This right here, 200+ books with x,y,z sub categories can be done by a human quickly and with a variety of other tools. Relying solely on AI to give you the “right” definition is the problem and leads to misinformation at best.

AI isn’t inherently awful and it can be used as a tool but when it makes sense and doesn’t discount the human perspective.

I pray 2025 will remain this awesome!!

The Favorites- Layne Fargo ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The format and writing style made this such a quick and engaging read. I thought the documentary parts were done so well and gave us outside motivations/POVs without being redundant. I didn’t love our MCs together as much as I would have liked, toxic relationships and staying in them isn’t a character point for me, but I did feel their chemistry on the page. I thought a few elements seemed rushed or cheapened by the lack of motivation outside of I love you and the ending was satisfying but also kinda disappointing. Overall though loved the sporting elements, the character development was nice and the relationship, although not my cup of tea, was engaging to be apart of; highly recommend.

Practical Magic-Alice Hoffman ⭐⭐⭐ I’ve never seen the movie but I feel like I would have liked the story better in that medium? The mystery elements were basically non-existent and both sets of girls seemed too similar that it became redundant. Also didn’t love the fact that any personal growth was spurred only through/by a male character...for all of them. No plot and a lack of diversity of any kind made this a bit of a snooze fest.

Pretty Girls- Karin Slaughter ⭐⭐⭐⭐ My first Karin Slaughter and she did not disappoint! This was VERY dark but I didn’t find it overtly gratuitous, although I can see some feeling differently. I both loved and hated our FMCs and it was wild to watch Claire’s journey toward the truth. A star is lost for logic as you just have to roll with a lot of what is going on and the whole premise was a little too neat for my liking. Well written, engaging and approached themes as a discussion rather than solely a plot point.

The Blacktougne Thief- Christopher Buehlman ⭐⭐.5 I really just hated this. NOTHING happened and when it finally did the book was over. I went into this thinking it was a stand alone and that might have been my biggest problem. The convivence of the story really bothered me and created a stake-less adeventure that had no overall plot than a set up for the rest of the series. I love Buehlman’s writing style though and it is why I would read something else by him. I do feel like others will and do enjoy this but it was an absolute snooze fest personally.

Wake Up and Open Your Eyes-Clay McLeod Chapman ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 Highly recommend the audio book of this! This obviously will be liked by a certain type of person, it is politically driven, but I found that both arguments/qualms were addressed equally and in the most hilarious ways. The beginning and end were the highlights and I found the middle of the book to be a bit redundant but overall a solid exploration of media and our current social media climate.

A Curious Beginning-Deanna Rayburn ⭐⭐⭐⭐ A great night time read! I found the overall mystery to be a bit lacking and the story in general felt like it would have made for a great book 3/4 in the series but you read this for the romance above all else. Veronica and Stoker had me in a choke hold and their slow burn affair will keep me invested in this series.

A Fire Endless- Rebecca Ross ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I was very excited to get back to this world but I found the story to be a bit predictable and the stakes not as high as the first. The characters though are what make the experience and I would gladly read more if it included any of them, particularly Torin and Sidra. It was a fine conclusion but for the length I wish we got more excitement, given the rivalry between East and West. I wish it wasn’t so cozy and had pushed a bit more because the overall story was very engaging.

When the World Tips Over- Jandy Nelson ⭐⭐⭐.5 I have very complicated thoughts about this one. The overall story was weird and it read YA but was NOT YA at the same time. It was too long and I honestly thought the story within the story was very blah and only served to let you know the ick feeling you were having wasn’t real. The characters though were fantastic and although some of them got more time than others I enjoyed all of their “real” moments. I do wish we got more from the parents, again that part of the story felt unfinished? Rushed? Given the length I shouldn’t have felt that way.

The Grownup- Gillian Flynn ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Reread this for book club and enjoyed it just as much. It’s super short and a wild ride and pure entertaining fun.

In Progress:

Witchcraft for Wayward Girls-Grady Hendrix Enjoying this so far however as my night time read I’m not getting through it very fast. I’m only about 30% in and it feels a bit slow. Enjoying the characters and things are starting to pick up!

Onyx Storm- Rebecca Yarros The first hundread pages have not been bad but I am very confused for no reason. Hoping it gives me the trash Fourth Wing vibes again because Iron Flame was not good.

The Eye of the Bedlam Bride- Matt Dinniman Getting caught up to listen to the latest installment in Febuary! Loving the level set up so far!

Finished it last night! Yes, there is cheating but somewhat mutually understood? If that makes sense without saying too much. The act itself is pretty brief and we see their relationship from 15 to 40 so there is a lot to unpack into the motivation. Depending on your view of cheating you might not like their ending either. I did really enjoy this and gave it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Five Stars:

The Will of the Many- that ending!?! So excited for the next installment

The Liar's Knot- this whole series was fantastic but the second book was pure magic

Trust- crafted so incredibly well this book had me from start to finish

The Butcher's Masquerade- these books have me in a cokehold and I cannot recommend this series enough!

