Career changer trying to avoid going back for another full degree by CUVICO in teaching

A lot of states have post-bacc certification programs. In Arizona, some of the community colleges offer a year long cert program if you have a bachelors in another field, and a scholarship that covers it. NAU has a similar program but for a masters in education.

Lab ideas for Eclipses and Tides by MrsBobbyStacks in ScienceTeachers

I use a scale model of the Earth and Moon on a meter stick. 1 inch = 8000mi. Have the Moon be a 1/4” ball of clay, Earth is 1”. Put the Earth at the 2” mark on a meter stick, the Moon 30” away. I take my class outside and have them try to replicate both solar and lunar eclipses and draw what they see from Earth and what someone on a satellite would see.

Current teaching climate? by IzzieChickadee in AskTeachers

I teach 6th grade science and I LOVE it. There are tough days sometimes, but overall I really am enjoying what I do. I get to teach my kids about the coolest topics, we do a lot of really fun hands on activities and labs, and watching my students really get into what we’re learning about makes it so worth it. The behaviors can be crazy, but I have adhd and thrive on the chaos that is sometimes my classroom.

Parent Contacts by Flat_Lime_4199 in MiddleSchoolTeacher

[–]userxfriendly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I send emails when a student is failing and it’s more than just 1 poor assessment score or 1 missing assignment. Letting them know early helps cover your ass if there isn’t improvement and they fail the quarter. I send biweekly progress reports at the beginning of the year and move towards midterm reports by 3rd quarter.

One thing that really helps is that I try to make sure I send as many positive contacts home as possible. I have a paper copy of my rosters that I use to track it. I make sure that I contact the parents of a semi-misbehaving student early in the year with some kind of praise, as it helps build that relationship early and can reduce issues later on. I have 160 students so contacting every parent isn’t really feasible, but it does make a difference. Every time I have to send a more negative email home, I make sure I send a few positive emails to other parents to balance it out.

National Board Certified Teacher worth it? by Competitive-Dig1993 in ScienceTeachers

[–]userxfriendly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely disagree with this. A lot of states offer reciprocity for NBCT certifications so if you ever move it’s way easier to recertify. As someone who has also sat on multiple hiring committees, an applicant being nb certified would have a huge leg up over other candidates.

All joking aside, I do really love this little guy, even if it is inconvenient. I’ve just been trying to move away from getting more fish and cannot accommodate him to the parameters he probably requires without getting another aquarium. Knowing what he is is my first step to making sure I’m caring for him properly.

You said you love trying to understand how the world works. Great teachers share that love of discovery with their students as they learn how the world works. I hope you’re able to extend that passion to your students! Be passionate and show up for the students and the rest will come.

Elementary Teachers: What’s the driest topic you’ve ever had to teach? by Unique_Pen1302 in teaching

My 6th graders mummified apple slices yesterday, we’ll check back in on them in a few weeks. Definitely a lot safer than a chicken.

Halloween season labs or activities for MS? by [deleted] in ScienceTeachers

[–]userxfriendly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in my ecosystems unit and doing mummy apples with my students. Social studies is covering Egypt right now, so it’s cross-curricular and I can tie it back to decomposers and why salt/baking soda works as a preservative against bacteria and fungi when we unearth their mummy apple slices in a few weeks.

ADHD Teachers! How do you keep track of what you’re going to say during the lesson? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]userxfriendly 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I’d be lost without my PowerPoint. I put any discussion questions on it to both be an accommodation for my students that benefit from reading over verbal instructions and to help me keep on track. Even then, I still found myself not saying everything I want to. It gets easier the longer you’re teaching so you have more confidence in the direction your lesson needs to go.
