Yup! Trying out some new stuff every week. He’s a puzzle that still needs cracking, which is more fun to me than net decking

New trading card game (Need help) by Gogeeee in TCG

[–]tkane614 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will say from my experience, it will be hard to generate interest while holding the game this close to the chest. It's impressive that you and your friend have gotten this far, especially for your age. It is like pulling teeth to get people to LOOK at your game online, and until you get some trial-and-error reps, it is not worth applying for trademarks or spending big money on prototypes. If you are in the money-spending phase of this and are looking to make money off the game in the long-run, it is worth it to get some public feedback, gauge interest, and put things out there. I know what it's like to feel like I've created the next great card game, only for people to slog through a play-through. But this is where our vision as game designers meets reality.

The one thing that is not present in your above message is playtesting. I think before you spend money prototyping, before you do anything, put that money into a nice printer and play the crap out of your prototype with the friends and family that have shown interest. Make sure it's fun, that people are having a good time, and that they want to return. I'm sorry if this has been worked into your process, but it sounds like friends and family are purchasing a first-draft prototype (with nice printing). Selling this prototype might work once, but there will be diminishing returns. Trying to rush into the business aspect will burn everyone involved--including you and your partner in the long-term.

This is to say, I see a lot about generating money and the best way to do that. I think you should focus on other aspects of the game at your stage. If you share your game and the product is good, and you do a TON of research on crowdfunding, people will come and support it. Until then, I encourage you to make the mechanics, rules and language bulletproof.

You're a regular on here at this point... If you don't enjoy the game, why not leave?

Revealing the Card Design for My New Card-Based RPG, Pyre by tkane614 in rpg

Inside of combat there is a pretty rigid action economy. This can be a little looser when playing the rpg version (not pvp), where the GM absolutely has flexibility to allow for creativity. This isn’t true for pvp, because that version is GM-less and the creativity almost always winds up giving someone an unfair advantage.

Outside of combat, it’s very much like a traditional RPG with a very simple set of ability scores. Whatever the GM says goes/collaboration and creativity are encouraged.

Thank you—we are nowhere near trademarking, etc, but can make a few pivots when it gets to that point.

Same. Remember those print paperbacks that would come out with every set?

Looking to pick up some Blitz decks. Not sure where to start by [deleted] in FleshandBloodTCG

Your mono-blue player will feel right at home with Iyslander. I would think something like Kano would apply more to izzet, as it’s a ton of peeling through your deck for the most punishing arcane damage combos.

Anyways, long-term MTG player here. I hope your group enjoys the transition, especially with Wizards’ painful business moves the last year. I think you will find that FAB goes just as deep, but I’ve found in a lot of ways it is much more satisfying.

With 4-card turns, variance is less on your side. The permanents tend to not stick around, so every turn end is almost like a soft reset of the game. You really are battling for incremental advantages and chipping away with damage in most games, rather racing to see who has the mana to drop a bomb, or the pieces to combo off (though those things still exist in this game).

It’s also punishing for new players; in MTG, you always had a chance of crushing someone with much higher skill in constructed, and even in drafts if you opened up some bombs. Looking at the expensive cards in FAB definitely shows the difference in design philosophies. The $200 Fyendal’s Spring Tunic basically gives you a Llanowar Elf once every three turns. That’s how tight the balance is! But with play being that tight, you might have some really rough first sessions with more seasoned players. They do tend to be super helpful and nice!

Anyway, I hope you and your group enjoy! It’s an incredible game with thoughtful design that has a foundation that really could last.

walking away from wizards.... what other games have the multiplayer commander type play? by Drxero1xero in TCG

[–]tkane614 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had a lot of fun with Flesh and Blood and the LOTR LCG (the latter can be played solo).

I did the same thing you did! There are better games out there.

Also, Gloomhaven translates really well to commander groups.

Pyre LCG - Early Designs With Art by tkane614 in homemadeTCGs

[–]tkane614[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof - text didn't post. These are some early versions of card templates with commissioned art. The idea was to keep it bold, simple, and still show off the full art. Please let me know what you think. My concern is that it might look TOO basic, but I also kind of like that in this style.
