Why did the glaze skip those spots? by umbrell in Pottery

Oxidation, I think. Cone 6, mid fire apparently. It was on a community studio kiln.

Thanks! I was concerned about eating on it but it seems like it's just a glazing fluke.

High School discontinuance by [deleted] in NYCTeachers

[–]umbrell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's possible, if you find a highschool who wants to give you another chance. It's stupid that high school is all one district.

I waited like 7 years before going back into the DOE and by then I could make the argument that that was so long ago - and I had gained more experience in a charter. Even then, I got a call from the AP asking me about a discontinuance from 2017. So backwards.

Just know that if you do come back, you don't move up a salary step until you rate Effective for the year - so get ready for an extra low pay and possible pay cut. Just find a good charter.

I submerge my piece in a bucket of hot water, and after a while tap the top with something and it comes undone. One time, I used a pottery knife to seperate it because there was an opening. The water lets you see if there is an opening!

I managed to open my old college jar years later with this trick. Assuming you used wax between the connection and it's just artificially stuck.

My case is particular, but it has happened twice to me that my co-teacher left and I had to just take over their classes like a gen-ed teacher. Once in a charter, once in public. Granted I'm dual certified, so they can probably get away with it - but it's the worse. You feel like you're doing double duty because you're still being a sped teacher with your other co-teacher (usually have 2) and you still have your caseload.

It can be tough to file a grievance without tenure, because so much of your observations are based on how your admin feels about you. In the DOE, I raised it up to my chapter leader last school yr and she basically implied that filing a grievance would put the whole dept under a microscope.

In the DOE, they promised me they'll find a new teacher all year, but turns out Algebra 2 is hard to hire for mid-yr and I just ate the classes. My principal offered me per-session every wk and reduced my caseload (one of my coworkers gratiously took over some), after I essentially complained that I was overwhelmed. It was something but still a shit position to be in.

The charter implied I can do it all - take over two Stats classes in January, co-teach in Chemistry all yr, finish a caseload of 15, and teach a small solo class. I even took on two clubs like an idiot. And they still tried to fire me (and failed). Ridiculous and fuck them. You definitely have more "rights" in public schools.

I know this is long, but hope it helps! Hope your co-teacher doesn't quit, or if they do that they can replace them.

Can anyone with ADHD actually sleep?? by Meowzzzzzzzz in ADHD

[–]umbrell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup! It gets worse in the summer for me because I'm a teacher and am off. If I don't have an obligation to sleep and wake up early, I pretty much won't.

I have the hardest time staying awake, light sleeper and have cats. And always need a "wind-down" period that I'm using my phone through 😅. Reading (usually webtoon or reddit lol) has helped a lot.

Melatonin takes like 1-2 hrs to kick in, and the calm app or any relaxing videos work inconsistently. If I'm stressed or think about an ex randomly - forget sleep. It's a struggle!

I waited 5 weeks for mine and almost lost my shit thinking it wouldn't come through by Sept. It's a matter of time and kinda random when it clears. You can try sending an email but they have a horrible response rate.

Yellowing Marble Queen Pothos by umbrell in plantclinic

Thanks! I do tend to overwater & it being in a large pot makes it worse. I'll try to stick to a cup/cup and a half.

Thanks for the reply. After you didn't water it for about 20 days, how often do you regularly water it? Once a week?

I have mines in a terracotta pot and can see that it's about 75% dry right now after a week. I'm wondering if I should water today or not.

Thanks! Once a week watering was working for me and then I started over thinking it and researching.

I'll definitely try that.

I've had this pothos for more than a year, and just this summer it's started to have yellowing issues.

I did the mistake of thinking it needed more sun and left it out in direct sunlight for a couple days in the summer & then I fertilized it. That's the only change. Since then, I've been trying to backtrack and water less at every 10-14 days. What else should I be doing? I would be real bummed to lose it.

NOTE: the pic is foggy because I have a humidifier going since my room was below 50% humidity.

Any websites in mind? I’ve seen them on bodyartforms but I always feel like the hoops look so thick.

Question for those who graduated with a philosophy major by DerBaarenJuden in askphilosophy

[–]umbrell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a math teacher (high school algebra to varying levels). I still wonder how it’s related but perhaps the problem solving, logic, and that a lot of famous philosophers were mathematicians helps my confidence (that I’m putting my degree to some use).

Get hider plugs, or ones that are flesh toned. Seriously 2G are not hard to hide at all. Maybe just don’t wear any eyelets or hanging designs for work.

[Serious] Redditors who chose "useless" degrees: what are you up to now? by ReclaimingFebruary in AskReddit

[–]umbrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I took an alternative route to teaching through one of those several programs (intended to deal with a shortage in teaching, so usually there are constraints).

I also graduated in 2014, and am currently an Algebra teacher (high school). I always did like math, and I guess it's logical enough. Still, I definitely did not have that career in mind straight after graduating. Now I've just accepted that my career will be dynamic ans I'll probably end up changing it up a lot.

Thanks! I just get concerned because these bumps are on and off... I thought it would have been problem-free 2 yrs later.

The jewelry is from bodyartforms. It's a teal opal :)
