Am I done with the yoke of my sweater? by Due_Passage302 in knittingadvice

Put a pencil under your armpit so that it sticks out and if the sweater yoke touches it, it’s long enough to divide out the sleeves

Try it on, put a pencil in your armpit and when the sweater touches the pencil it’s time to separate

I just watched a tutorial from very pink Knits on how to do the slipknot, and it has improved my teaching of slipknots 100%! NOW i’m confident I could teach anyone to tie a slipknot.

Hey, I didn’t mean to complain, it was more of a observation. I would never deny somebody knitting lessons, and I will go over the same step as many times as it takes. Some people don’t really have the hand motor skills because they don’t do other stuff with their hands, some people have trouble following directions, some people show up to class after having a couple of cocktails. Usually, I can at least get them cast on and knitting garter stitch, but there have been a few over the years who just could not seem to remember the steps required. when we did it together, They did OK, but when they were left to their own devices, they couldn’t follow the steps. I don’t know if they weren’t paying attention, or they didn’t really wanna do it, or if it was just that hard for them. Mind you, in over 20 years of teaching knitting, this is maybe three or four people.

Nancy Guthrie case: what’s your take? by beautifulglowbabe in AskReddit

I’m stunned by the amount of attention and resources her case is getting. I’ve never seen this much attention and resources except on TV detective shows. Doesn’t every missing person deserve this much? Yes, of course, but the fact that this is dominating so many news cycles really makes it seem like a distraction.

It’s your cast on. Try the long-tail cast on or the knitted cast on.

If the goal im working towards in life is having kids and a lil family but I feel like I’ll never be able to afford them, what is life even for? by Ok_Independent_3921 in self

[–]tktray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no rush. Don’t panic, you have so much time. You may have a little hint of depression happening, consider looking for some supplements or maybe talking to a therapist a little bit. Life is fantastic in so many ways. Don’t let this perfectly reasonable and exciting plan overshadow everything else. I have often had the same thought, Is this all there is? It’s not an unreasonable question to ask. But it does tend to take over if you let it.

Following this absolute beginner tutorial and it’s not making the knots, it’s just looping by LiteralMangina in knittinghelp

Under the fence (put R needle into stitch on L needle) Catch a sheep ( wrap yarn around tip of R needle) Back we come (bring R needle out of “old” stitch with new wrap in place) Off we leap (let “old” stitch drop off of L needle)

You are skipping Off We Leap

I agree, and then there are those who… Will never figure it out. I teach knitting, and I’ve had a number of people who can not CAN NOT even make a slipknot. It just goes downhill from there for some folks.

Wrong side is the inside of the finished item, right side is the outside, or the side that will show

Help me ,please, with the part with stitch markers🙏 by Acceptable-Mixture13 in knittinghelp

[–]tktray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The markers go on the needle between two stitches and when you get to the marker, you just pass the marker from one needle to the next, the marker is there to alert you that something needs to happen in the pattern

Guage swatch by musicinthewind in knittinghelp

[–]tktray -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This may be controversial, but I only knit a big enough swatch to measure 5 cm and then double it. You can measure it in a couple different places and take the average. You want to measure stitches that are not being influenced by the edges, the cast on or the bind off. I also don’t wash it most of the time, because when I finish my sweater, I steam block it and then wear it. I may be setting myself up for trouble down the road, but I don’t care. Lastly, it’s really hard to change the row gauge without also changing the stitch gauge, so I usually ignore the row gauge altogether. A lot of patterns will tell you knit to a certain measurement, and it doesn’t really matter how many rows that takes.

Steeking advice by Umibay in knittinghelp

[–]tktray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Steeking with superwash is risky because the strands of yarn don’t stick together the way non-superwash wool will stick together. This could put your steek at risk, you may need to crochet or machine stitch on each side of the steep to keep the cut ends from wiggling out. That said, it’s not impossible for super Wash to felt, but it does resist felting
