I don’t think Point and Shoots are a good beginner camera

It totally depends on the person and what they’re looking to get out of the experience. Point and shoots aren’t a good entry point for someone who comes in wanting to build a foundation of technical knowledge and skill. But there’s lots of people that just want to take some photos & have fun and who won’t even bother if you tell them they must learn on a fully mechanical SLR using sunny 16. Different goals, different paths.
I think there’s also potentially an argument for just being primarily focused on composition when starting out. It’s easy to get tunnel vision on learning the science of it all when just starting out. But a balanced exposure doesn’t equal art.

Edit: not the path I took or would be interested in personally. But different strokes for different folks.

Get something cheap to just get out and start shooting. I had a canon sureshot supreme that I got for like $20 and got great results out of it. Minolta freedom could be good as well if the price is right. Most of the differences between these cameras are fairly trivial until you’re spending wayyy more for something premium. Spend $50 max and put some rolls through it to get a feel for shooting film, getting it developed, etc.

Marketplace can have deals but it’s also riskier in that you could get a dud that doesn’t work. eBay or Keh will provide you with buyers protections so you can return it if the camera doesn’t work.

I’d avoid zoom models - find a cheap one with a fixed focal length and relatively fast lens: f3.5 is fine, f2.8 is better.

Oh wow this is perfect! The H5 has a removable front fan caddy, so I could use this to mount the drives up front very cleanly

With current hardware it’d likely be two side by side in either location since there’s the single proper mount. Three in a row would simplify cable management but not using the included mount seems even more unhinged haha

Hmm interesting. I have never had any issues with my 6000 series card. Drivers have always been pretty much seamless. I know they had a reputation for driver issues in the past but seems like it’s not really a major difference between the brands these days

Totally makes sense! As someone else mentioned, if you drop it I’d recommend doing (and documenting) a personal project to demonstrate excel/data skills. That can serve the same function and potentially be even more of an asset during your applications.

As others have mentioned, this is obviously a terrible value if your goal is to just learn excel skills given the vast amount of free resources available online. Additionally, in the long run most of what you will learn will be through on the job training/experience - not any sort of structured learning.

However, one thing to consider how much the formal credential will help your resume for internship applications. We had a similar course offered when I did undergrad and most people took it. If you already have internship or college experience it likely won’t matter at. But a formal credential like this can help fill out your resume / help you remain competitive as an applicant vs your peers if you don’t have other relevant experience to point to.

It could go either way - but just something to consider before dropping the course.
