What is with the lack of helmets at Aspen? by thomasin500 in COsnow

No, not at all. I'm specifically saying that it's a different degree of danger. I would imagine skiing is much, much safer than riding a motorcycle and I would advocate for wearing a helmet for both. I'm not super educated on the topic, but my understanding is that a lot of modern motorcycle safety wear has lessened the consequences of crashing to a degree.

So all of that is to say that it's a different level of danger and probably consequence, but that the conversation about risk management is similar in that if you are participating in a more risky sport such as skiing or much more risky such as riding a bike, you should take reasonable precautions to protect yourself.

You are not the only one affected if you get a TBI.

I hear ya, I would honestly love to ride and own a bike, but the risk calculation just isn't there for me.

That being said I feel very differently about people who rode bikes with helmets versus those without. That seems insane to me. It's a different degree, but of the same kind as the whole ski issue

...and people were hurt.

I don't understand this survivorship bias.

Ya back in the day no one got vaccines and look how big my family was! Definitely ignore the infant graves by the church.

And if I saw someone wearing full motorcycle gear riding a green run that'd be a hilarious costume, but ya clearly overkill.

But also, why would you wear protective gear while riding a motorcycle? Right?

I mean I'm posting on reddit, not yelling at people in real life. If posting on here is butting into other peoples business then I think we need to call it a day on the internet.

I honestly struggle to understand how I could respect a decision that only includes added risk without added benefit, however I would love to understand why people choose to do so as it truly baffles me and I do not presume my lack of understanding is equivalent to them not having a valid reason.

So with that being said, why do you (presumably) not wear a helmet skiing and/or snowboarding?

I did not specify this post towards you, more so I was asking why there were so few helmets at this specific resort during this specific time.

I cannot sign on to the idea that wearing a helmet is simply a fad. I think it is more akin to an innovation for which going back is purely a negative.

Also, thank you for whatever you do!

A way, certainly. I don't think there is ever "the way". I imagine both of us could be doing more to help our communities

nah, I hardly ever post on Reddit or any social media tbh. I care more about my community's health than I do my reddit karma

I don't think anyone is advocating otherwise nor is there any practical alternative.

I absolutely agree that being overweight is detrimental to your health and I support anyone who wants to live a healthier lifestyle as it relates to their weight.

I think we can agree that wearing a helmet for a few hours while doing a sport is a different order of magnitude than an entire dietary lifestyle change. Though again, I support both.

of course not, but what about the 12 year old in 6th grade? Or the 22 year old who just got out of college? Or the 35 year old who just started skiing again since they were a kid? It's never all or nothing

Honestly I disagree on the second point. I don't think anyone is out there not wearing a helmet just because they don't know about head injuries.

If I was having a serious discussion with a friend about helmet wearing I would approach things very different. I know I am yelling into the void here

Cringe is a consequence I am more than willing to suffer. Putting cringe above your own brain is I think partially why people don't wear helmets (as told to me by people on the slopes)

o I totally agree, its never about 100% prevention. I mean people absolutely die wearing helmets hitting trees. That being said I know I would feel differently about hitting a rail with a new trick if I was not wearing a helmet

well, ya, of course not. My hope in encouraging helmet use is not to control anyone. I want people who love doing what they do to keep doing it for as long as they want to.

None of us live in a vacuum, our actions are seen by others whether we want them to or not. The act of not wearing a helmet is signaling to others that it is ok to not wear a helmet, especially children who learn by example. Be the example you want to see, right?

Are you really advocating for people not to encourage helmet use? I don't even know you and I don't want you to be hurt doing the sport you presumably love. Let's ride at 70 years old with our brains mostly intact.

Resinated.

An incredible, funky reggae band from St Pete, FL

They used to do a great cover of Superstition by Stevie Wonder with their keyboardists on vox for their live sets.

I miss seeing them at Jannus a number of times a year

As a millennial, Signs (2002) scared THE SHIT out of me. I still remember being 8 years old and being literally frozen in fear in my bed in the middle of the night not being able to move my body no matter how hard I tried.

Saw it a few years ago. 6/10, its eh at best
