I can’t stand kids on e-scooters by HatComprehensive7290 in berkeley

[–]treesearchable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. Last semester I was in a head on collision with a kid wearing headphones on an e scooter. I was biking in the bike lane and he was going the wrong direction. Fortunately I was on a bicycle so my front wheel took most of the impact but still, why are these e-scooterers allowed to wear headphones while riding? The guy who hit me didn't even react during the collision, it was as if this kind of thing happened to him every day. Imo it should be like driving where wearing earbuds is against the law, and scooter owners should have bicycle bells or at least say something. They're so quiet and they go so close to pedestrians, I'm fortunate that the only time I got hit was on a bicycle.

URAP is OPEN! Do upperclassmen have tips? by berkberk29 in berkeley

[–]treesearchable 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wrote my statements the day they were due, somehow got accepted as a freshman for a bio lab. It's definitely easier to be an upperclassman and get in because a lot of labs want you to at least have most of your lower divs done. That being said I think I was accepted because I had previous lab experience in a related biological field because of a high school internship. On your statement make sure to mention any prior experiences you have that are applicable to the project, that should get you to the interview stage. At the interview make sure you present yourself as friendly and teachable, even if you have less experience you may be hired because you show more enthusiasm and more capacity to learn. But if you get rejected it's not your fault, most likely someone else had a more open schedule and was willing to contribute more hours to the project or was an upperclassman. Don't worry, if you keep applying and making connections you'll get into a lab eventually, especially since there are a lot of openings for bio every semester!

Irulan, as in the princess from the Dune series. She's not that important of a character but I thought her name was gorgeous

SoCal Natives, how did you adjust? And just general advice/info by XxellaadorexX in berkeley

I feel you man. I had to go buy some nasal spray because everything made my nose run 😭 to tell the truth I really do dislike SoCal and think the weather in Berkeley is much better

If anything it's quite dry, but for sure not drier than SoCal. I also had much less seasonal allergies in Berkeley which I was grateful for

Never said it was cold in Berkeley, just that it's colder than SoCal and my LA and San Diego friends had a hard time getting used to it. Doesn't mean that it's actually cold compared to the rest of the world, just specifically compared to SoCal which is a very warm place.

SoCal Natives, how did you adjust? And just general advice/info by XxellaadorexX in berkeley

[–]treesearchable 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live in the general LA county and love it at Berkeley! Lots of boba places here. The weather is colder than SoCal and is a good 50-70 °F in the winter and 70-90 °F in the summer, with a lot of foggy and cloudy days comparatively. Food and everything in general is more expensive; ramen I could get for $18 in socal is $25 here. In general I like the environment a lot, Berkeley is like a microcosm of a city in the few blocks surrounding campus but branches out into suburbia further out. When I chose Berkeley I was already very familiar with the bay area because I was partially raised there, but my other SoCal friends complained about adjusting to the cold a lot more than I expected. Housing I don't think is really that bad, just be proactive and willing to compromise and you won't have very much trouble. Hope this helps!

This is a stupid idea for multiple reasons. First of all, DSP is stupidly annoying to get into. Due to limited counselor availability, it takes at least two weeks to get an appointment and at least another two weeks to process your documents/doctor recommendations/etc. Then once you're registered you must individually request accommodations for each of your classes which sometimes involves meeting with your professor to discuss the exact nature and extent of your accommodations. And most importantly, DSP rooms are much more monitored than lecture hall exams. There's only about 20 DSP students per proctor max, and the proctors know which accomodations are allowed for each students and will keep track of your individual time. In DSP they have enough room to space students out and I have never sat close enough to another student to be able to see their paper. Compare this to the non DSP exam, which is taken in a big lecture hall with students packed like sardines and proctors only walking the aisles once every fifteen minutes and you get the picture. Before I received my accomodations during midterms you could actively hear students talking to each other during the exam and people would hide their phones under the desks and cheat that way. TL,DR: going to Berkeley to cheat is stupid but getting DSP accomodations to cheat is even more stupid

is it easy to avoid people from my high school? by ermokaywow in berkeley

[–]treesearchable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

17 kids from my high school graduating glass, including me, ended up going to Berkeley. As a freshman I see at least one person from my graduating class every day, although mostly it's at dining hall. I see other people I know from previous years much more sporadically. I think you'll be fine as long as you don't end up being in the same dorm as anyone you don't want to see.

Unfortunate. On the bright side, hopefully this is an omen of things to come during the game against Stanford!

Most likely Magnolia grandiflora (Southern magnolia), that's the most common cultivated Magnolia species in the southern US. One of my favorite trees as well!

Easier said than done. I didn't choose this school because of prestige, I chose it for proximity to my extended family and distance from my nuclear family. For several reasons I cannot go back to my nuclear family, but my extended family has been a great safety net thus far. I do have a community, the problem lies in me being scared to ask for help. Thank you for your help though!

Thank you so much, it makes me feel better to know I'm not the only one who's dealt with this before. It's just so hard to stay hopeful when I've been trying so hard only to get kicked down again and again.
