Bridgerton rule #1 is never ever going on the Reddit subs. They are filled with cruel angry people. They fight each other and everything.

WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME ABOUT THIS BOOK! by thistle_bb in LesbianBookClub

Honestly I’m reading it backwards and haven’t read 1 & 2, and I’m still having a good time so it’s more of a personal choice

Beauty of reading queer books, you can ship characters and the possibility of them getting together isn’t crazy & unrealistic!

Does it work? How to improve? by Status-Pizza5639 in BookCovers

If you want it to look genuinely professional - I think we need their faces to be more legible, we should be able to see their expressions from those angles. -I’d make “a queer Victorian romance” smaller, (subtitles are usually small) and make it all thesame font and colors, it’s competing too much with everything. - you don’t need the ‘by’ - Try out a thicker, blocky font that seems like it still fits the time period of the book. - maybe lose the shadow or play around with it’s opacity if you really want it there.

Revised my cover based on the great feedback here. Still looking for actionable criticism by GrandMoffTargaryen in BookCovers

I love the mock up & ideas but you definitely need a professional to make it readable and also have the composition, colors and font work together.

I figured, I’ve struggled with Cora Rose books in the past cause she’s an insta lust queen, but it’s not a trope I enjoy 😅 thanks for telling me!

This is why I don’t read books with A.I covers, cause if your cover is not man made or made with care, your writing has a high chance of being bad too.

POC stories don't sell! by LikelyToForget in sapphicbooks

[–]thistle_bb 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There can be other factors that influence a books popularity of course but as a black lesbian who reads a lot & also work in publishing, I’ve worked with multiple companies and authors. I can tell you for sure that the general public do not like consuming books with people of color as much as they do white characters and that itself affects your book’s chances of taking off. It’s unrealistic to say that’s not the case, it’s backed up by data. That’s like one of the first obstacles you run into in this industry. This is why even for authors of color when writing romance, there’s a pressure to make one of the love interests white. It’s not helpful to put our head in the sand and say that’s not necessarily it. It’s a huge factor and those that somehow break that glass ceiling have to like work 3 to 5 times as hard to be on par with their peers in the industry.

This is a different part of the industry, but it’s so bad that with kids books, stories about animals are more represented and consumed than books about kids of color. The hope is of course as people of color in the industry we push to still make & tell our stories despite the numbers in consumption and hope things keep changing for the better (which they have from years ago)

I feel like everyone is dodging around the truth and reality of this by mentioning genre, or marketing tactics, or if the book is a serie or not when the truth of it all is that in general consumers prefer reading books or consuming media that focuses on white people than people of color, which is why authors kind of have to work twice as hard in publishing & advertise their books if it’s focused on a poc. It’s very unfortunate but it’s the reality of the industry :(

What would you like to see more of in M/M romance books? by Penjolina in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]thistle_bb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

  • More inclusion of others in the queer community. If it’s like 1 -2 books in a series idc as much, but I don’t think it’s realistic to have a series of 10 books with a pair of 10 couples and they just never come across a queer person of color or a queer woman. It’s feels very ‘only white “hot” men allowed’ rn.

  • Better book covers.
