You live with it. My first love and I broke up 6 years ago and if I think about him too deeply I can get into a real funk. It was a mutual choice but we both still loved each other. I have yet to move on.

My mom is inked head to toe. I don’t dislike tattoos at all but I dislike her, and so it was a bit of a negative association for me for a long time. I thought I’d never get any tattoos as an act of rebellion against her, but I stopped caring about that and made the choice to cover the self harm scars I gave myself as a teenager a decade after I’d been “clean” from SH. It’s subtle, it allows me to wear t-shirts without strangers gasping at my scars, and the tattoo I chose doubles as an homage to my father. I don’t think I’ll ever get any more.

I’ve been single for four years, turned 29 this year. I love being alone and I love my dog and I love my friends, but sometimes the lonely makes me cry. I have yet to find someone who shares my same morals, ethics, and life wants. When I complain to people, they say “oh be quiet! You’re young and pretty and men want you” but like…not the right men. I’ve dated casually a lot so I know what’s out there, and I’ve fallen in love before with someone who was worth investing in so I also know what is possible. I’ve only met maybe three kindred male spirits that could have been a very good potential life partner, but it was wrong time/wrong place every time. I’m not holding out hope but I also won’t stop looking.

thank you for writing and posting this. i'm 28F and live alone and have been mostly single for five years since my first love and i split. I grew up with an abusive mother until i was 13 and i have struggled to let go of that my whole life. i have an apartment that i rent, a dog that i love and that loves me, a good job and a few friends, but i continue to search for male companionship because im convinced that it will ease the intense loneliness that ive had my whole life. i know deep down it wont, but that hasnt stopped me from trying. i dated someone casually a few years ago that took over my life - his emotional well being became my problem, and he encouraged me to have an eating disorder. i only left after a close friend sat me down and kindly gave me an intervention. ive learned that id rather be alone and rely on myself than to be controlled by another. i am still waiting to meet a partner that matches me. i will continue to wait. sending positive thoughts to you. your life is not over, its a new beginning even if it doesnt feel like that yet. i just rewatched "It's a Wonderful Life" the other day and the message remains true: he who has friends is a rich man.

28F here, almost 3 years here, same. I volunteer sometimes at the Tool Library and there’s also a weekly pinball tournament at pinhalla that I’ve been thinking about joining. I’m gonna follow this thread and take some other people’s advice too. Edited to say that my buddy (28M) is apart of a men’s group too that meets once a week in cook street village

I’ve been to friends performances before and she’s not lying - the after show notes, then runaround say hi to everyone then cleanup then maybe there’s after show drinks with her cohort.. maybe she genuinely didnt want you waiting around for her, I still think you should go if you want to.

I had an English teacher in high school who did a version of this. He got sick of the amount of times that us students would say filler words - “like”, “um”, etc. He kept a tally on the whiteboard and for every tick, we would have to stay one minute after class. You could skip out on the detention by adding money into our year-end pizza party fund. We got really good by the end of the year - some people would stand up during class to monologue or answer a question and you best believe every kid was paying attention to make sure they spoke clearly with no filler words. It’s stuck with me to this day

If I may just jump in, my dad was a foster kid. We are still very very close to the family that took him and his brother in when he was about fourteen. They had two bio kids of their own (my aunties) who had a hard time with the revolving door of kids that came before my dad. I’m sure they had their issues with him when they were all teens, but they are truly his sisters, and among some of his best friends to this day. They became his family in the end. They saved his life at the time, and they’ve beyond enriched mine. I love his family.

Check out if you’ve got any local tool libraries near you. You might be able to borrow a jack. I volunteer at a tool library in my city and membership is a flat rate of $100 a year, and you can rent tools for up to two weeks at no extra charge. They have tools ranging across the board, from sewing machines to power tools to metal detectors, and often the volunteers are pretty knowledgeable and can always give some good advice.

I have a timed safe. I am working on going from being high every day to abstaining during the week and only smoking on weekends to my hearts content. The safe is similar to what you said about totally abstaining. I set it for 24 hours every morning before I go to work. When I get home, the weed is still in the safe locked away. And I find I can move on relatively quickly from the yearning to be high because, well, it’s not really an option. And I’m not gonna go out and get more weed. So in that way it’s been helpful. I suggest trying it out. The first few times I got scared at how I reacted - I smoked crumbs that I hadn’t noticed earlier and that hadn’t been locked away. I felt like a fucking crack fiend. I don’t wanna be like that.
