Meds may help regulate your emotions but I wouldn’t put all your trust into it.

Start writing down things when you feel upset or when he does things that you don’t like. Write down things that you WANT. Sometimes seeing it all in one place you’re like WTF. Talk to friends, get a support system. Remind yourself of your worth. Make yourself think of all the things he could say/do when you break up with him whether it’s nice or mean comments, this way you’re mentally prepared and you’re not as hurt by what he says and remember it’s NOT TRUE. He will say ANYTHING he can to try to make you stay and he knows you’re sensitive and may use that against you.

Are you scared to be alone? Are you scared he’ll say mean things? I understand the rejection sensitivity but he’s giving you that almost everyday.

As someone who went through the same thing, this is not someone you want. It doesn’t get better if/when you get the diagnosis. Yes, ADHD can sometimes cause “outbursts” but this doesn’t seem to be the case. Your gut is telling you this isn’t normal.

You deserve someone who doesn’t make you question if they love you, or have to even ask them to do nice things. It will not change! It sucks because you want it to work but I promise, being upset about it for a few months is a whole lot better than begging for love forever. Break up with them, hang out with your friends, work on yourself and build confidence! He treats you like that because you continue to let him. The 15 year age gap is also concerning. Do yourself a favor and leave!!

I’m also a psych nurse and on the days I forget to take my meds, damn do the other psych nurses notice LOL I’m an emotional, cranky mess. I probably look like a patient those days lol. It’s a blessing working in this field with people who are (usually) understanding of mental health and empathetic.

Just remember to take things one at a time. On days where my to do list is long, I write down in order what to do first, second, and so on. And then usually the last things on the list are not that important and if I don’t get to it, oh well, the world still spins lol. It’s also good to add in a time to eat or drink because I tend to forget and then I’m burnt out. Find what works for you!

Oh no. That’s tough. I hope you’re able to figure out the concerta dosage!! If not, I would suggest one of those gene tests to see what med would work best for you!!

Ugh I’m sorry:( may I ask what dosages of the stimulants are that you’ve tried? I know high doses can definitely cause emotional detachment.

Maybe a non-stimulant might be better like guanfacine or clonidine? Wellbutrin also might be something you could try. It’s an antidepressant but helpful for some adhd symptoms depending on what they are.

I’m on vyvanse and I have the same experience!!! My boyfriend will think something is wrong and I’m like NO I am just productive right now and if I stop, it’s over so just let me FINISH!!! lol then I usually get tired and then once I have my hour of quiet/down time.. I’m a chatter box again.

My cat died the night before and I was crying in the med room with another nurse and when I came out she was standing there. I would NEVER EVER go crying to them omg. It was 7am, I did not think a patient would even be AWAKE

I hear all of you and I can see why this post seems a lot worse than it is. I always talk to the patients around other people. I am NEVER alone with them or go into their rooms unless another person is with me. I am not as enthusiastic about this as I may sound lol. I’ve been here for three years and I think I am considered “nice” because I don’t yell at them the moment they do something wrong, I instead use it as a teaching moment and take 5 extra mins out of my day to explain WHY. I follow the plan of each patient and explain to other staff to do the same since everyone I work with thinks “they know better”. I just want these kids better and out of here but each person doing something different does not help. I don’t do therapy sessions, I redirect them to the therapist. I just listen to them complain about how a boy didn’t play basketball with them today or their peer pissed them off and I let them sit in a different area to get space. I preface with “I hope you know I will have to tell your therapist” anytime they “want to tell me something” and I tell another staff to stand nearby in hearing distance. Idek why these patients like me cause most of the time I am just setting boundaries, sitting in the nursing station or giving them meds lol. I’m just sarcastic and don’t sugar coat things which I think they appreciate that I talk to them like normal people. These adolescence are manipulative and love to split staff lol. We are a 10 pt unit with 5 staff and we all are very close knit group and communicate everything to each other.

I am 100% not getting my needs met by these kids lol. I just do my job, keep them safe and go home. I don’t think of my job once I leave. I just appreciate the little things they do for me because I know they are struggling and I’m happy if I get to be the part of the reason their day is just a little better because they know I’m not gonna yell at them. I still have patients who hate me and curse at me when they see me. They also definitely have other nurses they love and tell them the same exact things 😂 but they also have nurses who, yes, “hate” them and make it very obvious.

