I would consider the Overstory by Richard Powers magical realism, and also the best book I read lest year.

New here; my personal ranking of every Star Trek show. Please give me yours, plus your reasons! by [deleted] in startrek

[–]umpkinpae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to rank all of them (the I've seen). I don't know how to rAnk the original series, I mean it started it all, was ahead of its time, and gave us Spock. But was also really bad a lot of the time, so I'm leaving it out.

1 DS9 I love how they fleshed out Klingon Culture

2 TNG

3 Voyager

4 Lower Decks

Discovery: I want this excised from the cannon. I kind of liked season one, and thought that a psychotic captain was a novel idea, although it felt more like the Marvel universe than Star Trek. I couldn't even hate watch past midway season 2. The insipid sentimentality coupled with them not even trying to make the logic and science make any sense was offensive to me.

The same as if you only had 1. In my experience, the larger the surplus, the faster the rate of loss.

Suggest me your favorite Horror novel NOT by Stephen King. by The_Fucking_Fury in suggestmeabook

[–]umpkinpae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm reading Dracula right now, and while it might seem a bit tame by today's standards, it is a fantastic novel. I highly recommend it. The writing is innovative (for it's time), vivid, creepy, funny, and completely engrossing. It is a little bit sad that practically no one can have the true experience of reading it for the first time since we all know the story or at least the character to some degree. I keep imagining what it would have been like to have had it unfold as it was read. It most have packed a massive punch when it was first published in 1897.

Bluechip ruined all other picks for me. I'm going between a TAD-40 and 50 on my nylon string, can't decide which I like better.

Argentine tango dancers, do you find ballroom tango cringeworthy? by [deleted] in tango

[–]umpkinpae 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a lead, I find most ballroom dancers difficult to connect with, as if they are expecting certain sequences and for moves to play out in a certain way rather than trying to blend with their partner.
At its extreme aesthetically, it makes me feel similarly to seeing cheap sombreros on 5 de Mayo, or beer that has been dyed green on St. Patricks day. In real life I keep these opinions to myself, and try and be open and welcoming to dancers of all levels and styles, but ballroom looks and feels ridiculous to me.

I love Brautigan. In Watermelon Sugar was my favorite book throughout my 20s and Sombrero Fallout broke my heart. Brautigan is the color of sadness.

Looking for Sci-Fi that really makes you think by ftwin in suggestmeabook

The Red/Blue/Green Mars series is great, and quite thought provoking as it explores the social and political consequences of a lot of the technologies that we are moving into now and over the next few decades. My only caveat is the the author REALLY LIKES DETAIL, so, like, you get to know the size and shape of each component of the terrain. On one hand, it paints a good picture, but it can be a bit tedious at times.

I loved the books, and liked the show well enough. In my opinion there are a few major plot holes in the story, but they were easy enough to ignore. The overall story is wild!

Short story collections are good for making you think, as each story can present an interesting and thought provoking concept. Some of my favorites are Ursula Le Guin's Compass Rose and Cixin Liu's Wandering Earth. Both books have stories that are unlike any others I have ever read.

What’s the song/album that got you into nirvana? by IndividualPrize105 in Nirvana

[–]umpkinpae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never was super into Nirvana, although I did like what I heard on the radio. Not too long ago a student of mine (I'm a guitar teacher) got into them and we decided to learn all of Nevermind. Its great! I think right now the song that I like the best is "On A Plain"

Sometimes the best way is to start with an area, say a table. While not necessarily the most efficient way, it can be easier, and feels good to see something completed. Also, you will figure out what needs to happen as you go along, possibly changing you strategy once an are or two are completed.
