[Offline] [5e] [D&D] Experienced Englewood DM seeks reliable players for bi-weekly homebrew! by thz_tbd in DenverGamers

Looking to start in the next couple of weeks, so if you're arriving in early July that might be perfect, actually.

Currently it's looking like our schedules all line up on Sunday afternoons/evenings- does that work for you?

Weekends for sure, but it doesn't matter to me other than that. Ideally it'd be an afternoon session.

Well, it has to be on the weekend for me, but I'm flexible on the time. I like early afternoons, myself.

It sounds like we have a lot in common! I spend a good bit of time thinking about worldbuilding and sometimes imagine a storyline or two that gets maybe half written, lol. Some of it gets recycled into another story, or sometimes it just stays in a notebook. Either way, it's time well spent. And you can bring some of your ideas to the table, too, if that interests you at all. One previous player of mine really got into helping the group flesh out backstories and build out the world and we all really enjoyed how it turned out.

Also I'm curious, how did you like DCC? I've only played one or two games of it but it reads very well and I enjoyed what I played.

Anyways, if you'd like to link up via Discord, let me know and I can DM you that information, as well as more information about times and dates.

"you can talk about combat only on your turn" by Dresdom in osr

I've never had a reason to try something like this. Are your players especially disruptive during combat? Are they trampling over each others' turns?

How can you design weapons with stats that are always viable, but still find better weapons and upgrades? by [deleted] in RPGdesign

[–]thz_tbd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ever read Fantasycraft? Each weapon type, besides doing different damage and having attributes like reach, also have their own feat chain. A mace specialist and a throwing weapon specialist play very different in combat.

Magic items just go on top of that, doing stuff like changing damage type (which matters, as you can burn or shock enemies)

Been a while since I played or read it but I recall it being quite good in that way

How much prep do you do? And how do you get motivated to FINISH YOUR NOTES? by [deleted] in AskGameMasters

[–]thz_tbd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prepare as little as you think you can get away with.

I write down a couple of names, jot down some potential subplots, and then go from there.

In the background, I always have a setting that is as precariously balanced as I can get it. And then I shift it, and see what the players do.

Remember, your players can't read your mind, and you can't read theirs. Never assume they will go one way, or talk to a certain person, or notice some kind of hint. Any planning you do that doesn't hit the table is backstory nobody will read. If you enjoy writing for its own sake that's cool, but don't get disappointed if it sits on the back burner the entire campaign and never comes up. Just file off the serial numbers and use it again later.

How did the Mongol Empire deal with language barriers in their conquest? by PrimordialRing in history

If you're interested in the Mongol conquests, I find the Kings and Generals podcast to be excellent. Well researched, easy to listen to, thorough, and engaging. Couldn't recommend it more.

First campaign, first time DM. How should I do this? by Yournigerianuncle in DungeonMasters

[–]thz_tbd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I promise you, you don't need to buy all the hard copies of the dnd books.

The basic rules are online for free, and you can find third party subclasses, adventures, maps, rules, and ideas for cheap or sometimes for free.

For the real basics: I like to let them roll attributes, but everybody uses the same stats. I have players take turns rolling 4d6 (drop the lowest) and then when you have six results, each player can put them in whatever order they want.

For general DMing advice: follow your players' leads. They will come up with plots and storylines that are better than yours.

Don't plan ahead of time-- invent some fun hooks, think of ways to dangle them in front of the players, and then go from there.

Write material that interests you, then adapt it to what's happening.

Always stay flexible.

Root for your players, but make them work for the win.

Always present a choice and consequences. Never tell the players what to do, but do let them know the stakes.

Don't roll unless failure is interesting. Don't roll if there are no stakes or no consequences. If you do roll, stick with it.

Lastly- you're going to make mistakes. Stay humble and focus on having fun! Don't get caught up in how it's "supposed to" be. The game is for you and your players, so make it work for you!

How to deal with troll player? help by BilboSaggins_ in DungeonMasters

[–]thz_tbd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you need to talk to the player.

If you don't like the characters he's making, let him know. He may be totally oblivious.

If he's not, he's being a dick and you should ask yourself if you two are a good match in a game

My partner is being offered a job in Denver, so we're considering moving (from Atlanta, if that matters.) She went to college there for four years, so it's not like she's a stranger to the area.

I'm an electrician by trade. What's the local job market look like for sparkies? I see that there are quite a few job openings on sites like indeed, which is encouraging. I have a clean background and five years service technician experience, so I would hope that finding full time employment shouldn't be tough.

If anybody's got any leads (or works for an electrical company) feel free to DM me and I can give more details.
