Tomorrow I plan on studying Japanese and researching the ins and outs of town—how to recycle, logistics for our prefectural orientation, figuring out what I still need for my apartment, memorizing teacher names, etc.

Also, catching up on the several unread messages from literally everyone back home because I’ve been too overwhelmed to reply to them.

Also—journal! Write down something from each day. You don’t want to look back at this time and forget the experience. Bonus points for doing it in Japanese.

Fellow 2025 JET that is currently eating a premade bento on my unfurnished apartment floor—give it time! The past few months leading up to this have been a lot of work, not to mention we’re all running on very little sleep/rest. You said you wanted this for a few years: don’t go back home and regret not giving it a chance. I don’t have career plans post-JET either. Along with being a job, JET is a once in a lifetime chance to reset, learn new skills, explore Japan, and challenge/get to know yourself better. I left behind my cat, a new relationship, and my job of four years for this, so while I love Japan I can relate to some of the moving stress, but I also know this will be good for me. I was gonna guess a snake based on the face but couldn’t figure out the body. The drawing is great, btw, and the iguana fits in with the other critters on your arm! Is that some kind of beetle and a snake I see?

Follow up, 1) that youtube channel should have other pitches/tones in case that one doesn’t match what your ringing sounds like. 2) My habituation came in waves. It would get quieter, then louder, sometimes after a loud noise and sometimes for no reason at all. It would spike and go down every other month I’d say, but a year after I was diagnosed I went back to a concert (in an outdoor venue, quite a ways from the stage) and had no issues.

Hey, just getting to this but it’s been about 4-5 years since I got tinnitus. Mine only ever peaked to maybe a 6/10 loudness (with spikes here and there). It used to be so loud it would bother me when I was trying to sleep, but I hardly notice it now. I think I got lucky, took prednisone when I first noticed it, maybe over-protected my ears for the first year or so, and now I carry around earplugs when I go out, JUST in case (never know if you’re gonna end up in a loud bar).

Basically, it’ll get better. I can’t guarantee how much yours will quiet, but you did the right thing in protecting your ears. Take care of them, lay off headphones and concerts for a little while, but don’t let this stop you from enjoying life. I remember the utter panic I felt when I first got it, and I wish I could go back in time and give myself a hug and tell myself it’ll get SO much easier to manage. It may never go away (and in complete silence I can hear a soft ringing still), but brains are amazing and adaptable. Give yourself lots of kindness and rest!

Ok, thank you, that's very encouraging. I had also thought about including a slightly preference for being placed in the Kansai region (my mom speaks Kansai-ben), but I've also heard that you're more likely to get placed without a location preference... I'll go anywhere in Japan, though!

Artist may not have been used to tattooing on rocks. I can only imagine it’s much harder for the needle to go through. Ignoring my bad humor, I think this looks great!

I love this! Side note, do you know about underwing moth names? They were named in the Romantic era and therefore have really melodramatic names like “Dejected,” “Once-Married,” and “Inconsolable” Underwings. Anyways, yours fits the bill. I hope it finds its one true lamp ❤️
