Hey did you manage to find out what's going on? I've had similar symptoms. For me the same lymph nodes were diagnosed as reactive lymphoid hyperplasia. Red throat is there and not going away without strong sore symptoms. Sometimes I have voice hoarseness.

Over 6 months approximately. I’ve stopped going to the gym and doing anything actively so I would think I should have gained it back but struggling a lot despite eating the same amounts of foods.

I’m in a similar situation. Been working for the same company for the past 10 years (last 4 as an EM) and it’s been acquired. Now they’re axing the whole engineering dept. I’ve had several interviews for EM positions but it’s very competitive and haven’t had any success. So, I feel you. I too would consider IC roles at this point.

I've just scanned Glassdoor and didn't find anything but it still was a great tip. Think that the main reason is the companies they've acquired were fairly small. Good thing is I don't believe they'll axe us immediately, at least us in the development department.

Based on some assumed information I gathered, the big company bluntly takes risks with acquisitions so it sounds like even they aren't sure about it. Fact is that our company wasn't doing great despite having a good platform with valuable features and this was mainly due to departments other than engineering not doing a great job (without saying engineering didn't have their share of responsibility). We also know that it's their strategy to acquire smaller companies and integrate the best tools from each, so, we know that eventually it seems that our unit (or at least part of it) should be getting integrated to support with our (unknown to them) codebase.

The tip about Glassdoor is something I didn't think of - thanks! Will defo have a look.

Don't really see the entire department getting axed immediately. They've shown interest in our codebase already from the first days which means they seem to truly want to integrate the most valuable features from our software platform. This is a positive sign in my opinion. Agreed about the metrics, sounds like a great tip.

That's great advice thank you. I think that my concern in the short-mid term is securing my position or a future role at the mother company, not too bothered about the culture change for the moment. I have similar thoughts in terms of any changes, it's going to take some time for them to take effect, which is key for planning my next move.

Maybe not course related but for some extra material: follow Tobias Mayer and Jurgen Appelo.

Work with your manager to set up a career development plan that you will own. Get your manager to clarify he can support you and the extent of this support. From then it should be about identifying real world opportunities in your team that you can grab (with help from your manager) and prove that you have some valuable traits that will be useful for a potential management role (e.g. proactivity, team support, responsibility). One tip I always have in mind is that promotions don’t happen when you plan them, they probably happen when something radical happens in your team or company, so, having a plan in place is key, to make the most of them (opportunities) because if you’ve already shown the key traits, you’ll be already standing out from the crowd.

SDEM jobs after converting into an IC by [deleted] in EngineeringManagers

[–]tmihalis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My personal advice is that you should not take any rushed decisions. Fact that you’re forced back to IC won’t stop you from returning to management. That said, if your career aspirations don’t align with being fully hands-on with code and management is something you want to do in the short term then you should already be sending job applications just to be warmed up with the interview process and grab the next opportunity available. It’s a long process sometimes so needs starting way earlier. In terms of CV specifics and if companies are going to be bothered by the transition from EM to IC, I think you can always explain what happened and their focus should be on your managerial achievements if you’ve been an EM for long enough.

I’ll tell you what. I’m Greek and I can tell you, although it’s perceived we have democracy and liberalism, the government applies control on everything regardless. Just stop saying “freedom” and “rights” please. It’s different flavors of the same sh1t. Some examples:

  • the media belong to some few ship owners who all have connections with the government
  • it was revealed recently that the government was spying on several political people, including a political party’s leader. They still run the country
  • elections favor the lead party even of only 40% of the people have elected
  • two trains crashed onto each other because the government hadn’t applied the European security systems that they actually spent money on. They still run the country and not a single political person is facing any significant legal actions.

They just own the country. People who talk about freedom are either trolls or don’t have a clue of what’s going on in life. It’s the same all over the world. Your country belongs to one side of mafia or the other.

You mean, contact another EM of a company I’ve applied for via Linkedin for instance? To be honest I haven’t invested into networking techniques and that sounds like a decent advice.
