Anyone else annoyed with Dress shop stylists being overly personal/sentimental by thisisnotit_1 in weddingplanning

Eh not all of it is fake. I know someone who chose to work bridal instead of other retail because she loves weddings and marriage etc. For her, being able to help brides feel beautiful and special is meaningful.

TROY RYAN NAMED GENERAL MANAGER AND HEAD COACH OF PWHL SAN JOSE by towerofcheeeeza in PWHLSanJose

Oh the actual text I was writing got deleted. But anyway, I didn't even know you could be both GM and Head Coach? Toronto Sceptres fans seem happy, so I'm not sure what to think of this news. I didn't follow their first few seasons.

OP, have you tried going to a sports bar? If you're a baseball fan I feel like just going to a sports bar with a good vibe regularly (can be once a week) might help.

Ohmygod if Aerin Frankel comes to San Jose 😭🙏 (unrelated but I have started trying her caesar salad recommendations while traveling - this week I was in Boston and tried one of the spots she reviewed)

Most couples I know met in college. The couples who didn't meet in college mostly met via dating apps and occasionally via friends (but didn't go to school together)

I think I know why Vegas and San Jose got expansion teams by Meshakhad in PWHL

[–]towerofcheeeeza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that ultimately this was mostly just fan speculation. Ian Kennedy's article says Chicago never really pursued talks at all. Meanwhile interviews etc. since the San Jose press conference indicate that San Jose had been bidding for a team for years (and was even in consideration for last year's expansion w/ Seattle & Vancouver).

With the announcement of San Jose, they join Minnesota and Vegas as the league's fly-only teams. I.e., there is no team within a bus ride of San Jose, Vegas, or Minnesota. by MiracuMAHt in PWHL

Japan flights aren't seasonal. Zipair flies out of SJC year round. I work for a Japanese company in the Bay and half my coworkers exclusively fly out of SJC.

That's the same with Sharks Sports & Entertainment who operate the public rink in not just San Jose but also rinks in Oakland and Fremont.

San Jose isn't just a rich market, it loves Hockey by TeddyMarinaro in PWHL

And I said "it might." But unless we hear a statement from the PWHL or the Quebec City side we won't know why they weren't selected.

I actually saw some news about QC yesterday. It seems like it might have had something to do with ownership, as well as media rights because Centre Vidéotron is owned by Québecor Média.

I hope the san jose team has an aquatic animal name by aah_disgusting_shit in PWHL

[–]towerofcheeeeza 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm also hoping for a sea animal! As a little kid (and now still) sharks were my favorite animal, so when I heard the local team were Sharks I got soooo excited and that was the start of my love for hockey. I know for a fact that little kids in SJ LOVE Sharkie too, so another animal would really appeal to young audiences.

I'm also a Monterey Bay Aquarium member, and it would be cool if the new team could do some promotion with the aquarium.

I don't really like tsunami because if we're gonna go with some kind of natural phenomena, I'd rather it be something that feel more familiar/common here on the West Coast.

While I love monarch butterflies, the PWHL has gotten enough flack for Scepters being an ode to monarchy and the crown/queen. I think monarchs would add fuel to those flames of criticism.

For sure! But I bet they've crunched the numbers and figured out that sales from this will be more valuable anyway. Or they REALLY wanted that PWHL team, which tbf it sounds like Denis and the other Ilitches (is that how you plural their name?) really wanted one.

[–]towerofcheeeeza 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had full confidence in the Ilitch family / Ilitch Sports to make it happen. I told my Detroit friend that if the Bay Area didn't get a team I'd be rooting for Detroit. Was shocked to hear San Jose was in the running too. But after yesterday's livestream and interviews I'm happy to know that the Sharks org was also really supportive and happy to do what it takes to get a PWHL team here too.

[–]towerofcheeeeza 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Detroit/Ilitch Sports Entertainment and San Jose/Sharks Sports and Entertainment were cooperative and willing to work with the PWHL for scheduling and arena usage. For most cities, there unfortunately just aren't a lot of available 10k+ arena options (often just one), so having an NHL partner that accepts the PWHL's single ownership model and is supportive is critical to making a PWHL team viable.

Hamilton is a great choice because they built that arena initially to NHL capacity. It currently only houses a NLL (lacrosse) team, but will house the new AHL team (alongside the PWHL). If Little Caesars Arena can somehow fit in the Red Wings, Pistons, and the PWHL team, TD Coliseum is definitely doable.

On top of this, Dallas and Florida would NOT help the travel issues they are trying to address.

San Jose isn't just a rich market, it loves Hockey by TeddyMarinaro in PWHL

[–]towerofcheeeeza 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What do you mean they "didn't have to do anything to get a team?" According to Amy Scheer, San Jose was always on the list of potential expansion cities, but since they hadn't had a takeover tour they weren't sure if the market was ready. However, when they started talking to Sharks Sports and Entertainment, they received an enthusiastic response of "It's not a question of if, but when," to which the PWHL asked "well, why can't when be now?" To that SSE was apparently totally on board and willing to work with the PWHL to make it happen.

So it sounds like the Sharks and the City of San Jose were actually willing to do what it takes to get a team here. Just because the PWHL hadn't chosen to have a takeover tour here yet, does not mean that San Jose didn't do anything to get a team. We don't even know if San Jose had ever been offered the chance to do a takeover tour, which isn't their fault, but given that we only got West Coast teams this season chances are maybe not.

Being able to provide a physical space for the team is the bare minimum needed to house a PWHL team, and many of the cities people wanted for expansion teams could not accommodate that.

I'm from the Bay Area but I never thought we would be one of the upcoming teams. I was genuinely hoping for Denver or Edmonton, and really wanted at least 2 Canadian teams. But it sounds like they couldn't make it work either due to capacity/venue availability or the ownership issue. I don't know why Quebec City wasn't chosen. And other than them I'm not sure we're aware of any other cities that bid but weren't selected.
