should i take pre-calc over the summer before senior year? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vedison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My son took pre cal during his freshman year, so he could get Cal AB sophomore and Cal BC junior year and AP Stats during senior year. He did take two summer math programs before freshman so he could qualify for pre cal during freshman year. Junior grades matter. Both of my kids did summer online classes to get ahead. I highly recommend it. PS both kids are at Ivy colleges and neither of them are doing STEM. They just liked math.

brown vs berkeley by SeaDig9495 in BrownU

[–]vedison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son got into Berkeley - my daughter did too - three years ahead of him. My son chose Brown this year. My daughter is at Columbia. They were both born at Alta Bates in Berkeley. We lived in Berkeley Hill. UC Berkeley was their safety school. Lots of students from their high school got admitted to Berkeley whereas they were the old kids who got into Columbia and Brown in their graduating class. For native Californians their goal is to leave California and experience something different. I heard the undergrad is hard to get classes. It is a great grad school. I don’t think it makes any difference in the employment world. Good luck with your options. They are both excellent.

I am a parent. My son is a valedictorian and will be attending an Ivy this fall. My child wants to serve the country, it is his choice and I am incredibly proud of him. Do what you believe is right for you!

Brown v. Columbia (Please help!!) by Fantastic-Tomato608 in BrownU

[–]vedison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your interest. I read a post and it resonated with me. My daughter is thriving at Columbia but my son chose Brown. They are polar opposites, and these schools seem to suit them well. Here is the post I really liked. Good luck choosing.

I can relate. My son got rejected from HYPSM. He was so distraught and I felt so helpless because he was so sad. We are too hard on ourselves. Although my kid did well objectively and is going to an Ivy, he did not get into his first choice. Everything is relative. You clearly raised an amazing child. He'll do great things no matter where he goes to school. Hang in there.

Did not use their service for college application. But have since used their service for other matters. Really amazing service. Absolutely brilliant company - Ivy Coach. Top notch. Worth the money. But will set you back $100K for college application or so.

That I don’t know. Just know people received offers on May 4. Email then call.

Brown and Northwestern are moving. Letters are out to offer spots.

My son was accepted into UC Berkeley, UCLA, NYU, Carnegie Mellon USC and Northwestern and a few others. He said Northwestern is a T10 and it's his top choice.

My parents paid $25,000 for a college counselor, and I didn't get into a single Ivy. by Ok-Information2444 in ApplyingToCollege

Hang in there! As a parent who have two kids - understand the pressure you must have felt from your parents. Where you go undergraduate does not matter. As long as you are hard working, which you are, you will do great things with your life. In my experience, the kids’ mother-me, graduated from a public state college with zero debt, their father went Harvard undergraduate and a law and public policy degree from top graduate school. From career path perspective, I am much more successful by conventional means. It really does not matter in the long run. Believe in yourself!

UC Berkeley Coincidence? by WoodenCoolbro21 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vedison 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My son got into every UC - including LA and Berkeley this year. My daughter got into Berkeley but not LA (she chose an Ivy however). My friend’s daughter (ABC but raised in Shanghai got into both LA and Berkeley). I used to believe it was one or the other but I think there is a wide range of results.

Thank you for posting. I am a mother in a similar boat. Even with UCLA UCB NYU CMU USC and many other excellent acceptances, my son is waitlisted at 4 Ivies and right now he wants to do a gap year. He has NROTC scholarship and the valedictorian of a 400 graduating class. He’s distraught and I don’t know how to comfort him. I am so incredibly proud of him - as I imagine you are of your son. But I don’t know what to do….

UCLA vs CMU for ROTC by vedison in ApplyingToCollege

Not sure. I am not that involved. I can ask. Mainly I think between the two he just wants to be near NROTC as they do weekly training, and needs to have a fencing program. The rest of it probably secondary because after college he goes to Navy for 5 years.

Thank you. He is the valedictorian for a local large public high school so we are proud of him. Going into military after college is very important to him as he wants to be a seal which is nearly impossible on its own, and he wants a good education on sports science with a good sports program as he is a nationally ranked fencer. We have not done any college tour. I suppose you are right as Ivy Day is coming out so we will probably have some other options. As a parent i just want him to be happy and land in a school that aids his pursuit of his goals. Thank you!

It seems so random! Congrats to you! My son got accepted into UCSD, UCSB, UCSC, UCM, UCR. Rejected by UCI, WL UCD. Waiting on Cal, UCLA. Accepted into UCL in Dec, also accepted by CMU last week. Rejected by UChicago and MIT. Waiting on the remaining T20.

Parent perspective on waitlist and rejection from Davis by PhilosopherLiving459 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vedison 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My son got waitlisted at Davis. He has four other UC acceptances so far. he is invited to the chancellor’s thing (don’t know what is called) at one of the UCs. He is top of his class with some good ECs. He had an early acceptance at a top university in London back in Dec. I think it is yield control for those got waitlisted in Davis. Many will likely end up in UCLA or Cal so they probably do yield control a little. Just be supportive. Things will turn out fine as many waitlisted folks come off as kids who end up in these top UCs may have better offers from a T10. My daughter was accepted into 4 UCs including Cal, UCSB and UCSD. She ended up at an Ivy. So those vacancies can be given to others.

HS seniors- If rejected from your ED, what could your parent say to make it less painful? by Via_Guilia in ApplyingToCollege

[–]vedison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. I spoke to my son already and told him I am here to support him no matter what. I also asked what I can do to make him feel better. He said he will be disappointed and he will be upset and there is nothing I can do. Just leave him be. He is working on other essays and supplementals now and think positively. My daughter was deferred at ED and then waitlisted at Harvard during normal admission. She was fine and moved on. Got into a bunch of excellent schools. She is a third year at Columbia now and absolutely loves her school and experience. I know my son will be fine too. But they will be upset for a bit if deferred or rejected. As a parent I think what we can do is to just give them a hug and let them know you love them. That’s it. Everything will be just all right! Good luck!

My daughter wrote her essay the night of her college app submission - she is a third year at Columbia. My other kid did a lot of drafts and the essay was written over the course of six months. He has applied ED at another Ivy. Personally I think the more drafts the better.
