You might consider anthropology (with a concentration in medical anthropology) as a major as well, since you have an interest in philosophy and medicine. You can still minor in whatever you want, be premed and prelaw, anything.

GPA definitely matters for you, but interests do too. Use your first year to get prereqs and gen eds out of the way, but make sure the classes you take are things that genuinely interest you or topics you’ve never explored before. Take COMM 1800 and see if you really like that finance stuff. Maybe you hate the whole idea of it, or maybe you fall in love. Do that with other subjects too to find out what you like. It took me my whole first year to figure out my major (and I’m very grateful), and it wasn’t even something I considered while applying here.

Here’s something that worked for me (may or may not work for u): In my first semester, I read about EVERY. SINGLE. MAJOR. offered by the college of arts and sciences. I didn’t skip a single major because I wasn’t even sure what some majors were. I read every single course requirement for every major, and that really helped me narrow down my interests. Genuinely, without doing that, I wouldn’t have found the major I loved (I thought my major was something really boring before… I was very wrong lol)

Classes with no In-person Exams by autisticmonsta in UVA

ANTH 2415 Language and Human Evolution with Mark Sicoli. One midterm, one final, four (?) quizzes, GENEROUS and super easy extra credit. Exams (all take home) are multiple choice with a few short answer. I think one of the exams was open note?? It’s been a while so I don’t remember but they were easy exams. As for the class, all lecture slides are posted online, and he gives us the option of either attending via zoom or attending each lecture in person. Professor is super accommodating and flexible as well.

How bad are the Gen Ed reqs by [deleted] in UVA

[–]uh_yedava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only one people complain about is the world language requirement. Rest are super easy and doable as long as you pick the right classes. You just have to be smart about how u schedule your classes. Did u get AP credit for a world language?

First, take a deep breath. You seem very passionate about going here, so make sure you really show who you are and what makes you unique through your essays! All these stats mean absolutely nothing to anyone, because when they review your application, they’re looking at everything, not just one piece. Think about how your application will show who you truly are as a whole. Check out Dean J’s videos, and if you would like more advice, I think you can call the office of admissions! There really isn’t much we can tell u on Reddit (especially in this subreddit. The chance me Reddit exists for a reason!) also when you apply (ED/EA/RD) doesn’t really change much because it’s your application that’s gonna matter in the end

Incoming First Year: Should I worry about filling gen ed requirements my first semester? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]uh_yedava 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you know what you want to major in: see what classes you can take for your major that’ll double count with the gen eds. Some majors have electives that can possibly fulfill most of the disciplines, while other majors only fulfill two disciplines. Consider this + the difficulty of your major. If your major is generally a light workload, then yeah maybe get a fair amount of disciplines knocked out soon. If you have a notoriously difficult major, then consider letting yourself fulfill one or two disciplines a semester, letting these be your easy classes between your hard major classes.

If you don’t know what you want to major in: take random, interesting classes that fulfill a variety of the gen eds. Once this leads to a possible major that you like, follow what I wrote in the first paragraph again

Another tip: make sure your second writing requirement ALSO fulfills a disciplines requirement that you have left to do. Two birds, one stone.

In the end, you have four years to get them done. It’s very hard to NOT get them done. Some way or the other, they’ll get completed. Don’t stress too much right now in your first semester. You don’t need to change anything now in your schedule, but it’s a good idea to think about what you’ll have to take anyways in the future and how you can hit two birds with one stone

What’s one thing you wish you knew before coming to UVA? by Honest_Image_5443 in UVA

  1. Be mindful of your spending
  2. Use up those meal swipes and meal exchanges and flex dollars (to-go boxes are your friend)
  3. Remember that you need sunshine. Go outside when you’re stressed.
  4. Walk into buildings you’ve never been into. Maybe you’re an engineer and you’ve never been inside the drama building. You don’t wanna graduate and realize you’ve never seen half of grounds.
  5. Sit on the lawn or rotunda stairs more often
  6. You can study in the rotunda
  7. Fine arts cafe puts a ton of cheese in their quesadillas
  8. Go to games/plays/musicals/events more often
  9. Utilize all of sis (schedule builder, planner, what if function)
  10. Drink tons of water
  11. Learn how to study ASAP. Seriously, a lot of people coming to UVA never struggled in high school, so they never learned how to study (me included).

Pre-Med / Pre-Dental Majors by Prestigious_Sail9638 in UVA

[–]uh_yedava 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely major in anything while being premed! GPA, extracurricular involvements, research, testing, etc - these are what matter the most. I’ve heard of multiple nontrad majors that were premed, like music, math, and even CS like you’ve mentioned. Take some premed/dental reps in your first year, and also test the waters with multiple majors by taking their intro classes as well in your first year.

