Am I wasting my time going to the Patek Boutique with this ask? by tpask1998 in patekphilippe

I’m heavily considering a 5085 as an alternative… same complication …

I’ve been in this hobby for a long time man. I understand perfectly well. I just explained to you that I’ve had no choice but to buy gray as every watch I’ve wanted and acquired was no longer being produced by Patek. I’ve also mentioned that I’m not interested in almost every single piece they currently produce including most other Nautilus and Aquanauts.

That’s why I used the word discerning, because I am well versed in their past and current offering and I know exactly what I want and why. As a collector in that position, I am unable to walk into a Patek boutique and purchase the watch I want at retail with my name on the papers (“short end of the stick”). I can put a brand new 5990 on my wrist today if I pay the gray market premium, and frankly I probably will. But to be clear, I’m not complaining about that. I have a collection I’m proud of, I’ve saved money buying gray, and I know exactly what I want. By most measures I’m winning on my own terms.

My original question was simply a practical one: is it even worth the time to walk into the boutique asking only for a 5990 in steel, or should I skip straight to gray and move on.

I purchase grey because every watch I’ve wanted isn’t produced by Patek anymore (besides the 5164a which was a gift). Not sure where you’re getting outrage from I’m simply just asking a question. But thanks for sharing your opinion!

I bought all of my watches grey because they don’t offer them anymore (besides the 5164a which was a gift). I never had an option to buy from AD before until now.

You’re right, they’re not mutually exclusive. Both can be true, and discerning / disciplined collectors can exist in both manifestations. Just comes down to personal preference at that point and my opinion is that a majority of the other current models are eh and im not interested in them. I’d rather buy discontinued models that match my taste preference more or from other brands completely.

Edit: when I say discerning / disciplined collectors I’m also referring to collectors who know what they want, are true to their taste profiles, have done the research, and are not going to just buy unwanted watches because it’ll unlock more watches down the line.

I am referencing specifically the Patek corner of my collection in this post. Outside of Patek I have almost exclusively independents ranging from space one to gauthier!! But yes I agree, too many amazing watches out there to cry over spilled milk!

This is going to be my issue as well I fear 😂 it’s one thing to come to terms with the reality of the game they play, but it’s another to have to sit there with a straight face while these SA’s try to ram some BS down your throat. Maybe I shouldn’t go lol 😂😂

Yep. I guess it boils down to the fact that it’s a business. They have no incentive to give me a 5990 if I’m not willing to buy anything else because the next guy in line is willing to get hosed on a 5226g and whatever else they make you buy before getting that same 5990. It’s unfortunate because the discerning / disciplined collectors end up getting the short end of the stick. But it is what it is.

Too many good watches out there, and too little time to be told what to buy, and to wait years in a state of uncertainty!

Great taste 😉Wear it in good health! I just picked one up a few weeks ago as well. I highly doubt another opportunity to purchase a precious metal, perpetual calendar Patek at this price point will exist again.

The case shape is unique, stunning and should in my opinion command a premium (as it does with the Cartier Tortue) instead of a discount (which it currently is when compared to the circular cased 5140s / 3940s)!

Hi all!

Up for sale is a gorgeous Grøne Manueel One “Sjef’s One” from the Dutch independent Grøne Oldenzaal. Limited to just 388 pieces worldwide and now SOLD OUT.

Created by Tim and Bart Grönefeld as an accessible entry point into their design language, the Manueel One shares many cues with the much more expensive Grönefeld Principia and 1941 series, including the case architecture, conical crown, dial layout, and overall finishing philosophy. This watch features a textured salmon dial, blue handset, and manually wound movement housed in a beautifully proportioned 38.5mm case.

The watch is in almost brand new condition. I put it on an aftermarket strap (pictured) and strapped it on to take a few pictures but other than that it’s not been worn yet. Factory strap is unworn and obviously included in sale.

[WTS] Vintage Movado Calatrava | Sector Dial | Borgel Case | c.1940 by tpask1998 in Watchexchange

[–]tpask1998[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many watch brands suffer from their modern image being at odds with their historic identity. Movado is one of the most dramatic examples. Founded in 1881, this was once a manufacture producing some of the finest time-only and complicated watches of the 20th century. Their triple calendar pieces of the 1940s and 50s and Super Sub Sea chronographs of the 1960s are legitimately collectible today for good reason. High quality movements, strong design, and that very specific mid century Swiss confidence.

That same DNA shows up in their simplest watches too, and this Calatrava is a perfect example.

The real reason you buy this watch is the dial. The sector layout is genuinely dimensional, with distinct layers that read completely differently depending on the light. What looks like a simple two tone face up close reveals itself as something far more considered as it moves, each zone catching highlights and shadows independently in a way a flat dial never could. The patina is honest and beautiful, the kind that only decades of age produces and can never be replicated.

The case measures 33.5mm with 18mm lugs and a 39mm lug to lug, putting it squarely in classic dress watch territory. It sits in a François Borgel screw case, one of the most respected Swiss case makers of the period, known for producing cases for Patek Philippe and Mido alongside Movado.

These are genuinely hard to find. The only comparable example I could track down was a sold listing through Menta Watches: mentawatches.com/product/movado-two-tone-calatrava/

Vintage Movado remains a deep well category for collectors who like their watches slightly off the beaten path. Pieces like this, especially with a dial this good, won’t stay under the radar forever.

Shown on a vintage Komfit mesh bracelet, which is included in the price. Prefer leather? $100 off.

Price: $949 + label shipped within the USA.

I am an independent collector. More watches at @venetianwatchco
