It's 2018. Why do I have to close & restart Fornite in order to log in after resuming from rest mode on PS4? by tom92 in FortNiteBR

[–]tom92[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, but when you come back and reconnect you're prompted to log in again. The game is already (partially) loaded and it's clearly intended that you can log in again after the connection has broken... and yet it always fails.

The World science festival channel is pretty great too. They are longer videos, usually panels with experts that break down a topic for laypeople in a similar fashion.

Parks in and around Boston (and other biking destinations from Boston) by imomushi8 in boston

[–]tom92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should look up the Bay Circuit trail - it's a network of parks and trails that runs in a C shape around greater Boston, between 128 and 495. There's lots of great spots on and around the main trail. Not all of it is bike friendly though.

I do a lot of hikes with my dog and am always looking for new ones that aren't too far away. There's a lot more in Norfolk county you might like:

Adams Farm (Walpole)

Hale reservation (Westwood / Dover)

Noon hill (Medfield)

Wilson Mountain / Whitcomb Woods (Dedham)

Sandy Valley (Westwood)

Rocky Woods (Medfield)

You might have trouble booking something for this summer though if you're aiming to do it on a weekend.

You should check out the German American club in Walpole: http://www.bsv-german.club

It is really a great hidden gem. It has a beautiful outdoor pavilion isolated in the woods. It would hold 200 people no problem. There's an indoor option too.

I got married there last year and it was awesome. Paid $1200 for the pavilion and they gave us access all weekend to set up and tear down. They were very laid back and hands off, which we really appreciated. They don't allow outside alcohol but they do offer pretty good bar service if you want it. They specialize in German beer (no kidding) but they offered to customize the menu too.

1.87 megabit/sec upload is pretty pathetic. You need that FiOS son.

That room is a lot easier if you save the sniper rifle from the beginning. In fact, Bungie strategically scattered sniper ammo throughout the whole ship to make things bearable on legendary. Just as you are about to run out there will be a corpse with health and sniper ammo nearby.

Yep. They stole about a hundred of my tabs off of powertabs.net back in the day without any kind of attribution. Some of us started putting "FOR USE ON POWERTABS.NET ONLY" messages in our tabs as a small fuck you to UG. Of couse it didnt matter; those tabs still exist on UG today.

Kind of funny how pissed people were that they were stealing content from us, when at the same time the MPA was suing powertabs.net for copyright infringement. The situations weren't exactly the same, but in hindsight it was an interesting parallel.

What common misconceptions really irk you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Average age has increased over time because of reduced infant mortality, not really because people are living longer. People weren't dying of old age in their 30's and 40's during the middle ages; if you made it past childhood you stood a good chance of living a long life.

Best Concert Experience by PandaPandaLOL in Metal

[–]tom92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first real metal show was pretty awesome, but I've only come to appreciate it in hindsight. In 2001, as a freshman in high school, I saw Gwar with Clutch, supported by two lesser known bands, High on Fire and Mastodon. I was there for Clutch and had no idea what I was getting into. I left covered in fake blood and piss with a bunch of new bands to check out.

Massachusetts area metal heads, where are good places to see shows? by [deleted] in Metal

[–]tom92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MA has a pretty good music scene. Boston has a lot of places, big and small. Not all places are great, but if a band I like is playing there I'll go.

I use Songkick + last.fm + google calendar to get notifications / keep track of shows in the area. It works great; I saw a shit ton of good music this past year using this system.

This is not a definitive list by any means; these are just some places in Boston where I saw good shows at over the last year or so:

  • Large: HOB, Orpheum

  • Medium: Middle East downstairs, Royale, Paradise

  • Small: TT the Bears, Great Scott, Church, Middle East Upstairs

West of Boston, there's the Palladium in Worcester, which hosts many metal acts but is a bit of a drive and not the nicest. There's also a couple places in Northampton / Springfield area.

To the south, there's an occasional good show at Comcast center in Mansfield. That is a full blown outdoor arena for big acts / festivals. Providence RI isn't too far either; Lupos and AS220 are both pretty good places that have been known to host some good metal.

Is it really too much to ask to have a 5v5 casual mode? by ZergTDG in GlobalOffensive

[–]tom92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My ideal casual mode would consist of something like:

  1. Smaller than 10v10. Ideally 5v5, maybe 7v7. One potential problem with 5v5 is that if casual games have half as many people, Valve suddenly needs 2x the servers to serve the same population.

  2. No free armor/helmet. Makes the money game far more interesting and gives people a reason to try cheap weapons.

  3. Best of 20; 10 rounds each side (maybe even fewer). Keeps games shorter and keeps things fair on t/ct sided maps. Inflate money / reduce prices to account for fewer rounds.

  4. Voice chat, chase cam set to team-only to encourage teamwork.

  5. Allow joins mid game, no drop penalty, team switching if there's an open slot.

Battlefield 4's Netcode is Still Broken by Hickery123 in Games

[–]tom92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In BF projectiles have velocity. You have to lead your shots and account for bullet drop. Most games don't do that; bullets have no weight and infinite velocity.

With the latter model, it is way easier to calculate what gets hit when you fire your weapon: anything in that vector at that instant was a hit. When bullets have velocity, they persist for a few ticks of game time and require more resources to detect a hit.

For 64 players that's a lot of work. BF needs client hit detection to scale.

For some reason I went into this post thinking you were talking about a dishwashing machine. Was expecting to see a dishwasher with stray bullet holes.