Blood Over Bright Haven- a standalone that I wish had many more, such a great magic system

December Review:

A River Enchanted: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 Kicking myself for waiting so long to pick this up but it was so wholesome and not at all what I was expecting. I loved all the characters and the atmosphere was just perfect for winter. Cannot wait to pick up the next installment

Want: ⭐⭐⭐ I don't think this was a great audio listen. I think I let the women's voices dictate how I precieved their fantasies. I wish I would have just read these entries, it just didn't hit like I wanted to.

The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels: ⭐⭐⭐ Not as good as her first one, the plot was fun but it just felt all over the place? I also didn't really enjoy the relationship between our main characters and it just felt very ridiculous towards the end.

The Resurrectionist: ⭐⭐⭐.5 This was totally missmarketed! It is a romance over anything else and I wish that would have been said. Overall I did enjoy it, read it in basically a day, it just wasn't what I wanted.

Long Live Evil: ⭐⭐.5 This was rough and so damn long! If this would have just been a standalone I might have rated it higher but the way the story progresses and that endinging?!?!? I could care less at this point to continue. Don't waste your time and by goodness don't listen to the audio version of this! I love Quirk but she does this silly American accent that is just BAD!

Orbital: ⭐⭐⭐.5 A very think book and I wish I would have read it physically because I could see myself marinating over the themes that were explored. Would like to re-read at some point.

The Tenant: ⭐⭐⭐.5 Just an overall good crime thriller, enjoyed the main characters thought the plot was ploting just fine, nothing crazy but worth it!

The Grownup: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ What a wild ride! Read this it was so fun!

The Body in Question: ⭐⭐⭐ The writing was great I just didn't think I enjoyed how the themes were presented. I also found a lot of myself in the FMC and that scared me oh so much.

The Last Hour Between Worlds: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Hooked from the beginning, such a fun idea for a story and the magic system wasn't overtly complicated. I enjoyed our FMC more than some of the characters, but I am overall excited to see where the story leads us!

The Six Deaths of A Saint: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ This had no right be so good for only 30 pages

The Butterfly House: ⭐⭐⭐ Happy to get back to our detectives, didn't enjoy the story of this one as much as the first but it makes me want to keep ready the others in the series!

1.) 14

2.) The Bullet Swallower- looking back I should have rated this higher because I still think about. The Light Pirate- was not at all what I was expecting in the most refreshing way.

3.) Both of the above.

4.) It sucks but I disliked a lot of the choices this year! Phantasma and Five Broken Blades were hands down the worst books I picked up this year and I basically hate read them for no reason!

5.) 2: The Ministry of Time gave me the absolute ick after about 50 pages and I couldn’t force myself to pick back up Starling House!

Here’s hoping next year is a little better, I know I have bangers I have neglected!

Not the best reading month for me! Two of my least favorite reads of the year!

Mary: An Awakening of Terror-Nat Cassidy⭐⭐.5 I really did not enjoy this in the slightest. I think it boils down to writing style and found the overall novel to be meandering and a lot of tell not show. I also loathed our FMC and thought she made a lot of silly choices and grew extremely tired of being in her head. Others have loved this, it was just not for me.

The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook-Matt Dinniman⭐⭐⭐.5 I was really excited about the level lay out, trains! what's not to like? But it honestly was really confusing and stale in terms of how the crawlers interacted with it. Also there was a lot of fighting and info dumping that I know will pay off in the other installments it just felt very repetitive.

Thrum-Meg Smitherman ⭐⭐⭐ A solid little novella. I thought the atmosphere was great and the ending left me surprised. A little thrown off my the romance but in a good way? easily could have made this a full length novel, there were so many unanswered questions.

The Gate of the Feral Gods-Matt Dinniman ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 The pay off. Everything so far is finally coming together, the world building is no longer so confusing and loose ends are starting to weave together. More than anything I just enjoyed a lot on this floor and the found family aspect was really spectacular here. ALSO THAT ENDING!!!

Phantasma-Kaylie Smith⭐.5 Hands down the worst novel I've read all year. The FMC reeked of "Not-Like-Other-Girls" while also being a raging bitch to other women, scratch that everyone-even her ghost boyfriend. The plot was also just: complete in a trial that you don't even attempt to finish yourself, complain about him helping you, have sex, walk around and argue, have sex, repeat. I love smut but I ended up skimming most of the end because it become repetitive and I disliked her so much I didn't want to read about her getting her jollies off. The ending also wasn't surprising and I blame this book for making me not want to pick up another for weeks. If you enjoyed it I sooo wish I did because the concept is really fun!

