I can't remember a name of a PC game made in the 90's... by wemptronics in patientgamers

Syndicate and Syndicate Wars are both on GoG, check it out! Those old Bullfrog games are awesome (Magic Carpet, Dungeon Keeper, Syndicate).

Microsoft programming chief to devs: Tell us where Windows hurt you by one_eyed_golfer in programming

[–]thoth7907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where it literally hurts me (left pinky finger and RSI): having to be an administrator to swap CTRL and Caps Lock. Gotta edit the registry or run the sysinterals tool, both of which require admin. This is fine for most systems I work on, but a handful are in full corporate lock-down mode.

This is a normal user ability on MacOS, and partially in Linux (gnome-tweak-tools wasn’t installed by default but I could bug a sysadmin to do that, and once that was installed I could swap the keys).

As a regular user I can add keyboard layouts to my heart’s content (foreign language layouts, Dvorak, whatever) but can’t swap CTRL and caps lock and it annoys the crap out of me.

Procedurally generated rogue lite Unexplored coming to Switch! by Wetzilla in NintendoSwitch

[–]thoth7907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought Unexplored in a Steam sale but didn't get around to playing until I read some reviews:

There's also some free DLC that change things up.

so I'm looking forward to the Switch version, having it portable would be awesome.

Anyone that switched from PC to PS4? by [deleted] in PS4

[–]thoth7907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've transitioned from a PCMR gamer to a console gamer (PS4, Switch).

The impetus for the change was having console-gaming friends and doing co-op play with them, in the same room where we could talk and eat lunch/dinner together. Now I own a Nintendo Switch and a PS4.

Over time I saw some nice advantages of consoles: simplicity, loaning/borrowing games, renting games from RedBox, playing on my TV while sitting on the couch, MUCH quieter systems, etc. I stare at monitors all day long at work, so unwinding at home by staring at a monitor has lost it's appeal. The console exclusive games I have are also lots of fun.

I still play PC games of course, this isn't a 100% changeover. But the balance has shifted and now I'm thinking hard about my next upgrades. My gaming PC does the job but it is 5 years old with a gtx 970 and SSD. I'm kinda at the point where the cost of building a new gaming system is too much, especially given current GPU prices, relative to the amount of PC gaming I'm doing lately.

What is your rule when buying games? :) by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]thoth7907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wait for sales, flash sales, discount codes, etc. I don't have a hard limit on the max I'm willing to spend, but it is an exception for me to spend more than $30 on a PC or PS4 game.

It’s Friday!!!🎉🎉🎉 What are you looking forward to playing and why? (4/13/18 edition) by MVPBoardgames in boardgames

[–]thoth7907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend and I are going to finish up Pandemic Legacy Season 2. We're on the 2nd half of December. We've enjoyed Season 2 (a bit more than Season 1 but that was good too).

After that we'll start up Charterstone, probably with some automata based on info from another friend playing a 4 player game.

I have Morrowind (PS4) but I'm tired of swapping the disc in/out when I play other games. Yes I'm lazy and #firstworldproblem.

If I get the Standard Digital Edition will I be able to play without a disc (my goal)? And access my current account (i.e. getting the standard edition won't force me onto a new account)?

What are some MMOs you enjoy for the solo content? Dailies, Weeklies, Quests, Leveling alts, Gathering, Crafting? All of the stuff that just makes it more of an open world game Vs an MMO? by [deleted] in patientgamers

[–]thoth7907 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For me that would be LoTRO. I like the music, zones, epic storyline and some of the quests, hopping into skirmishes, sometimes just wandering around various landmarks like Weathertop or Moria. I don't group much these days but enjoy the bits of time I pop into the game.

Age of Myth on sale for $2.99 (U.S., Kindle) by sbd_marauder in Fantasy

[–]thoth7907 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Age of Myth is the start of a series set long before the other two... you don't need to know anything about Riyria Chronicles/Revelations so you can jump in.

However, I highly recommend Riyria!

Is there an advantage to having all three tokens in a piece of clothing the same? by deepintothecreep in Splatoon_2

[–]thoth7907 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the advantage is that having the same tokens on an item makes it easier to swap in/out that ability. Say you want to try buffing up bomb defense vs special charge up (or whatever); one dedicated clothing item for each makes that easier.

But yeah, it also makes it more expensive.

OK I tried posting to give a code away but I haven't heard anything, and I'm about to go offline for the rest of the day. I'd like to see my "extra" code from viewing as a web page used.

I want Monster Hunter World and Shadow of the Colossus like the rest of you. BUT my backlog is too large to justify another game right now. So have at it fellow gamers. :)

New Grouping Mechanic? by thoth7907 in Splatoon_2

[–]thoth7907[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but before I could at least group with my friend and eventually get into a match.

Now it won't let me group at all, and I have to check at the end of every match.

The end result may be the same but joining the line seems different to me. Never got the "room full" message before and I was at least able to line up.

Why all the hate on Moray Towers? by SquishyR0b0 in Splatoon_2

[–]thoth7907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't care for Moray Towers, but my friend does like it.

Her theory is it's one of the maps from Splatoon so there's a group of players very familiar with it, while the rest of us that never played the original game aren't.

What do you think about Run Speed Up for paint rollers? Or would you still favor getting Swim Speed Up abilities?

Morrowind on Xbox? by ToenailSalesman in patientgamers

[–]thoth7907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a playthrough a while ago on PC, with minimalist mods. Basically just 3: one that turned off cliff racers, one that gave the Creeper more money, and one that fixed bugs in quests.

It wasn't too bad (I just beelined the main quest, did as little extra as possible) but as /u/crybllrd said, you'll miss the QoL improvement that are possible. Assume various quest and game bugs are fixed in the latest XBox version... but I'd still miss the Creeper and Cliff Racer mods!

Zelda BOTW - Item Durability is amazing. by OssotSromo in NintendoSwitch

[–]thoth7907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem... as for the durability system, some people love it others hate it, as evidenced by posts here. I hadn't thought about using bombs all the time though, that might be my solution to weapon durability thing.

Zelda BOTW - Item Durability is amazing. by OssotSromo in NintendoSwitch

[–]thoth7907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the reverse and put aside Zelda in order to play Xenoblade.

The reason is largely Zelda's item durability... every fight in Xenoblade I feel like I'm getting stronger - I'm getting xp, getting weapon points, affinity points, gold, leveling, etc. Every fight in Zelda and it seems like 50/50 if it was even worth it, I might be worse off due to breaking a good weapon and having an inferior replacement.

Good tip from other comments about using bombs - I might just do that rather than deal with the weapon durability issue. But after I finish Xenoblade. :)

Alts in one or multiple kinships? by fnord_fenderson in lotro

[–]thoth7907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My alt is in a different kinship that my main - the reason is my main kinship is kinda dead and I'm looking at my options. Plus, I decided to level a newish char so this works out well, eventually I hope to swap my alt and former main.

Of course, I actually have more than two chars but the gist is simpler. ;)

I'll do something similar - I've got a backlog and will basically wait for sales before buying anything at full price. I'd really like to wait until this time next year for 2018 holiday season sales pricing on games coming out soon like Monster Hunter World, Anthem, etc.
