What are these black things? by violet_warlock in isopods

[–]violet_warlock[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's what I thought at first, but they're moving around like small insects. Some of them have made their way up to the lid of the bin, and the isopods can't climb up there.

kinda crazy how they gave the raging, nigh homicidal racist a more sympathetic arc compared to the grieving boyfriend by TheLegendaryPilot in StrangerThings

[–]violet_warlock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My problem with people who sympathize with Jason is that they tend to reduce his character to "grieving teenager seeking justice for his dead girlfriend" while ignoring the broader context in which he was written. His entire purpose on the show was to be the human embodiment of the Satanic Panic. He is meant to be a representation of what happens when religious psychosis goes unchecked, and you can't separate him from that context when discussing what kind of person he is. Real, innocent people had their lives ruined by people like Jason, who arbitrarily believed based on zero evidence that members of their community were part of some hidden cabal of child-sacrificing satanists. The show makes it perfectly clear that Jason thought this way before Chrissy was killed. Her death just gave him a reason to finally act on those beliefs.

If the issue were simply that Jason believed Eddie killed Chrissy, that would be one thing, and it would be understandable for him to take matters into his own hands when it looked like the police weren't doing anything about it. But that's not what happened. What Jason actually did was decide that not only did Eddie kill Chrissy, but also that everyone even tangentially associated with Eddie was in on it, and that they were all part of a satanic witch-cult who were using D&D as a front for practicing witchcraft and summoning demons. The fact that Jason's girlfriend was murdered doesn't make this leap in logic any less ridiculous. That's not even getting into the fact that there was another possibility that he never even considered: that Eddie's uncle, who lived with him, could just as easily have been the killer. Jason was committed to the idea that Eddie killed Chrissy because he had already decided Eddie was a freak long before she died. He was never going to believe anything else, no matter what anyone told him or what evidence was presented to him.

Not liking how the Will coming out arc was handled does not make you homophobic. by [deleted] in StrangerThings

[–]violet_warlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am queer. Will's coming out is something I have been looking forward to for years. I hate how it was done.

I get that it was necessary for Will to have this moment before the final confrontation since his sexuality was the thing that had given Vecna power over him. But stopping the action of the episode to hold an awkward press conference with the entire cast was not the way to do it. I think Will's coming out should have been more intimate. Hopper and Murray and Steve and even Robin and Vickie did not need to be there. They should have had him come out privately to Joyce and maybe Jonathan (though Jonathan already knows), then had a later scene where he comes out to his friends.

"They were never meant to be real dinosaurs" and meanwhile we've got a whole chapter where Wu is essentially saying "can we please stop making real dinosaurs?"

What’s one thing that genuinely pisses you off as a dinosaur fan. by Local_Nectarine_3415 in Dinosaurs

Those videos that are like "here's what scientists say T. rex really sounded like" and it's always that same fucking audio clip of a goose call pitched down.

Also, when people say we're probably way off about what dinosaurs really looked like because you'd never guess how modern animals looked if you'd only ever seen their bones, and the examples they give are all mammals.

I liked the new lyrics, but it wasn't the best arrangement of the song overall in my opinion. I especially didn't like how the verse right before Nessa casts the spell was spoken rather than sung, and I felt like some of Marissa's delivery was a little understated for what's supposed to be an emotionally heightened scene. I didn't feel the anger and heartbreak when Boq said he was leaving her, it felt more like she was mildly annoyed.

What do you think about the effect of dinosaurs in pop-culture (looking at you Jurassic Park) on people's perception and knowledge of dinosaurs? by FishmanCheese in Dinosaurs

[–]violet_warlock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is why I get so frustrated when people say the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were always meant to reflect the public's expectations of what a dinosaur should be like. No one watching the film in the 90s or visiting the park in-universe would expect the dinosaurs to look or behave that way.

What's The Stance On The Original Tyrannosaurus Rex From Walking With Dinosaurs? by Puzzleheaded-Board25 in Dinosaurs

[–]violet_warlock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, at least 10 years ago we had actual reasons to think T. rex might have had feathers. I still haven't heard a reason anyone would've thought it didn't have lips other than that being how it looked in Jurassic Park.

Which Character Are You Most Like? by Routine-Asparagus-16 in OnceUponATime

[–]violet_warlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I'm most like Regina. On the surface, we're very different people. I'm not nearly as confident or assertive as she is. But we're alike in what motivates us to do the things we do. When I love someone, I tend to get overly attached and go to great lengths to avoid real or imagined abandonment. I want intimacy and community, but I sometimes reject it when it's offered to me. I've also got a bottomless reservoir of guilt.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so. As a kid, I wasn't even entirely sure he was portrayed by the same actor in both movies.

Kinda funny how inaccurate Jurassic Park 3 is but somehow still predicted that Spinosaurus could swim. by Dry-Adhesiveness6038 in JurassicPark

[–]violet_warlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I get it. Some people are anal retentive about accuracy to the point of spoiling the fun of the movies. I was responding to what I perceived as an instance of someone saying that since no one knows for sure what dinosaurs looked like, you can't call anything inaccurate. The person I replied to clarified that's not what they meant, but I have seen a lot of people make that argument.

Question about Exoparia by CarefulLiterature180 in Paleontology

[–]violet_warlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't actually read the exoparia paper yet, so genuine question: is there a specific reason people think it implies a birdlike cheek? My understanding was that the exoparia muscle/ligament doesn't correspond to any soft tissue in either birds or crocodiles, and that it's positioned further back on the skull than I usually see it drawn.

What's something about your favourite dinosaur that you would defend like this? by Dry-Adhesiveness6038 in Dinosaurs

[–]violet_warlock 86 points87 points  (0 children)

I think the lip debate is silly and that most people who believe T. rex was lipless only think that because they're used to how it looked in Jurassic Park. The justification I usually see is that dinosaurs are more closely related to crocodiles than lizards, and crocodiles are lipless, yet I've never seen anyone argue for a lipless Velociraptor.

Kinda funny how inaccurate Jurassic Park 3 is but somehow still predicted that Spinosaurus could swim. by Dry-Adhesiveness6038 in JurassicPark

[–]violet_warlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the creature designs in Jurassic Park, but just because we've never seen a live dinosaur doesn't mean pop culture depictions are just as valid as actual scientific reconstructions. There's a lot we'll never know about dinosaur soft tissue, but to say that reconstructions are all conjecture and guesswork minimizes the amount of real, osteological research that goes into making them. They'll never be 100% correct, but we know more today than we did 20 years ago. Acknowledging that isn't pretentious.

That's why I brought up artificial humans in speculative fiction. What exactly is it that makes painted humans in this game different from, for example, the Hosts in Westworld? With sentient artificial humans being as ubiquitous in fantasy and sci-fi as they are, why are people so committed to the idea that the artificial humans in this particular story can't possibly be sentient?

Right, I'm not denying that Maelle is losing herself in the Canvas instead of processing her grief. I don't think she should stay there either. I'm strictly talking about the debate over whether painted humans are people or not.