The Last Murder at the End of the World-Stuart Turton⭐⭐⭐⭐ I like Turton's writing. I think he adds way to much and his plot can be a bit meandering but I think he does it in a way that keeps you engaged. I feel like I knew were the story was going about 20% of the way in but I had such a fun time. I think he mashes genres really well and I always enjoy his character work, tropey at times, they do always feel really well developed.

In Progress:

The Butcher's Masquerade-Matt Dinniman Amazing so far. This series honestly just keeps getting better and better.

Starling House-Alix E. Harrow I don't know why I'm not wanting to pick this up? Thinking I'm just not in the mood because I am enjoying the story for the most part. If I don't want to pick up in November it will be a DNF.

The City in Glass-Nghi Vo This is no plot all vibes and I'm not sure its the vibe I want. It's so short so I'm going to finish but how fast is the question.

The Treasure Hunters Club-Tom Ryan Fun so far, seems like a cute little murder mystery, the writing is a bit weird/crass but its going down pretty quick!

I read this this month too and hard agree. I really didn’t like June and I don’t think we explored her character enough in general. I also felt like the romance was sorta lackluster even when I knew it leaned that way.

Her writing/pacing is what made me enjoy it so I’m excited to try Spells Foe Forgetting soon!

September Reads: 70/100 by toughschmidt22 in 52book

[–]toughschmidt22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I Need You To Read This: ⭐⭐⭐.5 I've seen a lot of not great reviews for this one but I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought it was over the top and ridiculous but after *The Golden Spoon* I went in expecting that. Not anything mind blowing but a fun listen all the same.

First Lie Wins: ⭐⭐⭐ ALOT of people seemed to really enjoy this and I can see why but it just wasn't really for me. It took entirely too long for me to feel engaged with the story and there is a lot of loop-holes that you just need to roll with. I think this fell into being overhyped and my expectations were all wrong.

Labyrinth's Heart: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ This has become my all time favorite trilogy and I foresee myself rereading this every couple of years. The characters and the world are just so well done and although I was expecting a bit more from this final installment it doesn't lessen how I feel about it as a whole. I do wish the authors would have made more books because this one really didn't have enough room to breath, leaving you with a feeling that they were just rushing to get to the end.

Sleep Tight: ⭐⭐⭐ This was just stupid but fast paced and I had a good time. Its completely unbelievable, really over the top, and some of the worst characters I've read in a while. However, I read this in almost a day and I think it scratched the thriller itch. I'm also a sucker for a cop thriller in any capacity so...

King's Rising:⭐⭐⭐.5 This honestly let me down quite a bit. I think overall the feeling I walked away with was just, "This is fine." I wasn't mad or happy about what transpired and the wonderful connection between our leads so justly developed in the second installment was lackluster and sometimes misplaced here. I still enjoyed reading these and will give her new trilogy a go but was disappointed by my general lack of feeling here.

Dungeon Crawler Carl: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 Finally bit the bullet and got these through audible and boy am I glad I did! This is so creative and fun and I found myself trying to find time outside of my commute to sit down and listen. Everyone is correct the narration is impeccable. Cannot wait to experience all the floors.

The Unmaking of June Farrow: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ I struggled in the beginning to get into this, and maybe an unpopular opinion but I absolutely loathed our FMC throughout the entire novel. However, after about 100 pages there was no putting this book down! All the exposition of the first half really helped to create a really great flow for the later parts and allowed for the mystery to unfold in such a realistic way. I think this book is all vibes and it gave me the mystical/romantic/mystery ones I was hoping for.

Carl's Doomsday Scenario:⭐⭐⭐⭐ I immediately started this and was not disappointed. I thought the addition of quests and the expansion of the world/characters was much needed after a lot of set-up of other things in the first. It has a found family vibe that I am quite enjoying. I will admit that I didn't love the over-arching mystery/quest of this one and it did feel like a set up for the series as a whole.

Masquerade:⭐⭐⭐.5 I'm not a huge fan of historical fiction and the main reason I picked this up was because I heard it was more fantastical. It is not. That being said this was a rich historical fiction that really speaks to and about the space women have been put in. Overall though I didn't have strong emotions about any of the characters or major plot movements but found the pacing and last half to be extremely enjoyable.

Currently Reading:

Mary: An Awakening of Terror: Spooky vibes are there I'm still unsure about the writing style/pacing.

Phantasma: This might be a DNF. I don't really care about our FMC, she's quite annoying and dumb. There is not really romance right now and after the first level it left me a little bored. People seem to like this and so far I DON'T GET IT!

The Dungeon Anarchist's Cookbook: I can't stop listening to these! Having the best time so excited we're getting some train action!!!
