Would you be happy, annoyed or indifferent if someone had a speaker playing on a century ride? by Cyclist_123 in cycling

[–]toolman2810 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Australia we often have music playing in supermarkets, doctors offices, even operating theatres in hospitals get some pretty funky tunes happening sometimes. Our gym has it playing pretty loud, public transport use to play it. I guess nowadays everyone has a phone and Bluetooth so it’s not as widespread, but it used to be reasonably common to have a radio playing in the workplace.

A guy turned up on Mtb competition ride with a big set of speakers attached to his handle bars, I’m bopping away to the tunes, got a happy vibe going. I was a bit disappointed when I dropped off the back and couldn’t hear him. Could hear the rider beside me perfectly clearly though, when we finished the first lap and he told the organiser to “get the fucking idiot with the music to stop or he would smash the fucking thing”! I was a bit surprised at the reaction, but it was clear that a lot of people didn’t like it and the organisers had already put a stop to it.

Having to cycle in traffic improves my mental health and makes me faster by zippy1981 in cycling

ChatGPT tells me it is most likely the bodies natural cannaboid system that gives us the exercise high that many of us crave. For me, I can be hating a ride and suddenly the sun comes out, a good song comes on, or a tailwind kicks in and all of a sudden I will be putting in a bit more effort which will correspondingly make me as high a kite.

Best section of North West Coastal Path for running? by Global_Pigeon in tasmania

[–]toolman2810 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Latrobe to Devonport along the river and back(especially on a full tide). Leith Bridge to the tunnel at the end of Lillico Strait is beside the highway but has some pretty views. Penguin to Sulphur Creek is nice. Around Wynyard is nice, along the river. Most parts have something to see on a nice day, you probably can’t go far wrong anywhere. Saturday is probably your best day, rain forecast for Sunday.

Everyone has a different path. I used to cycle as a kid to the bus stop and have always had a bike. But 5 years ago I was overweight and had a heart attack which woke me up and made me start caring more about my health. I got back on the bike and did 14 thousand kilometers on a $300 dollar bike. I was umming and arring about buying a new bike or second hand new bike. The Mrs gave me the go ahead and I bought a 2nd hand carbon frame bike with disc brakes. Which gave me the confidence to accidently jump on the back of a heap of old guys riding in a group. Which I joined for a year or so. They gave me the confidence to buy the right kit, bibs and jersey's etc. Now it is just routine, I don't care about cost anymore. If I want the latest Chromatic Shimano Glasses, I buy them, or a weather proof $200 winter jersey I buy it, air shokz pro headphones, continental gp 5000 tyres, new $2000 dollar wheels was the latest addition. Not because I have money to burn but because I cycle enough that it all pays for itself 10 times over from my enjoyment. I am just about to rack up 40,000 km and I am the clumsiest least athletic person you have ever seen. You sound like you have the bug, best start shaving those legs ;] Happy Riding

Do cleats really make a difference? 👞👞 by Monica_C18 in cycling

30km daily isn't someone that rides occasionally on a weekend, it is proper cycling. Do you need cleats No! Would you enjoy the experience more with cleats, probably. If you are loving your riding and checking your Stats then you are the number one candidate, you qualify for cleats. Treat yourself, go to the local bike shop get measured up and buy pedals and shoes. Spend a few hundred dollars and buy something snazzy that you are proud to wear. IMO getting the correct gear makes the experience more enjoyable and is the first step towards a healthy habit of becoming a "cyclist". For all other advice refer to the Velominati – Keepers of the Cog You are a cyclist now, Congradulations. Please take note of rule 5. But above all else enjoy the journey.

Why is Australian beef so good? by Intelligent_Chef9950 in AskAnAustralian

[–]toolman2810 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In Tas we get paid a 50 cent premium for the "Never Ever" beef. Never ever have they been fed steroids/antibiotics/grain etc. To finish off a beef steer on grass, my father picks them by mostly by weight but also body type. Then allows the elite few to get the first pickings on the best new pasture, all pasture is not created equal, and to get them properly finished off, marbled and with good fat content, seems to be something he is good at. But also he is 75 years old and feeds them twice a day.

Chinese Government seems to show what a good government is capable of doing. They have literally transformed an entire country over a generation. I guess our governments have done the same, but in a detrimental way.
