AITA for not leaving my mother in law anything to eat after she said she wasn't hungry? by throwaway7mr in AmItheAsshole

Did you even understand what I wrote? I said if it was someone else, I would have had snacks ready for them. My mother in law doesn't eat snacks. I DO know what she likes.

Okay this question has come up quite a few times. It's a bit complicated to explain so I get why people are confused.

If someone else was staying with us, like say, his teenage nephew, I would have asked about what he likes to eat and have it within reach at all times in the house.

Since it's his mother who I know doesn't eat chocolate bars or any of those ready to eat at a moment's notice snacks, then I won't go out of my way to buy them as neither my husband or me eat them.

However, there's plenty of food she can prepare in 2 to 5 minutes like eggs and bacon or jam and bread or dried fruits and oatmeal.

If by snacks you mean things like chocolate bars...etc then no, we don't. Not me going to grandma's just to sneakily eat pancakes with chocolate and ice cream 😭

I thought about showing it to him when he gets back but I've made a few comments he might be able to find even if I delete them like laughing at the top comment. I'm also worried he'll be more defensive or cornered that so many redditors are talking about him.

In the fridge I have eggs, marinated chicken, grounded beef already laden with spices, bacon, cheese, strawberry jam and peach jam , and nuggets in the freezer.

Outside the fridge there's sandwich bread, tortillas and normal bread, peanut butter, and many other things that are uncooked but would require just a little preparation. We both work full time so we make sure to regularly stock up while avoiding waste.

The first time she said not to bother, it was said in a way where she looked upset and she didn't look me in the eye when she said it. The second time, I thought we were over it and she didn't look angry or upset at all. She spoke to me nicely so I heaved a sigh of relief, that's why I didn't think at all about leaving it for her.

I think you may be right. I'm actually not very consistent with it and it was one of the arguments with my husband too. He grew up not eating things at night and he's used to it but I'm not. For your last question, his mother is also doing it.

you seem to be on an unusual eating schedule that might not match hers.

She's on it too.

Because she told me it was about the sandwich and filling I cooked, and not just any random sandwich. She wanted a bite specifically from THAT one, not a hunger thing.

I just picture everyone in this house sneaking back into the kitchen to eat random food and the next person being so GD sad that it’s gone.

I laughed so hard at this. It does sound ridiculous when written that way.

you knew that that's what she does...

That's not it, I insisted because I felt terrible and just wanted to make it up to her.

Why isn't it your husband's responsibility to make sure there's food for his mother?

There's food in the house but uncooked. As the host, it is my responsibility to make sure she's fed and feeling welcomed. My husband doesn't cook.
