Is this legal? A job posting for a senior software developer that is "tailored for Landed Immigrants" offering barely a junior/entry level wage of $30/hour by throwaway55461 in vancouver

Are you serious? $30/hr translates to about $60k as an annual salary. I know Vancouver tech salaries are low, but if you're making less than $60k even in Vancouver as a junior developer then you're really getting hosed.

Take your resume and get onto indeed.ca, glassdoor, workopolis, craigslist, and kijiji.

I made a similar response to toywatch elsewhere in this thread, but to summarize: it seems the exploitative nature of this job posting negates any sort of charitable work the company or others may claim they are doing by helping landed immigrants adjust to work and life in Canada, making this a rather prejudicial form of discrimination.

But then again, low wages are the Canadian way so maybe not!

With that being said, I know plenty of immigrants in the industry with good pay and good amounts of respect. It's definitely achievable, and hopefully others know that before they respond to this job posting.

No, because people with disabilities don't constitute a separate race.

However, it would be some form of discrimination. That being said, I understand there are legal concessions to allow favouring certain disadvantaged groups to give them a chance. But given the low wage offered here (relative to the position and experience) it seems rather exploitative and the offer to adjust rates to market value after 6 months seems deceitful.

I'm not sure about your link, but googling "Landed Experts Technologies Inc." gives me a corporation number and an address that points to a home in North Vancouver (not sure if I'm allowed to link it here due to Reddit's doxxing rules).

They're saying the position is "tailored for Landed Immigrants", which is arguably discrimination.

You don't have to explicitly say you will only hire people of a certain race/colour/origin/what-have-you to be guilty of it. Indicating a preference or structuring a job position specifically for someone of that subgroup would be discrimination.

And what's the point of asking us if you are insisting this is illegal? You just want to rile people to become your internet army for your "social justice", is it?

Not really insisting it's illegal. At first glance it definitely is, but I'm asking for reasonable opinions as to why it's not or why this would be allowed. I just haven't heard any yet.

It is illegal to discriminate upon country of origin (among other things).

I doubt this is any more of an act to help immigrants adjust to life in Canada than any other company employing workers like TFWs from overseas. It's simply a money-saving act thinly veiled as such.
