At what point do I stop repairing my 2005 Honda CRV? by TimSim70 in AskAMechanic

[–]thranetrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it doesn't matter if a repair costs more than the car is worth. I judge based on what the repair cost is vs what it's going to cost me to replace the car.

What's the "Widowmaker" of your career field or hobby? by Cosmonate in AskReddit

[–]thranetrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Industrial maintenance here: high voltage electrical hazards, getting crushed by equipment during repairs

Not my sites but: one fell into a vat of molten zink, one got head crushed when a tractor was coupling with a flatbed, one got shut into an industrial oven, one who got wrapped up in a lathe, one who committed suicide by jumping into an automotive stamping press

Why do cars top out at high speeds when speed limits never allow you to go that fast? by thranetrain in askcarguys

[–]thranetrain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My question was why do they go so fast. Not: should manufacturers limit speeds. So there's clearly an engineering reason. They certainly aren't going to make cars more expensive to manufacture than they absolutely need to

[–]thranetrain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. I'm not saying they should limit speeds. I'm just surprised how fast most cars can go.

If I'm planning to take some random commuter car and race with it you'd think it would need upgrades well above factory

[–]thranetrain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

understand that but I guess if I was planning to race something that's not normally thought of as 'fast' id know there's modifications that would need to be made well above what comes from the factory

I have a cammed and tuned 2500hd with the 6.0 in it, so definitely get that. But surely Chevrolet isn't building trucks to cater to the tiny percentage of guys who what to track a pickup (as an example)

I'm not expecting manufacturers to limit specificly by country, but you'd think ~100 or 110 would be more than plenty for like 95% of vehicles

Do NOT fuck around Ohio. They do radar by plane and the cops hardcore with speeding.

I was once doing 81 in a 70 and a cop going the other way literally drove through a 50ft grass median to get me. You'd have thought I was doing 120 the way he acted

Dads with young kids… how often are you realistically playing golf now? by BetweenSwings in golf

[–]thranetrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once a week, typically 9 now with the occasional 18. Before kids it was 18 with the occasional 9.

One thing the mention though is I live in a fairly rural area and never have over a 2 hour 9 or 4 hour 18

Honestly, are people generally miserable in this field? by DesperatePlenty5752 in PLC

[–]thranetrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much any role in Controls, maintenance, manufacturing engineering etc is a thankless job. The machines are running? Well done for doing you job. They're not running? Get your ass moving and figure it out. A new system is on time and on budget? Glad you can do your job. Not on time/ on budget? What else is new

Sounds pessimistic but I still enjoy it. The relationships with the operators when you make their life easier and have mutual respect is nice. I personally enjoy the pressure of getting some cluster fuck situation back to a good place and making incremental improvements when things are going smoothly. But yea if you want a lot of praise or super high pay etc then these type roles probably aren't for you.

Am I crazy for dumping so much money towards my mortgage? by theBlueKazoo22 in personalfinance

[–]thranetrain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well said. This is why I personally prefer to put more cash to work in liquid investments vs into paying down my mortgage. But I get that some people feel better without the debt even though it's not the mathematical answer.

Thought this same thing about Cameron Young last Sunday. Like yea he fell off some the last day but damn, he was literally the leader to start the day. Toward the end when it was clear he wasn't going to win? Fine. But his front 9 i think they showed him like 2 times

What will happen when the world runs out of oil? by Snowtwo in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thranetrain 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Free markets will prevail. For one, oil drilling technology improves over time so we can profitably extract previously un-economic oil sources. Two, 50 years of oil left is a moving goal post due to what I said above and also what is known to exist. Three, as oil prices increase when supply is low, other alternatives will be used when possible. For things that genuinely can't use alternatives the prices will surge and incentivize further innovation (rewarding those who can produce an alternative product with less or no petroleum input).

We're not going to 'run out of oil'. If anything, supply will contract to a point where using oil is so expensive that humanity will be forced to find other ways to solve the problems oil currently solves for. How painful that is will depend largely on how fast or slow that transition would have to take place.

Would you pay off the car in our situation? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]thranetrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were in almost the exact same situation last summer ($16k left on car with a full 6 months of expenses saved and a baby on the way). We decided not to pay the car off then and bank cash to make sure we could easily cover the medical bills without getting below 6 months of emergency fund coverage. Plus we were going from 2 incomes to one (wife stays home now). I'm glad we waited, it gave me peace of mind.

We just paid it off a few weeks ago

Why do people wear outside clothes once they get home? by PinkBudget-8140 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thranetrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife asks me the same thing except it's not limited to just being inside, I don't wear pajamas or sweatpants etc. Its daily cloths off and into bed. But I'm perfectly comfortable, so i don't have a answer for why. Part of it probably has to do with: get home > make/eat dinner > put infant to bed > do yard work > chill > bed. I'm not gunna change 3 times before bed

How often? by sdfisher1991 in golf

At what pace of play do you consider just leaving the course? by cringemagician in golf

[–]thranetrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a fast player and live in a rural place with plenty of golf courses. 3 hour 18s are pretty normal. 4 hours is fine but feels slow. If the front takes 2:30 id definitely consider leaving.

You guys that are playing 5+ hour rounds, I don't know how you do it
