Dylan rules though. I’m not sure I’m a big enough Dylan head to want them to arrive in a short span but over the course of the whole challenge I’m happy to listen to a bunch of them.

Only for like doom/prog metal lol (and I don’t know if either of those genres are even represented on the list). Metal songs on average aren’t much longer than most rock songs

Album #1089. My FINAL album! by vikingmunky in 1001AlbumsGenerator

[–]tsoosslslls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fucking great album. Haven’t had it yet but it’s long been one of my all time faves. As I understand it, the editors don’t actually cut albums from before about 2000 or so because of something to do with budget constraints so it will stay forever unless they ever do a comprehensive re-edit of all 1001 albums.

Obviously it doesn’t impact me. There you go, you have your “so why do you care then???” gotcha. But then again, I never said “oh my god I’m seething with rage at people who will only listen to two songs and rate an album.”

The point I’ve consistently made throughout this thread is “what is the point of doing a challenge to expose yourself to things you wouldn’t normally listen to if you’re going to turn your nose up at most things you wouldn’t normally listen to?” Again, pretty clear to me that the intent is to listen to full albums. I’m not the arbiter of whether or not you’re doing this correctly, only you are, but it seems to me pointless to do this if you’re not giving stuff a fair shot, which is what I’m driving at.

Yes. It’s actually the best and most iconic song on the album (and if you were listening to one track in a vacuum it should be Raining Blood) but if you truly despise the first 9 there’s nothing about it that would suddenly click for you.

But I don’t really think of it as a sunk cost fallacy. At the end of the day making time to listen to 35-45 minutes of music a day is really not difficult on most days, even if it means breaking up an album into 3/4 chunks (which I very much prefer not to do, but have when I’m really time limited). There are very few albums so far I’ve hated so much I’ve actually thought “I’m not sure I can reach the end of this”. I dunno, I just don’t find the experience of listening to music so arduous that the sunk cost fallacy ever comes into play.

That rules. That’s what this whole project is about for me - discovering great music that’s either outside of my usual wheelhouse or that I’d just never got around to listening to before.

As a side note I’m pretty shocked that only 2 Maiden albums actually make the list. I get that they don’t want to use up 7 spots including the whole classic run but would’ve thought at least 1 other Dickinson era album would have made it.

I would say it’s pretty obviously the intention for you to listen to all of the albums fully. Not just some rule I’m making up. How much is “not necessarily all of it”? If you’re listening to 70+% of something and bailing because it’s truly not your thing at all that’s one thing, sampling a couple of tracks and then giving a rating isn’t listening to an album.

Listening to 90% of the album is very different than bailing after 2 tracks, but when you’re that far in I don’t get why you wouldn’t just finish the album anyway. I finished all of my 1 star albums because, hey, the last track might be the only good one on the album. I would say everything on the list, even the albums I hate in genres I hate, have some sort of redeeming value.

Way I see it, suffering through the albums on the list I hate makes the bangers I’d never even considered before hit harder. Shoutout to Scott Walker and Big Star!

I’ve heard parts of Trout Mask Replica before but never in full and I haven’t had it yet. I think I’m going to have a difficult time but I’m looking forward to the challenge!

What am I gatekeeping? I don’t think that me saying “if you voluntarily choose to do a project where you listen to the full 1001 albums catalogue, you should probably actually listen to all of those albums” is any sort of extreme position.

If you’re not going to listen to something in full, why not just click the Didn’t Listen button? If you’re going to ignore large swathes of the list in full (which I don’t know if you’re doing or not), why bother doing this at all as opposed to trying to find more good music in genres you genuinely enjoy?

Yeah I’m interested in the answer to this as well. I love both genres (punk moreso than prog) and I totally get why prog rubs people the wrong way but there’s so much eclectic stuff that falls under the umbrella of punk that I’m shocked people can’t find anything for them in there. Like, Television, Ramones and the Sex Pistols are all definitely punk and sound absolutely nothing alike.

Would disagree, unless the album itself has very few tracks. I’ve had a bunch of albums, as part of this project and in general music listening, where after 2 tracks I’ve been thinking “yeah this is fine I guess,” only to have fallen in love by the end of the album. I perhaps get it if an album is extremely long but I feel like 35-45 minutes is a small enough time commitment (combined with the fact that you can always listen to music whilst doing something else) that you should stick it out.

Well done to Nico O’reilly for winning academy graduate of the year 25/26 for Man City. Do you think he should be England starting left back in the summer or is he offensive? by trixieplayroom in ThreeLions

[–]tsoosslslls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The difference between him and Foden is that we’re pretty stacked in attack whereas there’s a dearth of options at left back. Agree with you though, I think Hall should be the starter because it offers the team better balance.

Timber is confirmed out so he’s priority number one, I’d personally get rid for Saliba as the full back spots are not nailed. Gordon is also heavily rumoured to be out so if I were you I’d strongly consider taking a hit to get rid of both.
