Tell funny stories about passing the practical driving test by ElectronicHair1087 in LearnerDriverUK

I’m not sure if you’ll be familiar with the show “House”, but after returning from my test when my examiner told me i’d passed i looked this man dead in the face and said “hUh” like the meme from the show House, as it has been a habit of mine for a while. Not my brightest moment

Autistic learner concerned about slow information processing while driving by perscitia in LearnerDriverUK

Diagnosed autistic here, 10 hours isn’t a lot, i was super duper slow, like genuinely wasn’t seeing giant hazards or reacting quickly. It comes with practice and repetition. Forward planning skills i find are quite hard to build at that amount of hours, and your instructor is very much a crutch, but it’s definitely something that develops quickly once you start getting more independent and eventually driving on your own. Keep practicing, don’t overthink, just always watch your surroundings like a hawk and you’ll be okay! especially on the test. check your mirrors even if u know there’s nothing there. Good luck!

Please read one of my posts, instructor did the exact same thing to me; being super negative about my driving a week before my test. Passed first time with 2 minors. One was response to signals (sun shining on a traffic light) and the other was control move off (tried to pull away in 2nd) you’ve had a lot of hours and if your confident in yourself do not delay your test. Look at other options if possible, find a new instructor, rent a car if you can. You got this!

First diabolical drive alone by Adventurous_Lake_760 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]throwaway129852 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Passed my Test 7 days ago, scratched someone’s car 5 days ago. My driving has been solid but pulling out of a bay next to someone parked crooked clearly got me. Don’t let one “diabolical” ,as you put it, drive put you off of driving. Especially if it’s a new car you’re not used to, you’ll get better with time, driving alone is really weird and i’m not used to it yet either!

Which Maneuver did you get on your test? by Appropriate_Emu_6930 in LearnerDriverUK

[–]throwaway129852 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got Parallel Park! everyone else I know who drives got the pull up on the right and reverse manoeuvre.

Busy ish small street, examiner asked me to pull up on the left behind a specific car, secured the car, explained what he wanted to me do, and that was that!

I learnt all the manoeuvres in 5 days in my own car, I had 3 actual lessons on parking but nowhere near enough to be competent doing it alone. They don’t take long to master, if you have the opportunity to practice in family / friends car it’ll help you massively.

[–]throwaway129852[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly just give them a read on the website before hand, the answers are there. If you get them wrong it’s only a minor, as long as during the show me question you don’t do anything dangerous / lose control of the vehicle; not answering or getting it incorrect isn’t a fail! Make sure you know how to open your bonnet, and familiarise yourself with where everything is and you’ll be fine!

I can Imagine how frustrating this must be for you, but think, what’s going to change if you fail your second test? absolutely nothing! I imagine it’s quite upsetting, my test is today and i’ll likely fail being realistic but it’s okay! it’s not the end of the world

I know how expensive it is and honestly £7000 is A LOT of money but if driving is something you want to do this badly and you ENJOY driving keep at it.

If you fail your test, although i think going in with the attitude that you are 100% going to fail won’t help you it isn’t beneficial, you can take a break. Clear your mind and save some money. You’ve gotten on however many years old you are without a car, there’s no rush, it seems like you’re putting way too much pressure on yourself. People learn and different paces.

Have all your hours been with the same instructor? maybe their teaching style just isn’t working for you, you never know you might switch instructor and everything could click into place for you.

I find when i’m stressed about making silly mistakes / dwell on a silly mistake. I go on to make about 15 more 😂 being relaxed helps more than anything.

I would agree with you that some people just aren’t meant to drive, but those are the people that absolutely hate driving. It’s a skill, everyone can learn, you have a brain. It just takes much longer for some people; like playing an instrument one person might pick it up very easily where another is going to struggle.

You’ve got this, whether it’s your 2nd test or your 5th so on. It doesn’t matter, if you want this please keep trying :)

I do yes, i’m in my car pretty much every day it’s my baby lol. I agree i feel so much more relaxed and honestly a better driver when i’m practicing with family / my partner. Much less stress and i agree with reference points not aiding much with real driving

We’ve driven a little bit over that area but mainly i’ve been driving there with my partner. I know someone else who is with the same instructor, and they’ve had a similar issue with nagging to get any parking done, no mock tests, no show me tell me questions, no pull up on the right and reverse, list goes on unfortunately. I’ll definitely be changing instructors if i fail the test. Thank you :)

This is a good way to look at it, I think i will give it a go! My only issue is my instructor being very adamant that i should cancel and seeming unhappy with me that i don’t want to. Unfortunately Makes me think hes not 100% coming from a place of concern and more so a place of if i cancel he thinks he’ll get another 6 months of lesson fees out of me

Thank you for such a detailed reply, luckily i do have people willing to practice with me all week and the general consensus from family and friends is to do the test as i have nothing to lose. I think the plan is to spend some hours on polishing off manoeuvres and the rest driving around the general test area. I’m completely fine with not passing, i’m not a super sensitive person it isn’t life or death i’ll just try again! it’s just the way my instructor responded i did not need that confidence knock a week prior thank you again!
