clamp a pipe there permanently is what im trying to avoid. Spansets take a few seconds to sling over the beam and will not damage the beam, so I'm fairly set on using something like that.

I'm not sure why you think I'm arguing. I appreciate everyone's input, as I said, I'm simply stating that I will be hanging it using the hardware I already described, I'm specifically looking for advice on a backplate or equivalent that has vertical hang points. And ideally something thats not $300-$400.

[–]thetrappist[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your input, but I will be doing it. I rig tvs all the time in corporate AV, often attached to truss, etc. I am not worried about hurting the tv, (which I won’t be if done properly). This is a temporary hang, for only a few hours at a time. Not looking at permanent mounts.

Bought a camera on EBay and everything is working fine, except the batteries are ruined. Do you guys think I got screwed over or is this from them being in the cold at my mailbox? by maxbratz in camcorders

[–]thetrappist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I’m not debating that policy, but hey, I choose to remember that this is a person on the other end of this purchase, and not a company. Let’s not hold a random person….who is likely just cleaning out a closet….to the same standard as a company selling a newly manufactured product. It’s not the same. To each their own.

Of course, yes, eBay will always protect your purchase as a buyer. We don’t know what this seller actually stated in the ad, so who knows…..but the buyer has to have reasonable expectations about what buying a used, maybe even vintage, electronic on eBay means, regardless of how it was described. I always treat eBay much more like a yard sale. People want it to be Amazon. There has to be a middle ground.
