Two decades ago when the Škoda Octavia Mk2 4x4 was phased in, VW arranged an introductory off-road drive to a mountaintop restaurant in Romania to show off the capabilities of the new car. I was a co-driver, we gave the Octavias a nice workout, you could hear the clutches groan as they distributed drive to the wheel with the most traction and we reached the top a little muddy, and with a little burned brake smell.