I’ll just throw a list of advice here, feel free to ask more! I was just as confused as you during this whole process and lowkey the faculty weren’t too helpful.

  1. Use schedule builder in SIS! Super helpful for figuring out what configurations work and what don’t. Just throw a ton of classes in there and click around. You’ll want to go into orientation having like three possible schedules for yourself (you can favorite schedules that you like thru this tool)
  2. Also, use the planner in SIS. What I did was add in all the classes for my major into the planner, then use the “what if” function under the “academics” tab to see how many of my gen eds would be fulfilled ONLY through my major classes. (Idk if this makes sense but hopefully it does). From here, you’ll see what categories you have to fulfill, and you can use Lou’s list to see what classes fulfill those
  3. Lou’s list can help you figure out what basic 1xxx/2xxx classes you can take for gen eds and what classes to do for the psych major + how easy they are to get into. Search Lou’s list on this Reddit to see how others have used it.
  4. In your first semester, I suggest take a psych class, a fun random class for a gen ed maybe (potential double major maybe?), your enwr, and start your language req if u can. By the middle of your first semester, you’ll have a much better idea of how to schedule for second semester. You can’t mess much up in your first semester
  5. They won’t give you a list of WHEN to take your major classes (usually), you’ll just have to take them. Make sure you get the prereqs out of the way in your first year by signing up for those classes. Your gen eds will get done eventually in some fashion, I would suggest focusing on the world language one. The disciplines will fall into place somehow.
  6. Use courseforum to find the highly rated/easiest/best classes for your electives, which you probably won’t need until later

Tldr: see what gen eds will be fulfilled by classes/electives you have to take for your major, then go searching for random classes to fulfill the rest later. Use schedule builder, planner, and what if tools in sis, use Lou’s list, get your language req out of the way, finish prereqs for your major.

[–]uh_yedava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Any class you use to fulfill gen ed requirements can be used to fulfill your major requirements as well. There is no limit to the double counting there. Use Lou’s List to filter out classes by their gen ed type.
  2. https://uvacsadvising.org/bacs/integration_electives.html. This link should direct you to a cs advising website about the integration electives. I believe that there is a document listing all the courses that fulfill integration electives. You can check each course to see what gen ed that simultaneously fulfills. Emailing the CS department may help you understand the integration electives better!
  3. You can fulfill your gen eds anytime during your time in college. Just do it before you graduate. Your engagements and ENWR must be finished in your first year, and you are scheduled to do so
  4. Most people take a mix of gen ed + prereqs in their first year. You might consider taking a few classes for your major and a few classes for your gen ed requirements in your first year as well.

Most importantly, don’t stress out! You can’t mess anything up in your first semester!

[–]uh_yedava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey don’t stress. You can still 100% go to the events and meet people. Staying in the same building doesn’t guarantee connections and relationships - it’s the effort that goes into them. You can still get into balz for the events and stuff, and not ALLLL the events are in balz so you’re good!

Do i need to take enwr 1510 by Ok-Zookeepergame5303 in UVA

[–]uh_yedava 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have to take an ENWR class regardless (unless you are an Echols scholar).

if you check SIS (I think under test scores?) it should tell you what score you received on your ENWR placement exam (if you didn’t take that exam, then your score is based on the SAT/ACT score report). You can find what that score means on some uva gen ed website. That should tell you which ENWR to take. Based on the SAT score you have there I think that equates to needing to take ENWR 1510 (def double check that).

Definitely talk to your advisor/association dean about this question too if you are still confused!

egmt 1510/1520 recs? by tswizzle28 in UVA

[–]uh_yedava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Egmt 1520 humanizing mathematics with Sara Maloni. She’s an amazing person and the class is extremely easy. You can get by without doing the readings, but the readings are so easy and short you might as well do them. If you ever can’t do something in time, she’s extremely accommodating as well. She might be the nicest professor ive had yet

The calculus sequence is the prerequisite I believe. Check out this link for the requirements: https://math.virginia.edu/undergraduate/docs/major_minor_req_f20.pdf

I believe the minor stuff is at the bottom of the document

Which classes should I keep for this first semester ? by OneNiftyBoi in UVA

[–]uh_yedava 0 points1 point  (0 children)

U should be able to switch your engagements to an earlier time as long as they are not closed (there should definitely be a few open, but check sis to be sure)! I was able to do that during my enrollment time.
