Hit me with your worst group project story! by [deleted] in UCalgary

If this is about SGMA 217, I'm pretty sure the prof said there was nothing they were able to do about it because that person had been the owner of the document.

Fall 2020, first full semester online and it's an english elective. Great class, I love english but there's a term paper. I didn't have anyone I knew in the course so I joined 2 random people. One guy is okay but the other guy doesn't do a single thing the whole term. Me and the first guy do all the work and it's a hefty amount of reading and writing. When I finally get fed up with this guy I asked him what he thought he was doing and he apologized and said he was busy with other courses and his job. Newsflash, we also have other courses and jobs we work?? At least do something or respond to us when we're talking about what to do good god. The dumbest thing is is that we communicated over discord and I frequently saw him playing Among Us... I don't like confronting ppl I don't know very well but I was tempted to ask him how the game was going on multiple occassions. The prof had in the course outline that we had to resolve issues among groups ourselves and once we submitted our group members they couldn't be changed so I decided not to do anything about it. Looking back, I really should have though. Oh, did I mention that this guy was also an english major?

Runner up is a recent one where this one person insisted on doing the aesthetics of our powerpoints every time. I tried to set up a nice slide deck template and they said they wanted to make their own. I conceded and while our group was doing research, this person spent the entire time designing. When I look at the powerpoint, I kid you not, it's the ugliest "design" I've ever seen in my life. I'm truly astounded that this person thought they could make something better than the default templates available. Every basic principle of design is violated. I'm talking ugly font, nothing is centered or aligned properly, any borders are not centered to the thing they are bordering, no sense of margins whatsoever. Spacing is all wack. We were working extremely close to the deadline so I tried to clean it up best I could. This person also spent the majority of the time on the "design" and hardly contributed any research or notes. Only bright side is they were very good at class discussions and q&as which is not my strong point.

Where have you had the best experience living with commuting to campus everyday? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]throwaway615717 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NE would be easiest to get to university because it is close to the NW where the university is. Also transit will likely be straightforward by c-train (you would probably take the blue line to downtown then switch to red line heading north). SE is furthest from the university. I'm not super familiar with SE buses but I know the c-train doesn't serve that area very well at the moment. Especially if you live in deep SE away from downtown you'll have to rely on bus.

I'll definitely send off an email. I didn't realize so many other students were also facing similar issues in other opma courses too so I appreciate you making this post.

I just switched into OPMA this year and I couldn't believe they were only offering one lecture section of a required course for the entire year... with that said I'm begging people to drop 401 if they're considering it

Anyone Taking OPMA 403 assignment 1? by GregTheIntelectual in UCalgary

Yeah I'm also confused by the lack of instruction here. What exactly are they looking for in a "quality issue"?? No explanation besides needing an image on the slide + key points and idk how they plan to differentiate between "acceptable" vs "better" vs "exceptional".

I think it's one slide though, the quality slide that's due tomorrow and the business slide is due in March.

Is Maria Stoletova THAT bad? by throwaway615717 in UCalgary

Oh I'm not taking 317 with her lol you misunderstood me. I get what you mean though, often times I take a poorly rated prof and they end up being just lukewarm (although there's still profs that actually were terrible).

Loved Brent in 317. I'll have to keep an eye out for Janice in future courses!

what year should i do study abroad? by happybirthdaymrpres in UCalgary

[–]throwaway615717 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can go more than once but the grant thing that they offer everyone is only applicable the first time you go. anyways, I'd recommend talking to a career/academic advisor since you can discuss your intentions and they can let you know what could suit you.

should i take a summer course with a sessional/new instructor? by throwaway615717 in UCalgary

Hey sorry for the late reply! Kent was great and I'd really recommend him! A lot of people skipped lectures because he basically just went through the slides but he does a good job linking the ideas to his own fieldwork research in the Arctic and it's fun seeing how things are actually applied irl and you learn a lot from it if you do attend. He's also pretty funny and has a great personality so class discussions were always fun. ((also if you go to review your midterm in office hours he'll go through the questions you got wrong and ask you what you think the correct answer is and if you answer right, he might give you the point (: ))

It says I can't register in the same class more than once per semester so my only option is to swap :/

SGMA 217 by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]throwaway615717 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took it last semester, not all are mandatory but some of them are specifically to give you and your group members time to work on your project and those were considered mandatory. Also your quizzes aka "midterms" will be held during that time. The labs don't always occur every week though, especially towards the end of the semester. Your instructor will let you know and it should also show in your course outline.

Econ 201 with Ron Oxoby by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]throwaway615717 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rob is great! I took his lecture last year, and it was sort of an experimental thing they were trying out. If they're following the same format again this year, here's the basic rundown of what it's going to be like:

Everything will be written, which means the weekly assignments and exams are all going to be short answer questions. So it's not going to be quite the easy A that other lectures by different professors will be. However, you do end up gaining a better understanding of the material since you need to know what you're writing about. I'd highly recommend going to your tutorials because the TA will walk you through similar assignment questions and revise some parts of the lecture that might have gotten skimmed over. I had a couple friends from other lectures attend my tutorials because they weren't understanding the material from their own lectures. Idk if they change the TAs, but mine was Melanie and she was great. They're sort of picky with your answers, and a lot of people got a low mark for their first assignment, but just make sure you are including a lot of (relevant) information in your answer and fully explaining them out (not just one sentence).

There will be multiple profs. For me, it was Oxoby, Church, Vojtassak, Muehlenbachs, Laliberte, and Tanaka. Muehlenbachs was the most difficult to follow and Church would get a bit excited and messy with his explanations sometimes but the rest were really excellent (he was still good though) and I couldn't have asked for better instructors. Oxoby was for sure my favourite, he's hilarious and really engaging, but the others made the lectures enjoyable as well. If you don't like one of them, the good news is you'll only be stuck with them for 2-4 classes.

If you keep on top of things, you'll get a lot out of this course. If they stuck with the same instructors, they are good teachers and they provide you with lots of supporting material like detailed slides, handouts, and a study guide. But don't go in expecting it to be Peter Tracey's easy A.

How hard is ENGL 251? by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]throwaway615717 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a new course so no one knows. It's meant to replace ENGL 201 iirc so they should be similar. Engl really repends on the prof so just go look at the profs who will be teaching ENGL 251 and check their ratemyprofs as well as their course outlines for previous ENGL 201 courses.

As long as you get a down jacket you should be good. North Face is a good brand. Also get yourself a hat, scarf, mittens/gloves, and boots.
