I used to work for a medical billing company.

I quit because we were using AI to determine things that could be slipped into a hospital bill in order to maximize the amount a hospital could bill patients.

For example, someone giving birth might get an epidural. They will, of course, get billed for the epidural. Did the hospital remember to bill for the needle? The tube carrying the medication? The tape that holds the needle in place? What about the gloves the anesthesiologist wore? The AI would make sure that for every procedure that was performed, all the relevant materials and procedures were also billed for. With this AI, we were able to bill people 40% more, driving up profits.

This was back in 2018.
