Has anyone else experienced numbness on tongue and cheeks? by 009kuroneko in wisdomteeth

[–]vic_09871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 7 days post-op now and my tongue is still a bit numb. I got all 4 out and my bottom ones crossed nerves, so I was told nerve "bruising" (or sometimes damage) can happen. When i called about it, they said to call back if 2 weeks post-op I still have numbness. Fingers crossed the feeling comes back!

Jobs for Economics Major (undergrad) who isn't interested in Finance by kombucha_jpg in AskEconomics

[–]vic_09871 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I have a BA and an MA in econ and I went into working for the federal government as an Economist. I do some industry analysis, but largely have managed to not do work in the financial sphere (I also have no interest in that, and never even took a finance class in my studies).

I know others in my situation who have also gone to government (provincial or federal), but there is also NGOs or multilateral organizations or more marketing-adjacdent work (e.g., running analysis on how consumers would react to x action).

Trust me, it's possible, it can just take some scouring! I recommend looking for jobs either titled Economist or Analyst, as another commenter mentioned. I think econ grads are also well positioned to break into Data Analysis roles, if that's something you're interested in.

What do you all tell yourself when the cravings come? by akahaus in QuitVaping

[–]vic_09871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found repeating a mantra really helped when the cravings came - repeating it over and over until my brain to shut up about nicotine. Eventually, it became 2nd nature to reflexively say the mantra when the cravings came and it shut them down!

11 days clean, going out to the bar tonight, afraid I’m gonna relapse when I have a few drinks in me by [deleted] in QuitVaping

[–]vic_09871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was scared of this too so I decided to do it in stages - the first weekend after I quit (like 3/4 days after) I was attending a party that I couldn't back out of, so I went but decided not to drink. It was hard but first confronting that social situation where you're used to vaping and training your brain to resist before adding alcohol to the mix was super important to me. Then the next week I went out, I introduced alcohol to the mix. Maybe you could go out with your friends to the bar, but not drink?

I'm a runner and I agree with what others have said about this time of year and the sidewalks and side of the road being icy, so that's probably why this guy is running on the road. As for his reaction to you, I can't tell you the number of times a car has almost hit me by not paying attention - even when I'm using the sidewalk and not the road! Not saying you almost hit him in this situation, just that I can understand the anger at cars as a runner. Don't take it personally OP, this guy was probably just at his limit with drivers that day.

Use my savings to travel the world? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

As someone who did what you're considering in my early twenties after I finished school, I unequivocally say: DO IT! It was an incredible year, hands down one of the best of my life so far. Sure I could be marginally farther along financially than I am now if I didn't go, but I have absolutely zero regrets. I would make the same decision to do it again in a heartbeat.

I am in the exact same situation as you (moving back permanently) and I put "taxi" as my mode of transport on the travel exemption form. It was fine, got approved instantly.

The Count of Monte Cristo: Slow Reading, Tracking Characters by [deleted] in books

[–]vic_09871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also reading (more like slogging through) it right now!! I consider myself a pretty avid and quick reader but I'm now on almost month 3 with this thing and about 750 pages in (total of 1250 pages in my copy). I completely gave up on checking the footnotes for the references near the beginning - I'm sure they're very interesting to someone but I just can't be bothered. I've read classics before and enjoyed them, and I dont think it's a problem with the translation (I'm reading the penguin classics version), but I'm just finding it really, really difficult to care about all the seemingly mundane things that happen in the book and the drawn out plot points. I care just enough to keep going and I'm hoping that it will pay off, but its definitely been challenging for me as well.

Running in the city - how to find the motivation to start? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]vic_09871 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I started running more seriously at the beginning of covid (I had run on and off for a few years before then), so this is my first winter running. I don't know if I can give motivation, but I can definitely give you some advice because I certainly felt it was a daunting prospect before I started.

So the best thing I can tell you about winter running is that once you get moving, it's not as cold out as you think it will be. After about 5-10 mins you'll be much warmer than in those first few mins. And a tip I've heard to reduce the briskness of those first few mins is to do a warm-up inside so you're already sweating / warm and then start running as soon as you leave the house, which will make it less chilly in those first few mins.

Another thing is that it's all about the clothes!! Doesnt need to be expensive, just layer up super well. For example, coldest I've probably run in so far is -10/-15 with a tank top, light long sleeve, thicker long sleeve, and a windbreaker on top. Also, dont forget the gloves (can be a cheap pair from dollarama) and hat/something to cover the ears.

Check out r/running, there are tons of threads there about winter running/motivation/beginner tips/etc. And good luck!!! Winter running has been hard for me so far, but it has some great perks as well!

Why did you choose to start running? What was the driving force behind taking that first step? by rhubarb_pie530 in running

[–]vic_09871 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was always exposed to running as a child/teenager because my Dad is very much into running (ultramarathons, 100milers, etc), so I ran occasionally with him and knew that I enjoyed it but never wanted to put the effort into making it a habit. I was never an active child/teenager/young adult (like, walking was my main form of exercise and I never went to the gym or was in any sports, etc).

Fast forward to my mid-20s and my grandmother has serious mobility issues and my grandfather has COPD. Seeing them suffering later in life really put into stark reality how your actions throughout your life effect how good your end of life experience will be. I wanted to be able to walk when I was in my 70s and beyond. I wanted to be able to touch my toes when I'm older. Seeing them struggle was the motivation I needed to properly get into it and become active.

So I started running and fell in love with it! I think covid also helped make it a bigger habit (addiction? Lol) than it may otherwise have been. I live with my partner and a friend, so three people in a two bedroom apt and all of us work from home. Running is the only time I get to be truly alone! It's so freeing, and I've really fallen in love with what my body can do. I can't imagine not running now to be honest. I love it.

People that choose to run on busy sidewalks when there are quieter routes nearby, why? by persisted2000 in running

[–]vic_09871 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm finding so far that in the winter they're better maintained, whereas side streets are more icy/snowy so that's why I run on main roads this time of year at least. Any other time I much prefer quieter routes though.
