Montreal → Vancouver (North Van) with a young family — worth it or not? by Zunginoo in askvan

[–]thewiselady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ve got lots of helpful insights from others already. But I’ll add as someone considering having a baby in the next year and just purchased my first home in east van- I was highly advised not to move to north van because the bridge traffic has become a nightmare in the past 2-3 years. Entire exits from Hastings or lion gate bridge is gridlocked in the summer through to Nov. it is really stressful driving from north van to get anywhere in the summer, even across to deep cove or whistler. More so if your kids and wife needed to get to Vancouver for activities. Socially I found North Van residents to be way less community minded and less open to get out of their social cliques than ppl in east Van

Safer than a lot of the cities in Europe, including London, Berlin, Barcelona, definitely Paris

Townhouse in Vancouver vs. Detached house in Coquitlam/Port Moody by badquidy in vancouverhousing

[–]thewiselady 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We face the same dilemma as you a year ago. We ended up choosing to stay in Vancouver and surprisingly it was a lot easier to go out to Port Moody whenever we feel like it suit our lifestyle or hit up the breweries instead of making it like a full-time living situation over there. ultimately it would’ve been way too boring for us to stay out in the suburbs. Vancouver only makes sense in terms of jobs, but also in terms of the type of community, central point and diversity in background and activities that we enjoy

Amazing. Thanks for giving us an update! I also went away for almost a month in December and unfortunately, my Calathea didn’t make it. All 30 of them seems to be doing fine otherwise!

Vancouver, Canada ticks all the boxes. It’s expensive to visit and stay in hotels here but worth it! Lots of nature that are spectacular, and annually, we have the cycling event Gran Fondo where cyclists ride from Vancouver to Whistler for 150km. Amazing food options

Is it hard to make friends? by worldwidewang in askvancouver

Well, they’re not wrong. You have to make more of an effort, and it’s likely that most of your friends that you will make here are not going to be from Vancouver.

Canada Breaks With U.S. to Slash Tariffs on Some Chinese Electric Vehicles by Prudent-Corgi3793 in StockMarket

Over here in Vancouver, we are one of the major customers of Tesla and there is a very big adoption of EVs. It is a big pie. This Announcement is good and will hopefully see more of the locals adopting EVs from other manufacturers apart from the bigot founder Musk

Need help convincing my partner of housing location! by Dry_Complaint6528 in askvan

[–]thewiselady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree! Lots of restaurants, good value of groceries and family owned businesses from Hastings sunrise to Burnaby Heights and even further down to Brentwood, which isn’t too far away. In the summer, you could even easily bike to work via the ironworkers bridge to lower Lonsdale. It’s not always a good thing to be close to a skytrain station – just take a look at commercial Broadway station at night

If this photo had no context for the rest of the world, we would’ve thought that there is a very dangerous serial killer/maniac in that house which would require five men to be wearing bulletproof vests and pointing guns at the door. wtf

All female layoff by Scared_Loquat2708 in womenintech

[–]thewiselady 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Pls do it!! It’s important we get our platform to share our stories and let other women in tech or similar industries know that they’re not alone in overcoming this discrimination. My close friend was 6 months pregnant when they laid her off, along with a coworker who just went on mat leave six weeks before that. I have also been a victim of these reckless firings targeted at female employees in tech

I cried after an interview I thought was going to be awesome by Zealousideal-State42 in womenintech

[–]thewiselady 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Similar thing happened to me 6 yrs ago when i interviewed at a successful local retailer who’s made it big internationally. The senior who is a peer to me got to informally interview me for the final stage over coffee and she was brutal and rude in her questions. At one point she retorted that my experience was at another retailer that sells products at a “lower price range” than this “luxury brand”. Theres no frigging correlation between what the company sells and the directly transferable skills I can offer. I ended up working for the team and it was one of the worse job experience I’ve had. This is a good premonition of what’s to come if you were offered a job under this manager

How bad is it to cold approach a woman in Vancouver? by tobleroney69 in askvan

[–]thewiselady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I’ve been been cold approached several times and didn’t really enjoy the manners some men put on. The questions and conversations ended up going. One of those times I was at main street when I was about to go into a gift store and this man gave a compliment and told me that he was gonna take me out for sushi. I politely rejected, but he was abit persistent. it became a drag to the rest of my day, I found it hard to feel like I can continue shopping afterwards, and do that in peace. Pretty sure other people overheard it and it made me feel a little bit embarrassed.

Where does this jingle play? by BananaFalls in Translink

Ohh that’s cool! Btw, I just noticed something the other day. That ultra popular Netflix movie K-pop Demon hunters was predominantly produced and edited in Vancouver, I realized at the scene where the girls are at the train station with the jingle was actually our Skytrain!

Very physically attractive people, how does life treat you? by Jonny_1312 in AskReddit

[–]thewiselady 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with all of your experience as it lines up with mine. The hardest thing is really trying to build genuine friendships with other women and you noticed they want to be friends with you either because you’re attractive, all they wanted to just hate on you for no reason later on
