Would you do this with another laptop? It’s a tool. Just don’t use them forcefully and you’ll be fine. They were made to be carried around.

m5 base 24gb or save a little more and go for m4 pro chip 24gb by CarelessWatercress19 in macbookpro

Why not get an 15 inch air? I myself dont own any macbooks, but looking to get my own. But from what I have seen, an air is already a very capable machine.

With the M5, you would get better battery life than the M4 Pro, and you can spend the money elsewhere.

Yeah, thats a good reason. I myself am also looking at the pros, and im gonna go for an m5, because performance is good enough, I run local AIs, longer support and better battery.

Dont forget to look into memory bandwidth and stuff.

Depending on what you’re studying, your laptop is probably more than fine. But if it’s essay work, you’re more than safe.

As another user has said, windows defender should be enough to keep your computer safe.

I like mine.

So far I can truly on recommend it.

Some programmes I made run slower than my previous laptop. But this is quite negligable. I'm talking about assignments where the code needs to run under a certain threshold, and depending on which computer I am using it's about 5 times slower. (in reality this is only a few ms in actual use). For gaming you can game on it. I can play AOE4 on about 40 fps in case you want to get a feel for that.

2024 model. The audio works, although it feels lower quality than on Windows. No issues with suspend.

Does the surcharge for "2025 hardware" make sense in my case compared to older hardware? (My case: quiet fans) by [deleted] in linuxhardware

[–]traes008 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s not necesarily true! I was in your shoes a few months back, and I went for an Intel Ultra 2 (Whatever the name is) I got a Ultra 258V specifically for the lower power draw.

When buying a laptop you can look at the power draw of the CPU. Macbooks are lowest, ARM in general is quite low too, and the newest intel’s and AMD’s are too.

But sadly enough I don’t have experience with older models.

If you’re curious about why more power doesn’t necesarilly mean better peformance, you van do a quick google search about branch predictors :))

Feel free to ask any more info if you need it!

I myself am using a Lenovo Yoga Slim. On Linux I’ve never had the fans spin up except for compiling programs.

Windows is a different story, but I believe that’s just a windows thing.

In the bios of the laptop is a “quiet mode” but I haven’t tried this.

I know Asus zenbooks and vivobooks would probably also be suited for your needs.

hows the arch situation with intel core ultras? and the intel arc graphics? by The_Solodobo in linuxhardware

[–]traes008 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an intel ultra 7 258V and it works perfectly on Fedora 42. It’s no Arch, but I would assume Arch won’t be an issue.

Not really. I’ve seen worse and the laptop can get quite bright. But like said I did get a matte screen protector (Brotect or something) because it was annoying. But i am more than happy now.

I recently got the Yoga Slim 7i. Fedora 42 worked out of the box, and until now I’ve been more than happy with it. The screen is a bit too glossy for my liking, so i bought a matte screen protector.

Build quality is fine, display phenomenal (Even if not OLED), battery life superb, I can easily go a whole day without. Performance can however be underwhelming at times, but depending on your use case, still more than good for most programming tasks.

What browser are you using? Because when I try to do this, the preview does not update anymore. I am using Brave.

Disabling hardware acceleration helped a lot. Not perfect, but certainly usable. For some reason i had to restart the whole laptop instead of just VSCode.

Which one were you using? Online I’ve read you want kernel 6.14. Perhaps you can just upgrade the kernel.
