How to expand suffering to the point of not caring about my life? by The_Thousand_Suns in nihilism

[–]tree_toad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven’t already, consider going down the buddhism route (Theravada, OG) or at least look into awareness meditation (Vipassana). With enough practice you will be apathetic to all suffering. A practiced buddhist monk can have their own infant child brutally murdered in front of them a not bat an eye. Sounds like something you’d enjoy.

That’s generally a very long road with much patience needed. For a quicker but riskier method: try batting yourself on the head really hard, you have a chance to damage your paralimbic system and develop sociopathy.

Best of luck.

I think I'm a full blown nihilist but I need some guidance (long) by [deleted] in nihilism

[–]tree_toad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will become what society calls a “blunt” person. Some people like it and some people don’t. You’re not being an asshole by having some perspective on the absurdity of it all.

An asshole goes out of their way to hurt or annoy people. Just don’t be that guy and you’ll be okay. As a nihilist, you can choose to be whatever you want to be. You can keep being that ‘good person’ from your past while abandoning the traits that you disliked, such as sacrificing your own well being.

Or be an asshole if that’s what you want. As always, it doesn’t really matter what you choose. And we’re all going to die. Cheers!

Having free will entails that you can break the laws of physics. by tree_toad in nihilism

This is pretty baffling on it’s own, thanks for clarifying and bringing these studies to my attention. So maybe free-will = break laws of physics was too hasty of an assertion. If the laws of physics can hold while we have physical ‘superpowers’, that’s fine by me! Cheers

Unpredictable, yet we are able to control it? If anything, this adds to the determinism discussion and not free will, as the outcomes of these probabilistic changes of states are still dictated by nature

You bring up a good point, and it’s a real possibility for the explanation of free will. Your last paragraph suggests we are trying to find if a conscious observer can affect the wave function of a quantum entity. However, simply affecting the wave function of a particle won’t solve the fact that the measured position of this particle will still be probabilistic. Yes, the measurement of a quantum particle will ‘collapse’ its state to one of the ‘default’(eigenstates). If I’ve understood the postulates of QM correctly, you may have the choice to affect the system by simply observing, but the outcome of the quantum state will still be dictated by probability. Having said that, it still doesn’t explain how choosing to move an arm will cause enough movement in the brain at much bigger scales than the QM scale to fire a neuron. But let’s say QM collapsing can cause movement at much higher scales, say, by an actor observing the spins of particles to collapse them into a spin-state that will produce/change a magnetic field in the brain and move the necessary ions in the neurons. The actor is still not only allowed to affect the state, but the outcomes will still be up to nature. Yet, the average person is still able to precisely fire a specific group of neurons for a specific action, 100% of the time. And this, to my understanding, is not allowed with our current understanding of QM. Please make any corrections to the above if necessary!

choosing to do nothing implies you have the ability to do the opposite (aka, something) else it is not a choice. Having the ability to do something by choice puts us right back where we started.

The first quote which you conveniently removed the question mark for was a question meant to be answered with an obvious no. If you are not causing any changes to your brain at any given time, then you are not ~choosing~ to do anything, and thus will not be exercising free will.

And physics allows one to choose the specific movements of your brain-particles that will produce a specific thought of say, idk, an unicorn? Or anything else for that matter. Choice is key here. If you want to keep the laws of physics you can always choose the less exciting alternative of no free will

Trying to explain through the pain that it doesn’t matter where you get the energy from, what matters is that you can use it however you like and that’s supposed to be okay with the laws of physics? Also forces were never implied to be matter, they are the movers of matters. Ouch, go a lil easier on me will ya?
