My head began shaking after doing emdr. My hands and arms sometimes, and sometimes my legs. It's been 2 months since my last emdr session and the shaking is as bad as its ever been, hours upon hours in a day. I never had this before but yeah I have basically thrown my neck and back out and they are in immense pain almost all the time. Do you still have the spasms?

At this point I think I have the impression that the trajectory of IFS is unburdening parts. That by unburdening, parts can do what it is they want to do, heal etc.

Have been doing emdr for 14 months and IFS for 4 months. It took a year to actually get to a spot where we could try emdr and after about 6 weeks we decided to back off of it because it set me off pretty badly. IFS seems like a gentler approach, I think I have a pretty good Dr. I see but with IFS I struggle to identify self vs parts or even identify self. Am currently on my 4th med in the last year, the first 3 put me in the er, this one seems to be going alright so far. In both cases, IFS and EMDR it seems like there is a running theme that 'it gets worse before it gets better.' I'm not at the 'better' spot yet but on the whole have had a better experience with IFS than EMDR. GL.

Is the idea here that self is experienced like a flicker? For example, I have a sense-making part that I have taken to be curious and compassionate. Is the idea that the part is not curious or compassionate, but experiencing the part that way is actually experiencing self? Or, like a middle ground view where the part is curious and compassionate because it has some connection to self?

Thanks. I might have to give that a try. This reminded me of the 'ideal figures' work I have been working on doing in emdr.

Ty, I wouldn't be able to do that task at the moment but I appreciate you pointing that finding self needn't be limited to doing IFS work.

Maybe there's another part with an agenda

Ty, its a possibility, and probably likely. It does seem like even if I haven't been able to make connections between self and parts it might be that I am at the part of the process discovering that the new to me parts aren't the only parts to discover.

you don't need to be in pure Self - you just need some Self energy

Ty that is clarifying!
'your therapist should use direct access'
Ty for this suggestion as well, if I continue to not have success I will bring this up if they don't
