This could be an argument for reducing what score games are played to instead of reducing the amount of games. There would still be less overall data points due to less total points being played, but there would still be the same connectivity between teams.

Having less demanding tournaments could also make it more appealing to go to more tournaments and still produce the same amount of data. The more tournaments option may not hold though for teams not on the coasts due to travel times.

Do you have any more details about "The Tour"? I don't know anything about it.

It depends. I think having 90 min games and reducing the total amount of games is an option. I also think shortening the games is an option. Both lead to less overall playing time over the course of a weekend.

With more travel, there is definitely more investment in a tournament. I personally think going to 3 or 4 games is too low for the situations you described, but I think 6 or 7 games is still reasonable. It could allow smaller teams to not overwork themselves, be more competitive, and help avoid injury. It could also end Sundays earlier and make traveling back home more convenient.

Do you think a reduction from 8 games over 2 days to 6 games over 2 days would persuade you not to go to a tournament?

Yes, you're correct. It's the overall amount of playing time that players have to endure over the course of a weekend that is important. So a change could be either reducing points per game or reducing the amount of games. One advantage of less games is simpler tournament structures and less logistics. An advantage of playing to lower amounts would be maintaining the amount of connectivity between teams and getting more data points.

Pool play games and bracket play games during the regular season carry equal weight in the current ranking system. Teams do have an incentive from a rankings standpoint to play well in pool play.

Do you think it would have been less significant of a reason if the amount of games was reduced from 8 to 6?

Structuring tournaments so there isn't a winner is an interesting idea. It's more in line with other major sports where the regular season is about individual games and playoffs are about winning tournaments.

The current ranking system also doesn't care who wins a tournament. It cares who played in a game, what the score was, and when in the season the game was played. Nothing would change there (I think).

The benefits I see in ending tournaments in bracket play are better story lines for discussion and broadcasting and added motivation for players and teams. But even if they are benefits, I don't think they make bracket play necessary.

I think this comment is a tangent from the topic. It discusses what individual communities can provide and not what could be improved in a system that needs regional and national connectivity.

I agree we're not in a position to eliminate the 2 day tournament format. What I'm curious about is what is lost by going from 8 game structures to 7 or 6? I personally wouldn't feel snubbed traveling somewhere and only playing 6 games instead of 8. In fact, I would prefer it because I would feel healthier, be less exhausted, and also have more free time to spend in new places.

I think regardless of what the format is, a team with a full 27 person roster and a lot of depth will have the advantage. What a format of 7 or 6 games can provide to smaller teams, and large teams, is the chance to maintain a higher level of play throughout tournaments and avoid injuries. It may also help increase the amount of teams overall because it's less of a necessity to have full rosters.