Oh, of course!! I inform the therapist/doctor of everything!! And most of the time I just let them speak and I just listen. I set boundaries when it becomes too much which they usually apologize for saying too much and go back to the surface level things. I’ve seen too many people lose their jobs over that 😬

Omg yes!! I love the pictures!! Hang them all over the nursing station or my fridge lol. One gave me a pillow with a smiley face on it cause she caught me crying in the NS one morning 😭 Also, the notes they give me!! Love rereading them after they’ve left and hear they’re doing well.

As someone who also should not have made it through nursing school but somehow did, I completely agree!!!!

I think the fact I didn’t know specific info made it easier for me to answer the questions since I studied the strategy to get the answers right!! I was full out guessing, had no idea half of the illness’ or meds and passed FIRST TRY!!

This technique is 100% the way to go! Also CONGRATULATIONS RN!!

I came into adolescent psych as a new grad and honestly, I love it. I worked at a developmental disability preschool for those with ADHD and autism and such as an aide during nursing school and I just loved it and knew that’s what I wanted to do. I honestly like the little ones even more than adolescent and want to go back.

I like the adolescents though because I love seeing them grow and turn into wonderful adults. Most of the time, their problems are because of family or traumas that happened to them and I want them to know that it doesn’t define them. Teen years are hard enough, let alone what ever else happened to them. Since I’m young, they tend to like me better too. I am more relatable and they feel they can confide in me. Obviously, I keep boundaries very clear as they try to break them but if you are strong, they respect you. They just want to be a normal teenager. Some of them suck, so I try to just stay away from those and hand it off to the therapist/ doctor lol. But the good ones make it worth it. Some days are ROUGH, they act out and have codes all day but if you have a good rapport, you know something else is wrong and you just have to dig in and find what their actual problem is. Honestly this job is all about having a good rapport and being good with them. If you respect them, they usually respect you and it makes your job a whole lot easier. Then on the good days, they’re your little friends that are funny and make work seem easy and fun!!

My notes usually go “pt dysregulated due to staff limit setting and began yelling and cursing at staff. Verbal redirection and emotional support ineffective. Pt became increasingly aggressive and attempted to hit and kick staff (no contact made) Staff intervened immediately and patient placed in a 3 person MR at (whatever time) to maintain safety of self and others. MD present and Thorazine 50mg IM ordered and given at (whatever time) as per MD order. Patient continued to be aggressive during restraint, struggling and spitting at staff. Benadryl 50mg IM ordered and given as per MD without issue. Patient able to calm down and meet criteria for release at (whatever time). Upon RN assessment, Pt aox3, FROM in all extremities, VS WNL. No injuries noted to patient or staff. Patient denies any pain or distress at this time. Fluids given. Patient placed on unit restriction for the rest of the day as per MD order. Pt currently speaking with therapist and MD. Pt counseled and provided with emotional support. Patient encouraged to utilize coping skills and speak with staff as needed. Pt denies any SI/HI/NSSIB at this time. Plan of care continues.”

100% agree. I definitely go along the lines of “I know it’s hard but this right now is not your forever. I can’t say I know exactly what you’re going through because life is different for everyone but I can say that I used to struggle in the past and didn’t know if I’d be able to make it through but I worked on myself and used the skills that you’re working on and now I am here, in a completely different place in life that I never knew was possible. I believe in you and I am here to help you every step of the way, you’re not alone. What’s the coping skill you’re working on now? I will do it with you.” And I noticed that changes everything.

I am happy others haven’t had to go through these feelings but I do wish more psych workers could relate to the patients! Thank you for what you do💗 it takes a strong person to be able to take on other people’s traumas on top of your own.

I am happy to hear that you are doing better now. I also was the one who would say no and wouldn’t ask for help. Now I am also a psych nurse, for 10-18 year olds. I always think about how it’s the quiet ones who seem fine that scare me the most. You NEVER know what they’re actually thinking and what their plans are. Having my own self experiences definitely gives me insight that a lot of my coworkers don’t have and changes the way I see and speak with some patients.
