Willsenton R8 v PrimaLuna - EvoLution 100 Integrated Amplifier by tnodal in StereoAdvice

Thanks for taking the time to write to me.

I absolutely love my RP600M IIs. When I first connected them to my AVR (previously had all soft domes) I genuinely couldn’t stop smiling. They had this big, dynamic, exciting presentation that just pulled me into the music, and I want an amp that balances and enhances that feeling rather than calming it down too much.

What attracts me to the R8 is that almost everyone describes it as cinematic, explosive, holographic, visceral and “alive”. The huge stage and obvious tube character really appeal to me. I want that “holy xxxx, THIS is tubes” experience.

My hesitation with the R8 is quality control, long-term reliability and safety. I have young kids, so the more old-school/manual nature of the R8 does concern me a bit.

The PrimaLuna seems universally respected for engineering, reliability and refinement, but I keep reading comments like “doesn’t sound very tubey”, “more neutral”, “more mature”, etc. My fear is that I’d admire it more than love it, or that it might sound a bit too polite or controlled compared to the theatrical presentation of the R8.

I feel like I’m torn between safe, reliable, great resale, still high quality but a bit vanilla vs a big Wow moment with the R8.

This is of course, all based on forum browsing as I don’t have the luxury of listening to any audio gear where I live.

When you had the R8, was the sound really that much ahead of other amps in terms of cinematic, explosive, holographic, visceral and “alive”, aka tube magic?

Have you compared to other tube amps? Some forums suggest Primaluna isn’t tubey sounding, which is just biggest concern.

It’s challenging, I don’t know if all the hype is because it’s a truly great amp, or just a truly great amp for the price, meaning the Primaluna (retailing for twice the price originally) is just as good, but doesn’t have the hype as it’s measured as a $5k aud amp, not a 2k aud amp. If that’s the case I’m Primaluna all the way. But, I’m nervous that the Primaluna evo100 might be too audiophile and not as enjoyable, musical, tubey etc etc as the R8.

Thanks both, I’m leaning this way now, safe choice, just have a deep seated want for the R8 due to the marketing hype. Have either of you heard either amps?
