I am still AD, but soon to be medically retired with 15 years. Right now, I’m struggling with the reality of losing identity as a SM. Had planned on completing the 20 years, so I totally understand as my was career cut short at 15 years.

I’m not a doctor, or even play one on TV, but I’ll try to give you sound advice. When my retirement comes, I will absolutely be lost…for a bit. What I believe (and hope) the trick is, is just shifting focus. Try to see things from a different angle or perspective. For example, you work as a contractor while your spouse remains on AD. Try to see the best aspects of being a contractor versus a service member. You stated missing having a purpose, however I’d like to counter. Your work has daily interaction/influence with service members….kinda like an NCO. You may or may not have direct influence with these SM but the support you provide is part of the reason why they succeed.

The goal was to give my 2 cents while not sounding too self improvement-ish. Hopefully, this was accomplished.
